This is maudlin, melodramatic, overwritten garbage.
I’ve read the first three chapters and already we have:

> the heroine running for her life from an abusive boyfriend who beats her and is planning on bringing her to sex parties to share her with his friends.

> heroine is chased into an abandoned warehouse by street thugs looking to rape her and she hides out in a grimy office where she passes out from hunger.

> hero and his goons - who call him ‘boss’ repeatedly a la bad NYC mobster (we are in Toronto btw) - enter this warehouse and proceed to execute a hit on some random goombas tied up on the floor.

> heroine wakes up in time to witness the murder and throws up, alerting the goons to her presence.

> ‘Boss’ grabs heroine with his hands covered in blood and starts to interrogate her.

> heroine begs for ‘Boss’ to kill her quickly and take the money she has in her pockets to donate to a charity for abused women (wtf?!?).

> ‘Boss’ is intrigued by this selfless beauty and mesmerized by her, he puts down his gun, and his goons ask if they can ‘deal with her’ because they want to ‘play with her a bit before’ (this will be the third rape attempt on said heroine in under an hour, mind you)

> heroine grabs ‘Boss’s’ gun and puts it under her chin, again making ‘Boss’ promise to donate her money to charity...of course he will, he is a murdering crime boss of some sort, they can always be counted on to keep their words. (I can’t even at this point).

> gun misfires and ‘Boss’ charges heroine and presses her safely to his strong masculine chest...heroine is instantly calmed and trusting (wtf again).

> goon repeats his offer to ‘take care of heroine’ but ‘Boss’ has inside info about this goon. You see this goon has been running a child pornography ring in secret. ‘Boss’ confronts goon by bringing goon’s wife out to confess. ‘Boss’ offs both goon and goon’s wife.

> heroine throws up again.

> ‘Boss’ assures heroine that he is not a bad guy but in fact a good guy working amongst the bad guys to get vigilante type justice, or something. It’s vague, not really sure what the author thought up here.

> ‘Boss’ then informs heroine that they are now going to his house so she can be seen by a doctor and then they will be married because she ‘knows too much and can’t be let go’.

That’s the first three chapters folks. I’m dizzy from all this overblown nonsense. It feels like the author may have been high when she wrote this. It is in no way like anything I’ve read from Moreland before. Is she trying to veer away from small town saccharine sweet love stories into dark mafia but thought she needed to write every possible terrible scenario into her first few chapters?

Also this is set in Toronto but reads like she is in some war torn third world Gotham with rapists galore and abandoned warehouses. I live in Toronto and the real estate here is crazy expensive, no one is leaving a multi million dollar warehouse abandoned. And seriously, if this woman was in so much trouble why didn’t she just go to the front desk at the hotel where her boyfriend held her captive and ask for police to be called? This is Canada ffs. 🙄

I can’t, you guys, I just can’t. I’m out.

The Boss is book one in the Men of Hidden Justice series by Melanie Moreland. This was previously published as a short story in the Take Me To Bed Collection. New content has been added and is now a full length romantic suspense.

Evie is on the run from a nightmare beyond anything she could ever have imagined. Injured, scared and exhausted, she is hiding so she can rest, just for awhile. Until she is found. Not by the man she is hiding from, but from another danger. A man whose crime she has witnessed. She’s sure that this is the end. But instead, he gives her a choice. One of those choices are to marry him.

Matteo Campari is head of a deadly organization. At first glance, he seems to have no soul. He shows no emotion. But for some reason, he is promising Evie his protection in exchange for her vows. Can she believe him? Or is she walking from one evil into another?

Evie finds herself having to make very fast decisions on who to trust. She finds herself having to adapt to a complete new way of life. As she gets to know Matteo, she quickly realizes that there are two sides to this man, the man who is all business and shows no emotion, and the side he saves for her. It’s that side that she finds herself falling in love with.

This was so good. I thought Evie was so strong. She had to learn so quickly how to accept this new life. Both Evie and Matteo were learning how to deal with their feelings for each other. But will Evie ever really be safe? Can Matteo protect her? Will they ever really be able to have a normal life together? Now I can’t wait for the next book in the series, Second In Command.

