Mellie

I was not a gambler. No way. I’ve built an existence free of risk and adventure. From my career to a small life with my closest family. I was not going to do anything to jeopardize my heart. But when my neighbor and number one menace to my safe plans showed up in Vegas, I did what every adventurous (not!) woman would do. I got drunk and married the man.

Adam

What happens in Vegas is supposed to stay in Vegas. Then, I went and married Mellie Dupree. That woman I’ve been chasing for two years is now my wife. She claims she doesn’t remember our wedding, but I was there, and I know she’s not telling the truth. Then again, neither am I.

STORY

So I am not even going to lie. I thought I would have gotten Colt’s story next but wooo sahhhh… I can wait; I thought he was so yummy in Takeover what little we saw of him.

This was a very laid back read that follows the author’s blueprint of romance, a bit of laughs, family and friends. I did not know how and if Takedown would be connected to Takeover book 1, but I love the connection and how it unfolds. I would definitely say read Takeover first. As for Takedown, I felt it was a story that started out in reverse. A night in Vegas, marriage and then the reality of what have I done took over. However, we, the readers, aren’t aware of what happened in Vegas, and we are following Adam and Millie getting to know each other as the story progresses. As apart of the build up, we do eventually get to see what really happen.

I love Adam and Millie in different ways, but Adam, he will melt your heart along with those panties. Adam’s crush and possessiveness over Millie is what excited me in this story. His possessiveness was not dark or crazy, but he did bring out the caveman to play throughout the story. Honestly, I'm surprised it took him two years of waiting on Millie by the way he was so enamored but her. Millie had her insecurities, but it wasn’t overbearing as she was still likable and strong will. OMG budgeting is ok as we all try to do this but her budgeting drove me crazy! Lol

SEXUAL CHEMISTRY:
I liked the sex scenes, but my greedy inner slut wanted a little more scenes at times with some scenes a little longer. I say this because I love them together. Nothing too outrageous, but I enjoyed their first sex scene together.

SECONDARY CHARACTERS:
I can’t speak on everyone who is in this book as to prevent spoilers. However, loved Adam’s family. His uncle has me smiling. Millie’s family dynamics were interesting, but walked away liking most.

OVERALL:
If you are a fan of the author, you already have some ideas of what to expect with style, pace and storyline. I enjoyed the characters and for me with this author’s work, as the story unfolds, it gets better.

✰✰TRIGGERS: Slight mention of sexual harassment.

****I don’t equate these stories to real life. It’s about personal taste and what you would or want to tolerate with the books you read. I know we all have different opinions and preferences with what we read. I based my book reviews on my preferences and what I like, and while these preferences may not be the same for others, I hope this review was still helpful.

dnf @ 30% i love adam so much but i feel like mel didn’t deserve him. she was so immature and just fucking mean to her. it was annoying that she kept implying that he was broke because he was a vice principal and she had a better job but kept hounding him on how he could afford everything. it was her idea to get married but then pretended like he forced her it didn’t make any sense to me. she acts like a child and i couldn’t sit through that shit any longer

Takedown is a huge letdown for me. I am a fan of Miss Sola. I have high expectation for her books. Sadly not for Takedown.

The drama, back and forth and Mel's character drive me mad with frustration. The plot is repeating and dry. No major twist except how immature Mell is.

Not enjoying this book.

Tropes;
Neighbours to Lovers
Guy Falls First
Forced Proximity
Accidental Marriage

I have very mixed feelings about this book. Half of me liked it and the other half of me heavily disliked it lmao.

The hero in this book takes the ‘guy falls first’ trope to a whole new level. This dude was almost obsessed (like stalker obsessed) with the heroine and honestly, if a guy was acting like the hero in this book was to me in real life, I’d consider getting a restraining order.

He has been pining (obsessing) over her for two years. They end up in Vegas for a mutual friends wedding where the hero and heroine end up having a last minute vegas wedding themselves.

From this point forward, the hero was 100% committed to the marriage and calls the heroine wife all the time. The word wife is mentioned 188 times in this book😐.Every time he called her wife I wanted to gouge my eyes out.

The heroine was also pretty annoying. She seemed to regret marrying the hero as soon as she woke up the next day and then lied to everyone saying that he got her drunk and forced her into it, when really this did not happen at all. This didn’t really sit right with me.

What I really did like about this book were the tender and sweet moments between the two characters. They had some really cute scenes when they were serious and getting to know each other. Its only because of these scenes that I wanted to keep reading.

I was originally going to rate this 3 stars but given that I have gone on a little bit of a rant, I’ve changed my mind lmao.

