GREENVILLE, Pa. – The Thiel College women's tennis team opened the season Saturday with an 8-1 Presidents' Athletic Conference (PAC) win over the Geneva Golden Tornadoes.
It was Thiel's first PAC win over Geneva and its first season-opening win since 2014.
The Tomcats swept the doubles matches on Saturday.
Natalie Zgurich (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) and
Payton Blankenbeckley (Portsmouth, Ohio/Minford) defeated Kaylee McCall and Mady Paquet, 8-3.
Sarah Haritos (Wilmington, Del./Concord) and
Jordan Zee (Conneaut, Ohio/Edgewood) teamed for an 8-2 win over Laura Lin Comollo and Caleigh Pumphrey while
Madeline Depalma (Ravenna, Ohio/Ravenna) and
Reagan Hayne (Greenville, Pa./Greenville) topped Delaney Winterhalter and Ella Miller, 8-7 (7-5).
In singles matches, Zgurich won 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 over McCall. At second singles, Haritos defeated Paquet, 6-4, 6-2. Blankenbeckley beat Comollo 6-3, 6-3 at No. 3 while Zee won 6-1, 6-2 over Pumphrey at No. 4. Hayne also won at sixth singles, 6-3, 6-1, over Cassy Kehs.
The Tomcats will face the Franciscan Barons on the road Thursday. The PAC match is set to begin at 5:30 p.m.