“Forever. You are now mine forever.”

"Come to me. Let me be the light for you."
This was my first Melanie Moreland book. I have no idea what drew me to it, but I wanted to read it badly. When I finally got it, I read it in less than a day. The Boss ticked every box for me.
I'm finding it hard to write about, because it really was everything I expected it to be, and then some.
These two characters got to me in different ways, and if there are people like this out there in the world (and I'm sure there are), I hope they get a happily ever after just like Matteo and Evie did.

"I am more than what you think. If you give me the chance, I can prove it to you."
Matteo was simply incredible. He's two sides of the same coin, one dark – the boss, the fierce, hardened, menacing man he needs to be –, and the other lighter – the protective man who does everything for those he loves. He tries to keep them separate. In fact, he always has, and no one's ever seen the lighter side of him.

"She had become everything I wanted, everything I needed."
Evie escaped a fate worse than death at the hands of her boyfriend. When she could, she just ran. She has no money, no one to turn to, no friends, no family. Nothing and no one to fight for, or who would fight for her. Completely lost, afraid, and alone. My heart broke for her at the start of the book.

"I am more than what you think. If you give me the chance, I can prove it to you."
Evie jumps out of the frying pan and into the fire, or so it seems. Having witnessed a crime, she's afraid she's going to die herself, until she's given a choice. She can marry the criminal, a man she knows nothing about, except that he seems to be the lesser of two evils. As it turns out, he's a lot more than that.

"Yes. Tell me what you want." His voice dropped. “You might get it."
I slammed my hand on the table, my desire overtaking my fear. "You, Matteo! Dammit! I want you!"

It's not supposed to be about love. For him, it's supposed to be about marrying her to ensure she never tells anyone what she's seen, while keeping her protected. For her, it's about being safe. And then both of them catch feelings for each other. It's beautiful. He never allowed himself to be anything but the ruthless man he is. She was never allowed to love someone freely. They both need to learn to make it work.

"It is rare anyone talks back to me," he’d admitted. "For my tiny slip of a wife to challenge me—" he grinned" —frankly, it turns me on."
There's a lot of chemistry between them from the start, and then it grows and evolves. Bringing her into his world is hard, but she keeps up, and gives as good as she gets. After everything she's been through, she's strong, she's tough, and she's there for whatever he needs. And he's never far from her.
I know a lot of people have a thing against what they consider to be 'overbearing' heroes. I'm not one of them. I love Matteo's protectiveness and possessiveness.

The suspense element is riveting, and I couldn't stop myself from reading. The tension is palpable, and makes this book a real page-turner.

"I have never had someone to return to until now. Until you."
In the end, you realize Matteo and Evie came into each other's lives because there was a purpose to it. They were meant to save each other in every way that matters.

I can't wait for the second book!

Wow! This dark sexy romance is a page-turner I can’t stop reading until I read everything. It’s so good. I was impatient, anxious and desperate to know everything. Evie makes a decision that will change her life and as a result Matteo makes his decision changing both life even more. I loved everything, the characters, the plot and the atmosphere. I want a house like Matteo's and an island too! Where is my Matteo? Highly recommended. Thanks Melanie for this wonderful book.

The Boss by Melanie Moreland Hidden Justice book 1

This book blew my mind, I'll explain why. I am a loyal fan of Melanie and enjoyed her sweet and spicy romance and this book is different than her usual but it's a amazing.
Mateo is a man that has alot of responsibilities as the Boss (Hidden Justice) this is the perfect title for series.
He finds Evie who has seen something she shouldn't have but marries her to protect her and her safe.
Evie was running away from a bad situation and scared She agreed to let him protect her.
This story is more vigilante justice than mafia this is story is filled with suspense and full of steam and sexy Alpha protective hero and a strong Heroine that captures him at first site
One thing that makes this story unique. and different it had realistic feel and qualities in the relationship aspect as both Mateo and Evie had to learn how to give and take and understanding, adjust to new way of life. The bumps they had along the way we're seamlessly put in the story and fit perfectly no unnecessary drama
This is a insta attraction and insta love, I couldn't keep my 👀 f the kindle it was fast paced and twist and turns. The Character Development and the HEA was definitely awesome. Of course her famous Epilogues I can't wait for 2nd in command..

