Coronavirus: Vaccine needed to fully halt spread of Covid-19, says WHO

Coronavirus: The total number of coronavirus cases in India has crossed 9,000 while the death toll has crossed 300. According to the latest health ministry update, 30 deaths have been reported in the last 24 hours in India. Telangana government has decided to extend the ongoing lockdown till April 30 while the Centre is yet to announce its final decision on the extension. The nationwide lockdown that PM Modi announced on March 24 will be ending on April 14. Meanwhile, France and Italy have reported a dip in the number of new cases and deaths while the United States have reported over 1500 deaths in 24 hours. UK PM Boris Johnson has been discharged from hospital after recovering from Covid-19 while the country recorded 10,000 deaths.

Transmission of coronavirus from mother to baby before birth, during delivery possible: ICMR

The Indian Council of Medical Research on Monday said the emerging evidence suggests that transmission of coronavirus from mother to baby before birth or during delivery is possible although the proportion of pregnancies affected and the significance to the neonate is yet to be determined.

The apex health research body also said there are no recorded cases of breast milk being tested positive for COVID-19 at present, and no data suggesting an increased risk of miscarriage or early pregnancy loss in relation to the disease.

"...Emerging evidence now suggests that vertical transmission (from mother to baby antenatally or intrapartum) is probable, although the proportion of pregnancies affected and the significance to the neonate has yet to be determined," it said.