Hmm, I dunno. I think I have hit my two chances threshold.

My thing is to give a new to me author two chances if the first time I try them I either didn't like it or was iffy. In the case of this author, the first book I tried is the first book in this series. I liked parts and really disliked parts. So here I am trying again.

And yeah, this book has the same strengths and weaknesses of the first book.

I'll start with what didn't work:

The hero and heroine have insta love. In this case the hero is completely sprung on the hero before the first page. He tells us (and act like it) that he was in love with her from the moment he saw her. I like to watch my characters fall in love. That is part of what attracts me to romance novels. So there is a fair amount of telling instead of showing. We are presented with a fait accompli.

And then there is the heroine, Mellie, being emotionally immature in the very beginning of the book and having us beg the question as to why the hero, Adam, is so in love with her?

In this book we start out with Mellie waking up in Vegas and realizing that she married Adam the night before. Before he can wake up, she sneaks out of the room, makes if back t her room, packs and is on a plane back home before he even wakes up.

Initially for her POV we assume it was some sort of drunken hazething. But we learn that is not the case. So it makes her actions at the very beginning even more puzzling. When Adam arrives back home to announce to all their friends and family that they are married, she blames him completely, leads us to believe she has no memory of what happened and even floats the idea that might have drugged her. She keeps denying it, says he's a liar even punches, kicks and jumps on him and tries to choke him when he insists he is telling the truth.

Later we are supposed to understand that her refusal to give into her feelings for Adam is because of her deeply dysfunctional relationship with her mother -- basically her mother mind fucked her all her life. This is actually great character motivation and a good reason why Mellie has a hard time committing. And I get wanting to create a sort of tension and antagonism between the two MCs. But it is an odd narrative decision to make the heroine unlikable and quite frankly a flat out liar to accomplish that.

There is a reason first impressions are important. I am ok with a good redemptive arc, but it is not great if the character is made to look borderline unhinged to get there. There was no reason for Mellie to be such a raving lunatic. She could have simply shown to have regrets for a bad decision made in the heat of the moment. But she was instead in 100% denial and refused for a good portion of the first 1/4 of the book to take any personal responsibility. I have a personal distaste for almost everything that was given to me about that character in the beginning and frankly I never completely lost some of that distaste.

Adam is rather flat in that he seemed to have one setting. He was obsessed and in love with Mellie no matter what. At one point he finally breaks and tells her that her behavior is idiotic and that he could give up on her and find a woman who doesn't treat him the way she does. It is a bad sign that I wanted him to do just that.

But like the previous book there are some areas where the read is really enjoyable and the writing is very fun.

What worked:

The supporting characters. If this book had to rely on the two MCs, I'd've given up on it. But the supporting characters including the extended family and Mellie's GFs were all great. Any scene that included the family, and there were a lot, immediately had a great energy.

Adam's subplot with his family was good.

Mellie's relationship with her mother was interesting and I wish the book had worked with that with some nuance and not just confrontation after confrontation. There was a kernel of a some really great character motivation work there as I mentioned above. I just don't think it was explored as well as it could have been.

So yeah, even though there were parts of this book that I really liked, I don't like the feeling that I have to soldier on to get past a real dislike of the heroine. Especially since my enjoyment of the romance is primarily bound up in how much I like the heroine.

They say what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas right?

Mellie woke up one morning snuggled beside someone, she noticed a ring in her finger and a marriage certificate on the bedside table! The most shocking of it all is that the man she’s clinging to is her neighbor, Adam! Shocked and in denial, what’s a girl like her do? She bolted and went home!

Adam woke up without his new wife beside him, he was mad because his new wife was gone! Unknowingly to Mellie, her new husband won’t let her runaway. He chased the woman for two years and he would not let her go.

This is my first book for this author and I must say that I really enjoy the writing style. Mellie and Adam are hot! Their first intimate moment? I have to read twice!
The push and pull, the banters, sexy times are so good, I can’t help but swoon!

Mellie’s character is relatable. She’s head strong, but having some family issues more specifically her mother, I cannot help but be sad and sorry for her but despite that she has her husband Adam to make everything right. Oh my Adam… he’s at the top for the best husband material category. He’s alpha, possessive but very caring and thoughtful, he works for what he wants and that is to chase and win the heart of the woman he loves for two years and never gives up.

Marriage, Family and how to deal with it the are central aspect of this book. And also the thing I love about the story are the other characters that makes up the book enjoyable and heartwarming. Alex and Ananda are the bff’s you want to have for the rest of your life! The siblings of Adam are interesting. I would love to know more about Ethan’s book!