The Boss was an extremely captivating and entertaining story. Matteo and Evie’s journey was sweet, sexy and spellbinding. The author penned an intriguing, kept me on the edge of my seat, captivating read that I devoured in one sitting. There was the right amount of action that packed a punch, sensuality that burned hot between the pair and heartwarming moments that will make you swoon. This is a book not to be missed. Perfect for any reader looking for a darker, still Melanie Moreland fashioned type of read where you connect and fall for the characters and storyline.

AUDIOBOOK REVIEW:
Once again John Lane and Maxine Mitchell blew me away with their narration. There is no one more perfect to perform Matteo and Evie’s characters like them. Maxine’s inflection is meek and pleasant to the ear; it is absolutely how I imagined Evie to sound whereas John’s deep baritone had me shivering from the sheer perfection; it was strong and simply Matteo. This Robin Hood-esque story by Melanie Moreland—good guys doing bad things for good reason—had me captivated when I read the book but listening to the audio enhanced the story by infinity percent. My heart and mind felt it all. If I could, I would definitely give this more than 5 stars because it was that extraordinary!

The Boss
(Men of Hidden Justice #1)
Written by: Melanie Moreland

What Melanie Moreland gives readers in The Boss is a story that takes us into the dark seedy underworld. Where disgusting and despicable criminals prey on the innocents of the world. Those who fear no one will soon fear The Boss, Matteo Campari and the men who work with him.

From the first sentence in this story readers are held captive, we run with Evelyn and can feel her thoughts, her fear and despair. Just when she thinks she is safe, she realizes she is in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Matteo Campari, a man who has chosen to fight for those who are taken advantage of; people men, women or children who are prey and carry only a dollar value for those the people Campari seeks to bring to his justice. A man who realizes shortly after finding Evelyn that things are about to change for him.

A man who cares meets a woman who needs to be cared for, who needs to feel safe and who needs to have her life returned to her.

Like all of her books Melanie Moreland gives readers a story where love is found and nurtured. The Boss goes farther though, Matteo still has work to do, Evie wants to go back to a normal kind of life, but is that possible? Will it ever be possible? On top of that a threat hangs over their heads and there will be a reckoning for Matteo, Evie and others.

The Boss is one of those “I can’t put it down” kinds of books. It’s the kind of book where you wait for good to win over evil and when you think you can let your guard down you realize the dark is back and it’s right behind you.

Melanie Moreland has stepped into the dark side of storytelling and she looks very comfortable here and I for one am glad she’s arrived!

What can I say about the book other than READ THIS BOOK!!!Matteo was all the alpha protective goodness we love in our romantic heroes. Evie was the heroine allowed to blossom and find her foot with a man who sees her as his life equal.

I am a big fan of romantic suspense. Okay, let's spend a moment with that topic before back to the book. I feel like with the recent onslaught of the bully, non-consent, humiliation, anti-hero tropes in dark (I call taboo) tropes out there, that 'true' romantic suspense has been getting a bad rap with being 'too dark for me' with readers. Dear authors - I get it. You are stuck with the categories retailers give you. You don't go erotica because it limits your advertising. So Dear Followers when you look at my shelves remember - my definition of romantic suspense is: romance - between uber-sexy Matteo and Evie that ends in HEA plus suspense - Melanie Moreland creates some scenes of peril that had my heart in my throat.

Men of Hidden Justice - oh baby YES!! They are protective, possessive going to do whatever to protect what is theirs. Yup give me a case of the swoons. Matteo is a driven, unforgiving white hat shooting up bad guys in the black hat world. He is not without faults which makes him the perfect bad boy to love for me.

Evie - damn girl you just cannot catch a break. You run from one uber sh!tty circumstance right into the arms of a dark angel. But wow - you show your inner strength by right off the bat calling destiny in your own hands. From there, we watch you grow from cautionary to bada$$.

