Several Scottish courts will close tomorrow so staff can spend the day learning how to sketch and knit.

The Scottish Courts and Tribunals Service confirmed that staff were being sent en masse to undertake training courses. However, a spokesman said that it had no idea how much the event would cost the taxpayer until after it was completed.

Murdo Fraser, the Scottish Conservative MSP, said that the move would be viewed by many people as a waste of taxpayers’ money. He added: “I recognise the need for staff training but is closing the court really necessary when the staff are under so much time pressure just now?”

In a scheme which will be repeated across the country, courts in Tayside, Central and Fife will close