I’m happy that I got to read this book and I would have to read more from Evelyn Sola. Thanks @socialbutterflypr the ARC Provided for an honest review.

4 star review Takedown by Evelyn Sola

It’s a well known fact that what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas, or does it? Adam Flynn fell for his neighbour Mellie Dupree the moment he set eyes on her but she just finds him aggravating. However after a night out in Vegas Adam and Mellie find themselves married and Mellie’s first thought is to run.

What she didn’t count on his Adam’s determination to keep their marriage alive. I really enjoyed the journey they travelled as they finally got to know one another. I adored Adam, he was totally swoon worthy, an alpha with a heart of gold. Millie has some issues but I really liked her and found her strong and independent.

I enjoyed the push and pull of their relationship, the banter was witty and there was enough steam heating up the pages to keep you hooked. The secondary characters, particularly Adam’s Uncle Finn were just as entertaining. Mellie’s family on the other hand, I was not as fond of.

Takedown is fast paced, well written and is a story of learning to love yourself and trusting that the one you fully open your heart to, will catch you.

I’m really sorry to say I didn’t enjoy this one. There are several reasons. After a fun start, the book quickly changed and the main character Mellie, became pretty unlikeable - I was really shocked by her behaviour at times - it was like she had a dual personality. Her brother Jason was also a bit of a jerk to be honest. Adam was okay; he was very Alpha and veered into Alphahole territory at times though - he could be quite aggressive. Adam’s mum was great and Jason’s wife was too, but I didn’t like Mellie’s other friends. I didn’t care for the language they used when addressing each other and the language Mellie used about herself when in intimate moments with Adam. I don’t have a problem with swearing, but derogatory terminology I don’t like. Adam’s uncle was basically a caricature/stereotype. I’ve read one of the author’s books before and in that one there was a mum from hell, as there is with this one. The main problem for me was there were too many repeats of the same argument being dredged up over and over so I felt the book was very overlong - an 8 hour read for what could have been half that. I won’t spoil the story, but there are some other characters that come into it later on who were great, more the kind of characters I like to read about. I also didn’t think the title was relevant to the story, nor was the cover image. I received an ARC copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

Dnf. I couldn’t get past the fml’s childish behavior. Like I have never seen a grown woman act the way she does and I’m not sure why the author took the character in that direction. Mellie kept making decisions and blaming everyone else for them or acting like child about it. I’ve never hated a character more tbh.

A good time

So I’ve been reading the series out of order or I should say in the reverse order and I’m definitely liking it.

I still kind of wish the mother aspect had more of it, karmic ending to it, but still having a strained relationship, does ease my tension little bit.

It’s also is now making me really want to read Ethan’s story. Because at first I didn’t find it interesting but now that I have read everyone else’s story there storyline seems more appealing.

But when it comes to Vinces story, I’m really glad that he was very persistent and what he wanted, and even though she had face value kept giving him the runaround. I am glad that she finally Lilly said what really happened in Vegas and let her guard down to be loved.

Great story! Great writing!

The story starts off with the cliché got-drunk-and-married-in-Vegas plot but secrets are revealed, characters evolve becoming complex, and a tender romance is created that leaves you wanting more.

In the beginning, Melanie was so aggravating and unrelatable I would have given this story a 3 or 4, especially after her freak out when confronted by her new husband.

From the jump, Adam was charming, loyal, reliable, and 100% alpha. He’s worth 10 stars.

As someone said in a previous review the beginning is hard to take. I mean extremely hard. It’s is very hard to believe that this emotionally immature woman was a vice principal. I did not like Mellie, and Adam deserves better.

The beginning was good and had that captivating tension but after they got together it got kinda boring like they should have gotten together close to the ending and had a lot of filler chapters, the main character made me want to put a bullet in my skull such a fucking idiot, the girl, I forgot her name pero yea.

I saw a small glimpse of this story on TikTok so of course I ran to kindle. I did try the first one in the series and i had to dnf only for two reasons I don’t like single parent tropes and the main character seemed to childish when she broke down because her mom didn’t show up for her birthday. And going into this one I saw a review that the mcs were super childish but I decided to try it anyways and it worked for me. Yes they technically did act childish with each other but it felt more fun and upbeat because of it. I didn’t mind it. Like they both were young adults that didn’t have much responsibilities so it worked for me. Unlike Tara who was dealing with a single dad. Anyways I Mellie grew on me the more I read she was fun and witty and didn’t take Adams shit. Adam was super possessive a quality I love in fictional men. But they both had Plenty jealousy scenes. Honestly I got half way and skimmed for the scenes I would like then jumped to end because it got kinda slow/boring for me. Smut scenes were great though

Yes! She did it again! Evelyn made me fall in love with this amazing group of family and friends in Boston.... sigh.