Things I loved:
- the book. Like the entire thing.
- the peril, the love story, the peril.
- Speaking of the love story can I give ten stars for the steamy scenes? Yes, I can.
- Well written, had fantastic pacing, devoured in a day (first time. Second time I was reading along with whomever I could)

Things to consider:
- This is not your typical 'Melanie Moreland' book. Oh do not fear - she brings the romance to the table in buckets. But what a ride she starts you on. I can firsthand say she wrote it and earned her moniker "Canadian Grey".
- Triggers - this is hard because I was not triggered. But I get it, some readers don't want off-page references. Just remember it's romantic suspense, not dark romance.

Here is the thing - even if I was not part of #TeamMoreland I would be shoving this book in your face. It ticks all the boxes in my romantic suspense needs. It is more The Wire and less Castle. Or as my book friend said "More Gotham Less Metropolis".

I can tell you - Marcus and Julian bring once again an exceptional-paced story, different from contemporary romance with a thread of peril each spun in only a way Melanie Moreland can make romantic suspense accessible. You can add these two to your TBR > Second-In-Command & The Commander

Where does Melanie find those hot characters?

Matteo is not the man you would like for your daughter… I mean, he is the man you would like for yourself 😍

Now going to the book.. Matteo and Evie’s love story is hot and sweet. It’s a little unbelievable if you think of it out of the book.. like this couldn’t happen nowadays.. but the way Melanie explains it trough the characters totally convinces you and traps you from the beginning until the end. I couldn’t stop reading.

I found it short, I would have loved to read more of them and I can’t wait to read more books about the other characters, like Marcus or even Julian..

I hope Melanie gives us more books about these hot/sexy/strong/sweet men

I truly loved this story. From the very beginning, the story grabs hold of you and sucks you in. It's full of intrigue and suspense and constantly has you wondering what's going to happen next. It's tempered with sweet romance and raw chemistry. Definitely an A+ for M. Moreland...or in this case 5 stars!!

Evie and Mateo are the sweetest couple....he gives her the strength and support she needs to heal, both emotionally and physically, while she gives him everything he never knew he wanted. Love.

This story is different than what I'm used to from Melanie, but that just makes it extra special. You still get your Alpha male fix and a strong heroine that you can't help but envy.

100% recommend!!

Moreland proves that she can do no wrong when it comes to capturing an audience. Mateo and Evie pull emotions into a neverending abyss of dangerous intrigue and breathtaking romance. The Boss is darker than I expected it to be. From brutal honesty to haunting suspense, Moreland dances in the shadow of fire and it's us readers that feel the burn.

I loved this story. It was very different from any of the other series that I have read. It started out dark but ended up being a sweet romance. From the first page readers are held captive with Matteo and Avie’s story, they have an intense connection from the start. Fate had put them together, Matteo given a chance at love and Evie was given a second chance at life. At first you might think that Matteo Campari is a bad “mafia” guy, but later you learn that he helps take out the bad guys that hurt the innocent. He is devoted to his work, but when he meets Evie and helps her, his whole world changes.

As the story is told you see that Matteo is growing into being a husband and Evie is trying to live a normal life. We see the vulnerable side of Matteo and Evie becomes stronger. He truly falls in love with her. Protects her at all costs. Evie is learning to navigate her new life and falls for Matteo too.

I couldn’t put this book down!!! I think I finished it in a day. I just had to know how the story ended. Can’t wait for the next ones to come out.

This is slightly different from Ms Moreland but it still has her signature sweet, spicy and heartfelt love story running through it.

Evelyn finds herself in the worst possible situation….then an unexpected encounter with a seriously sexy, yet completely terrifying Matteo turns her whole world completely upside down.

This story is suspenseful and thrilling at times. As Evie and Matteo try to navigate their new found living situation, the threat of danger from his line of work is never far away. It was interesting to have the female ‘left at home’ perspective for a change….when usually these types of stories follow the action this was slightly different. I think I would have liked a bit more of the criminality as well to balance out the sweetness.

I enjoyed the writing as usual and the interactions between the characters was nicely portrayed….the dialogue seemed a little too polite at times but I got the impression this was intended and that Matteo especially has a very formal demeanour.

