Sexual abuse survivors call for list of Louisville priests accused of assault to be released now
WEBVTT STORY. CAR:AY -- CARAY: A GROUP OF SEXUAL ASSAULT SURVIVORS STOOD OUTSIDE THE ARCHDIOCESE WITH ONE REQUEST, RELEASE THE NAMES. >> TELL ME WHY HE CAN’T RELEASE A PARTIAL LIST TODAY? CARAY: FOUR SURVIVORS WHO BELONG TO THE SURVIVORS NETWORK OF THOSE ABUSED BY PRIESTS, WANT ARCHBISHOP JOSEPH KURTZ TO RELEASE THE LIST OF PRIESTS WHO HAVE BEEN ACCUSED OF SEXUAL ASSAULT. THEY WANT HIM TO GO A STEP FURTHER, BY ADDING THE NAMES OF THOSE WHO DIDN’T ALWAYS WORK IN LOUISVILLE. >> THESE ARE FIVE WERE ORDAINED ELSEWHERE, MOSTLY WORKED ELSEWHERE, MOSTLY WERE ACCUSED OF ABUSING ELSEWHERE, BUT THEY ALL WERE IN LOUISVILLE. CARAY: WE SAT DOWN WITH ARCHBISHOP KURTZ IN NOVEMBER. IN AN EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW, WE ASKED HIM ABOUT TRANSPARENCY FROM THE ARCHDIOCESE IN RELEASING THOSE NAMES. >> WE’RE TAKING VERY SPECIFIC STEPS RIGHT NOW. CARAY: HE TOLD US THEY WOULD RELEASE A FULL LIST OF PRIESTS IN DECEMBER. BUT ACCORDING TO A RECENT LEADERSHIP BRIEFING, THE EXPECTED PUBLICATION DATE IS NOW LATE JANUARY. WE REACHED OUT TO THEM FOR COMMENT REGARDING SNAP’S DEMANDS. IN A STATEMENT THEY SAID, WE AGREE WITH THE IMPORTANCE OF TRANSPARENCY AND ARE WORKING ON A LIST OF CREDIBLY ACCUSED CLERGY, WHICH WE HOPE TO RELEASE SOON. BUT CLOHESSY SAYS A LIST ISN’T ENOUGH, ESPECIALLY SINCE HE BELIEVES MANY OF THE PRIESTS WILL NEVER FACE CRIMINAL PROSECUTION. >> THE LIST SHOULD BE COMPLETE. IT SHOULD HAVE PHOTOS AND WHEREABOUTS AND

A group of sexual abuse survivors with the group SNAP (Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests) stood outside the Archdiocese of Louisville with one message, release their names."It should have happened a long time ago. It should happen tomorrow. There's no reason why you can't release a partial list today," said David Clohessy, volunteer director of SNAP. Four survivors are calling for Archbishop Joseph Kurtz to release the list of priests who have been accused of sexual assault in Louisville. They want him to go a step further, by adding the names of those who didn't always work in Louisville. "These are five priests who mostly were ordained elsewhere, mostly worked elsewhere, mostly accused of abusing elsewhere but they all were in Louisville," said Clohessy. We sat down with Archbishop Kurtz in November. He told us they would release a full list of priests in December, but according to a recent leadership briefing, the expected publication date is now late January. In a statement from the Archdiocese regarding SNAP's demands they said:"We agree with the importance of transparency and are working on a list of credibly accused clergy, which we hope to release soon. As the report research continues, Archbishop Kurtz has met with victims and will continue to do so. We urge anyone who has been sexually abused by a representative of the Church to contact the police and our Victim Assistance Coordinator at victimassistance@archlou.org" Clohessy says a list isn't enough, especially since he believes many of the priests will never face criminal prosecution."The list should be complete. It should have photos and whereabouts and work histories of these child molesting clerics, because that's the way you protect kids," said Warren Tucker, a sexual abuse survivor.