This is a fantastic enemies to loves story full of surprises, twists, turns, relationships and most of all love. Mellie is so relatable. I can see her relating to a lot of readers. Strong, Independent, yet a little scared and unsure. She worries, she's loyal, and loves those important to her without question. She navigates her way through her new crazy life like a pro! You'll love her! Trust me!

Adam may be perfect... but he's my new crush. Back off.

Mellie and Adam are really a great pair, they love fiercely, and overcome everything thrown at them in their crazy world. They had their work cut of for them from day one, but you just know they have the love to prevail!

I loved this one, and I cant wait for more!

The pacing of this book was way too slow. I felt like nothing really happens in this book and it was 40% too long. Honestly, it would probably have been better as a novella. I also thought Mellie was really immature and childish which made her an unlikeable main character.

Vegas seems to be the headquarters of bad mistakes, and things are no different in this book. Takedown is an accidental marriage romance that introduces readers to characters Mellie and Adam. After attending a friend’s wedding, Mellie and Adam decide to have some nuptials of their own. At the start of the book, Mellie sees the rings on her fingers and immediately flees, as if running will make her accidental marriage dissipate. "'It can't be real,' I whisper. I pull the ring off my finger and examine it, unsure of what to look for. A memory from last night hits. Drinks at a bar. Grabbing him and pulling him out of that bar and away from a tall, skinny bitch. There was a dare, but I chase the memory away. He would do this. He would put a wedding ring on my finger as joke. I put both rings on the nightstand, but there's an official looking form already there." There's just one teeny tiny problem, well a big problem actually. Her husband isn't going to let her run from him that easily.

Melanie Dupree is deemed the screw up of her family. If there's anything that can go wrong in a situation, Mellie is going to be involved. "Classic Melanie Elyse Dupree. One fuck up after another. So much for starting a new life when I left New Jersey and moved in with my brother. Oh, well. I went two years without nearly ruining my life. I think that's a record for me." But as the story unfolds, we learn more about Mellie and see that she isn't as bad as everyone makes her out to be. Her marriage to Adam has been deemed accidental. But the people closest to her are left wondering how much of an accident could it really be. "'She's right. I'm not. I'm here or you can always call me or stop by my house, but Mellie,' she reaches for my hand again, her tone now turning serious, 'are you sure you were drunk? They wouldn't have married you if you were too drunk to know what was going on.'" When her mother, Diane, shows up in town Mellie dives fully into her marriage to avoid having to deal with her. Forcing her to deal with some of her untold truths.

Adam Flynn has been smitten with Mellie from the moment he's heard her voice. Not only has he loved her, he chases away any man that appears to have an interest in her. Mellie may not be taking their accidental marriage seriously, but Adam is and he's unwilling to compromise on their marriage being labeled as a farce. "It was impulsive, but I take marriage seriously. Despite being raised by a single mother, I've always respected the sanctity of marriage." Mellie's resistance to their relationship and her outright obnoxiousness makes it extremely hard for Adam to be the doting husband he wants to be. "I'm really fucking tired of being your punching bag. Not only that, I'm sick of your idiot brother too. If you're so unhappy, the exit is right there. You're the one who asked me if you could stay here. I'm not holding you hostage. And if you want out of this marriage, fine. I don't have to beg a woman to stay married to me. I get plenty of offers. You all people should know that."

Accidental marriage is the trope of this book, but it's also an interracial read (BWWM). Mellie and Adam were both extremely obnoxious to me in the beginning of this book, but they did grow on me. There's some family trauma in this book, as far as both main characters are concerned, and that makes this book that much more interesting to read. There's also a splash of comedy when Adam's uncle Finn makes an appearance. "'What happened to your date?' Molly yells. 'My mate? Not gonna happen. She smells like cat piss. Got the hell out of there real quick. What do the kids say? I had to G-T-F-O. What's going on here?'" Overall, this was an enjoyable, light and romantic read. Per the acknowledgements, Melanie originally appears in the book Crave, which is an instant attraction romance penned by Evelyn Sola as well. This story was still enjoyable without reading the back story, but I now that I'm familiar with Mellie and Jason's dynamics, I would love to go back and read about their beginnings. This was my first read by this author, but most definitely won't be my last.

Amazon / Amazon Worldwide

Waking up in Vegas next to a warm body is not Mellie's everyday routine. When she discovers just who that warm body is, and that they had gotten married the night before? Let's just say running away is an understatement of what she does after. What she should have realized is that there is no way Adam was going to let his new wife get away from him that easily. He had been chasing her for years, and now that he had her, yeah she wasn't getting away.