I’m very much looking forward to our next visit with the Men of Justice….:-)

What can I say that all the other reviews don't? You NEED to read this if you love hot, Alfa guys who love and protect their women! Matteo never let his soft side show because it would be a death sentence for him and his crew in the world they lived in. Evie brought out a part of Matteo he didn't know he had, and her kind and loving nature filled a void in his life. Before her, he was existing, now he was living. The world is full of some awful people and Matteo was trying to make it a better place, just not the traditional way.

I read this book previously as a short story in parts and loved it then. Now it has been enhanced and made into a full length book and it is EVEN better! I am so excited for this new series from one of my all-time favorite authors!

I have read every book by this author and am so impressed with her range. She can go from sweet and spicy insta-love, to a judgmental jerk of a businessman who makes a 180, to a charming Hollywood movie star, and to a series of billionaire real estate developers who are best friends, to this masterpiece!

In The Boss, I knew I was in for something a little bit sinister, but Matteo Campari, our hero, completely won my heart. He is a ruthless vigilante and smart businessman who takes no prisoners. He is immersed in his job, but the moment he unexpectedly meets Evie and helps her, his entire world, as he knows it, comes to a halt.

Matteo and his team of “Hidden Justice” members and their wives are the good guys who may or may not take the law into their own hands, rather violently when needed, to rid the world of evil. As the Boss, he commands respect and is such a fierce leader. If you love mafia books, please give this a try. It’s not super dark, I’d say more grey, because our hero is just so wonderful! You will love him, especially the way he reacts to Evie. He is her savior in every way, and even though she should have feared him when they first met, her instincts told her to trust him. She’s a bit on the submissive side but knows it’s for her own safety, and his commands give me shivers!

My eyes were wide open from page one, and trust me, you will be there for it all. Melanie is such a vast descriptive writer, you will know exactly what kind of weather they are experiencing, all the sights and sounds of their surroundings, and when someone gets what they deserve–if you get my drift. There were many times I held my breath while reading The Boss because this genre is generally not in my wheelhouse. But I trust this author, and she kept me engaged the entire time, totally invested in their cause.

Matteo and Evie are strangers when they first meet and are instinctively drawn to one another. Their budding romance quickly led to marriage for her own protection, and they grow from friends to lovers and a force to be reckoned with. This suspenseful book has plenty of action and will keep you on your toes, as well as fanning yourself during all the steamy scenes, because after all, this is a romance!

I love how honest he always is with her, his strong and protective nature, and how he just cherishes her as his wife. I love when he uses Italian terms of endearment, and how sweet and humble he is when they are alone. He is never afraid to admit his feelings, and I laughed when he was trying to be respectful on their honeymoon and she just wasn’t having it! You go girl! Evie supports and loves Matteo completely, and her devotion and innocence is such a breath of fresh air and brings joy into his usually violent world.

This book is told in first person, dual point of view, which is my favorite, as I always want to know what they are thinking and feeling, and I absolutely loved the epilogue into the future. Can’t wait for more in this series when Marcus, Matteo’s Second in Command takes over!

I loved this story. I just want to say right off the bat that I am NOT a fan of Mafia type stories and I went into this book with my own expectations. Matteo and Evie’s story blew my expectations right out of the water.

“It is my greatest joy to make you happy, Evie.”

Matteo Campari is definitely an uber alpha, always in charge. But when he comes across Evie he is more than smitten and it isn’t long before he knows that she is the real Boss.

“To the world, you’re simply my wife, Evie. To me, you are my world.”

As a fan of insta love, Matteo won me over right from the start and his complete devotion to Evie melted my heart.

The circumstances under which Matteo and Evelyn meet are the most strenuous either has been in. The chord that binds them is so strong that neither can escape it. This story is so different from anything that I have read from Ms. Moreland and I sat on the edge of my chair waiting to see what happened next. Matteo is not used to looking after anyone as close to him as Evie. His drive has to change. Evie hasn't had a man like Matteo in her life ever. He is so protective and loving. The two of them have a lot of growing together to do. I loved it!! Gah!!! I want to say so much more but that would be giving things away that you need to read for yourself. Know this. This series is shaping up to have very alpha males with feisty heroines to bring them to their knees. My favorite kind of both.

“Do not look at me with fear, beautiful girl. You need never fear me. I love you, and you are my world.”

