Thompson Valley ran out of experienced arms and light as Fossil Ridge pushed across four runs to win in the eighth inning, falling to 0-2 in the early going of the season.

The Eagles used a five-run third to open a lead, then carried a one-run advantage into the seventh and was one pitch away from a win with the SaberCats tied the game and forced an extra inning. Jarrett Riehl had two hits and drove in three runs, producing the host’s only extra-base hit with a triple.

“It was frustrating, and it was a slugfest,” TVHS coach Jay Denning said. “I was happy with our offense. The top half of the order produced, and we got some help bottom half getting on base. The thing I really liked was our aggressiveness on base paths. We forced the issue, and when we got opportunities with ball in play, we really moved around the base paths.”

BERTHOUD — Silver Creek broke open a tight game by scoring three runs in each of the final two innings, sending Berthoud to a defeat in the season opener at Sommers Field.

Matt Jorissen weaved in and out of trouble through five innings, allowing just one hit, but walking six and striking out six, allowing one earned run. Aaron Hardy had two hits out of the lead-off spot, and Robert Ross drove in both runs for the Spartans.

“Matt Jorissen was solid through five, and Brayden Picket pitched a good sixth, but we had a few miscues behind him,” BHS coach Buddy Kouns said. “The game was close through five and could have gone either way. There is a lot to be encouraged by. We will clean some things up and continue to build and get better.”

ERIE — Thompson Valley was able to convert off a couple of corner kicks, but the Eagles fell one goal short on the road in a loss to Erie.

“I am very proud of the way the Eagles played tonight. They were coming off a very hard-fought game the night before against top-ranked D’Evelyn,” TVHS coach Randy Chase said. “They were all very tired and worn out but still stood tall and worked hard, burning all they had. They fought all the way to the end. A coach can’t ask for more.”

The Eagles were on the board first off Stephanie Gwilliam’s corner kick, and the team stood tied at 1 at half. Marit Klagge scored for TV to tie the game at 2 in the second half.

Loveland opened up its return to the 5A scene by picking up six wins in taking down Legacy in a Front Range League dual at the LHS pool, complete with five state cuts.

“Tonight was a great way to start the season, I’m really encouraged by everyone’s performance and determination,” LHS coach Sarah Vlatkovich said. “They’re all tired and sore from the first couple weeks of hard training, and to still swim so strongly is a really positive sign. We’ve moved back up to 5A so the times are more challenging, but we were still able to qualify two relays and two individual swimmers with Jakob Borrman and Danny Turner. I’m excited to see what everyone can do in the coming weeks.”

Borrman won both the 50- and 100-yard freestyles, while Turner won the 100 breaststroke. Both 200 relays — the medley and free — hit the qualifying time, with Gavin Quinlan winning the 200 individual medley.

WINDSOR — Thompson Valley came away with a tight victory over a Windsor squad which won the regional title last year, an uplifting development for coach Jay Klagge.

The Eagles picked up two wins at singles from Dasha Mulholland and Kalysa Christopher out of the first and third spots; Danielle Sobraske and Emily Black won at No. 1 doubles, with the No. 3 team of Emmalee Dekkers and Ryley Williams nailing down a win in three sets.

“Our doubles teams really tried to extend their aggressiveness and range at the net, something we didn’t do enough of last week,” Klagge said. “And Dasha and Kalysa were really patient and mentally together in both of their singles matches. The line scores were 3-3 and the winner of the third-set tiebreak was going to win the match. Fortunately, Emmalee and Ryley were able to stay calm and focus and really served and returned well to bring home the win (it ended on a Williams forehand smash). Our team was real excited with the result.”

BROOMFIELD — Loveland posted a second impressive dual win, snagging all four doubles matches in the road win over Broomfield.

“Our doubles teams worked well together with smart, aggressive play,” LHS coach Heidi Abrahamson said. “No. 1 doubles also showed mental toughness by refocusing to get the win in the third set. Overall I am happy with everyone’s play; good things are happening on the court.”

The Indians’ top doubles tandem of Allison Woodard and Megan Lindsey won a match of extremes, winning 6-2 in the first and third sets, dropping the second 6-1. Beilynn Geiss won at No. 1 singles without dropping a game, with the other four victories coming in straight sets.