Mellie lead Adam on quite a chase. She was always considered the screwup in her family, and it had left scars on her insides because of it - so those walls Adam had to scale were strong and high. Thank God he was up for the task of claiming her heart. I really liked Adam, his newfound family, and Mellie. Her mom and even brother not so much, but the rest of them were entertaining.

This was super cute! But even after reading 5 of her books still don’t understand Sola book titles they just don’t make sense to me lol.

I liked Mellie a lot more in second half than first. I enjoyed the character development she had. she was kinda rude and childish in the beginning but glad I stuck it out.

Some quotes or instances did give me the ick tho, like Adam saying “girly stuff” and punching a wall?? Why did we need that?

Also don’t really like Jason. I don’t hate him but he repetitively did not listen to anyone and make choices and assumption based of his opinion, which was kinda annoying sometimes. But I like Alex! She is the best!

Although probably my least favourite of the three books out, it’s was still enjoyable. Excited for the fourth book.

It was a wonderful read

Evelyn Sola did an amazing job with this book. It was well written and the chemistry between Adam and Mellie was on point. Takedown is technically a book two for Takeover. I was happy to read about Tara, Ethan and Vincent again in this book.
I’m also glad that Adam worked things out with his siblings and they’re now one happy family.
Despite the trials and self doubt Mellie faced, I’m glad she got her HEA with Adam, they are truly meant for each other

I love Adam Flynn.. and he has been promoted to my top 5 book boyfriends!

This story is about Melanie & Adam & their journey to HEA. I will say in the beginning Melanie/Mellie had her moments where she made me so mad I had to put the book down and come back. Our story begins with Melanie waking up the night after her Vegas wedding to Adam and running for the hills. Adam however is not having that and is ready to chase his wife down.

Adam really made the book for me, as he was patient with Mellie when he needed to be but when she had finally gone too far with her attitude and rudeness, Adam called her out on it. When you find out the reason behind Mellie’s sporadic, rude behavior it’s heartbreaking.

Evelyn was able to pull so many emotions out of me with this couple, I cried, laughed, and even got angry with them. This book is 10/10 recommended.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

I’m kinda sad because didn’t turned out the way I pictured it in my head. So I'm giving it a weak 4*.

Don't get me wrong this was still a great read but there was something off putting with Mellie for me. I really didn't like how she handled herself at the beginning of the story.
I did get to understand why she is the way she is when the story continued and I felt for her I really did but the beginning ruined her image in my eyes. What repaired said image, was when his truths came out in the open, after the initial shock, she stood by him and wouldn't let anything or anyone stand in their way.
Now let's talk about Adam a bit; he was intense, funny, hot and swoony all wrapped up in a big package. He wanted her for so long and now that she was finally his, he wasn't going to let anything take her away. The bright side of the story was his lost family (Tara and Ethan from book1 and their sister Elizabeth) and his mom. That woman was a saint and I love her for taking Mellie under her wings.

Overall this was an enjoyable story and I would recommend it but it took me a few chapters to finally relax enough and connect to the characters to start really enjoying it.

Hmm somewhere closer to 4 than 3. I liked the story, the family dynamics and the couple. But I had issues with Adam’s Neanderthal-Iness. Yes, he’s loyal, caring and supportive but he’s violent toward those he perceived as harming his wife or mother, and some of the dialogue about him “owning” Mel weirded me out. Granted the possessiveness is mutual so it’s not like he’s dominating her and she’s submissive. Sola’s heroes tend to be in the same mold- mouthy, caring, loyal and alphaish bordering on alpha hole. The book works if the woman is mouthy and tough enough too, as was the case in Takeover, Crash, and Unwrapped. Mellie is cool, but she’s a bit too quiet, which makes her less of an even match for my taste.

The book gets better once Ethan and Tara from a “takeover” are part of the story.

Bonus points for an epilogue featuring my faves, Ethan and Tara.

Great story

I really enjoyed this story. It is heartwarming and seriously entertaining. Adam is yummy, caring and goes after what he wants, even if it means going to Vegas for a friend's wedding and waking up married to the woman he has been after for two years. Adam will melt your heart along with your panties. He is possessiveness and determination is rooted at his core.
Melanie had a lot of insecurities, but it was not overbearing and stemmed from her mother, who got on my last nerves.

There is humour, family drama and great sex scenes. Yes, someone has an inner slut.😁

Evelyn, did not disappoint. The story's pace, the storyline and how things unfolded between the characters (not just Mellie and Adam) are excellent.