“The Boss” is book one in the ‘Men of Hidden Justice’ series by Melanie Moreland. I first read this when it was a short story included as part of the ‘Take Me to Bed Collection’ and it was so annoying because the excellence of the lead characters demanded a longer story. I’m so glad the author found time to give them what they (and we the readers) needed!

Evie is a woman who’s been viciously abused, badly beaten and totally terrified. Desperately fleeing two big dangers, she stumbles into an even more horrifying situation. Matteo, the cold-hearted perpetrator of violent acts she witnesses, gives her a shockingly unexpected choice. Is she willing to tie herself irrevocably to a killer if it’s the only way to save her own life? This is a book that confounds expectations. More than once it seems to be going in certain directions … and then it changes. Matteo is a man of dramatic contradictions, and we get to figure him out along with Evie. She sees herself as weak, but he immediately recognizes that she’s incredibly strong.

Evie and Matteo are both wonderfully complex characters. Somehow, Matteo becomes a deliciously swoon-worthy leading man, despite the fact that he’s a murderer. I still don’t know how the author managed to accomplish that! The conclusion to the story of Evie and Matteo is startling and intense, and the epilogue gives us a satisfying glimpse of the future they both deserve. Many of the secondary characters are equally intriguing and make you want to know more about them. I’m looking forward to the next book in the series.

What can I say about The Boss…. It’s not your typical underworld I guess one can say story. It touches on some touchy subjects, but not too badly. Of course since it’s a Melanie story there is so much more then meets the eye and as always a happy ending. This is also not a typical Melanie story so it might not be for everyone. If you can get past some of the going ons it’s worth the read.

For a story that started out so dark, it ended up being a sweet romance!

Evie was a woman who basically came from nothing, had no one, and was a fool's punching bag. Matteo was the kind of man who ate fools for breakfast. And when Evie sees some things that she should have run away from, her life, as worthless as she saw it, changed for the better.

While I did find parts of the story dragged a bit, I was captivated. I do wish that Matteo's action was on page rather than having to deal with the emotional fallout because of it. I guess I wanted the tone from the beginning to flow right through. However, I was still entertained by the writing and all of the characters that I'm sure will feature in some way in the books to come.

At some point, I thought with Evie being passive, submissive, and fragile would get on my nerves... but it didn't happen. I really enjoyed the dynamic between her and Matteo. He was a man who was used to getting his way in all things, but showed a softer side to the woman he loved. She was a woman who didn't seem to know her own mind sometimes and seemed in need of direction. And yet, not once did I find her pathetic or worthy of pity. She found the perfect man for her in the most imperfect of circumstances.

Why can't I stumble upon some hot vigilantes, killing some bad people, and find myself a husband too?

Ms Moreland just proved that she can write all the different words to make your heart go pitter patter. What an amazing heroic... trusting... "dark" tale. Loved the storyline that kept me on my toes.

Matteo Campari lives in an unpredictable world filled with violence. He's a vigilante in the dark underworld that works with an elite crew in an organization that eliminated the bad people. Then he crosses paths with a beautiful woman he felt the need to help. He was drawn to her, and couldn't walk away. She's become the light in his life, and quickly took up a place in his heart. -Up close, his face was beautiful- the sort of beauty that easily distorted into fierce malevolence. A devil in disguise.

-I was mesmerized. His voice was a quiet, comforting murmur in the room. I found him compelling, and, strangely, I wanted to be close to him.

-There was no doubt, no fear- only need. Need that he built and stoked.

-I craved him. I had never known desire for a man the way I did for Matteo.

The Boss (Men of Hidden Justice #1) by Melanie Moreland was previously published as a short story in the Take Me To Bed Collection. New content has been added for a complete full length novel. The Boss is a captivating story full of suspense, chemistry, emotion, angst, danger, pleasure and love. I loved this swoony, delicious alpha, and can't wait for more of the Men of Hidden Justice! <333

This is a little different from Melanie’s usual sweet romance books. She is such a talented writer. She can write anything she puts her mind to.

From the explosive first chapter to the sweet epilogue, The Boss had me sitting on the edge of my seat. Filled with heart stopping tension, steamy chemistry and heartfelt emotion, the book is one lovely Rollercoaster.

Matteo and Evie were complicated, rich characters and their journey to happily ever after is filled with bumps and bruises. Their love never wavers though and I found myself cheering for this unlikely couple.

I love all of Melanie Moreland's books and while this one was different than her usual, it contained the same beautiful writing and heart-tugging emotions as the others. I can't wait to read more from this series!!

This is what I wrote when I read this a Novella a year ago….

Melanie Moreland has surprised me a really good way. I would never had expected this type of novella from her. I had no idea what I was getting into when I started to read this book I just knew that it was written by Melanie Moreland and I had to read it.

Evie.... scared, broken, and running from an abusive boyfriend

Matteo... a protector of the innocent, a boss

This novella had something with every turn of a page.... action, suspense, and romance.

Evie and Matteo’s start was anything but normal, but to watch their relationship to grow was WOW.

Evie quickly becomes someone unlike the Evie that we were introduced to in the first few pages.

This two together WOW!!!!

Really all I can say is that you will not regret reading this novella, and if you don’t already love Melanie Moreland you will.

And now that it is a full novel, and is now apart of a series… YOU guys need these characters in your life. I promise you will not be disappointed. It is probably one of my favorite novels she has written. I love these two characters so much, and I can’t wait for book 2 in these series.

MUST READ!!!!!!!

Ms. Moreland is a very talented lady because she can write sweet and sexy romances and then switch gears and write a thoroughly enjoyable "mafia-type" intense read like she's been writing them her whole career! The Boss is the first book in the "Men of Hidden Justice" series and it's most definitely romantic suspense at its best. Matteo and Evie's rather unconventional start to their relationship doesn't lessen their very intense connection. Their journey is loaded with the perfect amount of action and suspense, along with sweet and sexy moments. Some of my favorite chapters were when Evie brought out the other side of Matteo--the really deep, emotional heartwarming moments that are distinctly Melanie Moreland. I wouldn't necessarily call this a "dark" romance, but it's definitely different for this author and she nailed it! I can't wait to read the next two books in this series and I hope she continues to amaze us with her unending talent for writing such diverse and varied reads. Another 5+ star read from one of my favorite authors.

5 Star Review The Boss (Men of Hidden Justice #1) by Melanie Moreland

I’m not a huge fan of Mafia romance stories but as it was written by Melanie Moreland, an author whose writing I admire, I decided to take a chance and I was so glad I did. When I first read this as a novella I was hooked, the extended story blew me away.

The Boss was a suspenseful romantic story about Matteo and Evie and I was invested from the first to the last chapter. Romantic suspense is not a genre I would normally associate with Ms. Moreland however after reading this book it is obvious that she has a talent for it.

It was well written with characters whose story you cannot help but quickly become invested in. Evie is running from an abusive boyfriend and Matteo is just the man to protect her. Their journey was rocky but oh what a journey it was. The chemistry and steam between Matteo and Evie was smoking hot.

I was on the edge of my seat whilst reading this book and cannot wait to read more in this gritty and refreshing new series from Melanie Moreland.

There is nothing typical about Melanie Moreland’s new novel The Boss. Not the characters, not the story, not the intense reaction it drew from me. Matteo and Evie’s story absolutely enthralled me. Moreland took the shotgun wedding trope and turned it on its ear. And by doing so she created a deeply passionate, wickedly enticing story about two people who were destined to be each other’s forever. Their yin and yang. Their dark and light. And holy hell is it hot! The plot advances swiftly with strong character interaction, suspense, and even beautifully infused humor. Matteo is the man every woman secretly wishes really existed but would have no idea what to do with if he barged into their lives. And Evie pulls every HEA heartstring in my body. I wanted all the good and amazing things for her, because she deserves them. Moreland sets a tone that kept me peeking around every corner. I knew there had to be more lurking, and then, BAM (no, not that BAM)! There it was! Do not let your guard down, dear reader. I finished the book already greedy and eager for the next installment in the series, and not because I need more Matteo and Evie (although that would be wonderful), but because of the connections I already feel to the other characters in the book who I can’t wait to visit with on an even deeper level. This book is seriously high on heat and heartrate elevation. Prepare for the hangover, and hold on tight!
