Yamaha RX-V6A 7.2-channel home theater receiver

Use the RX-V6A as part of a high-performance home theater system.

Ideal for a Dolby Atmos system

The seven-channel RX-V6A is ideal for powering a 5.1.2 Dolby Atmos or DTS:X™ system — that's the traditional five speakers and subwoofer configuration, plus a pair of upward-firing or in-ceiling speakers for overhead effects.

Advanced video processing for movies and more

Yamaha made sure the RX-V6A is compatible with the latest video technology. Three of its HDMI inputs support 8K/60Hz and 4K/120Hz content — perfect for high-quality sources like a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray player, a next-gen gaming system, or an Apple TV. (The other four inputs support 4K/60 content.)

Enjoy music from a variety of sources

You get plenty of options for playing music, too. Stream tunes from your phone or tablet through Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or Apple AirPlay 2. Or, use the built-in phono input to connect your turntable. You can even play high-resolution tracks from a USB thumb drive or networked computer.

As a bonus, the RX-V6A supports wireless multi-room music playback when paired with additional MusicCast components. It's also simple to operate, thanks to Yamaha's superb control app for your phone or tablet.

7-Channel Discrete Amplifier: The Yamaha RX-V6A AV receiver employs fully discrete power amplification for clean, dynamic sound. The RX-V6A's seven-channel amplifier section is rated at 100 watts (into 8-ohm, at 20-20kHz, with 0.06% THD, driving 2 channels).

Intelligent Amplifier Assignment: Intelligent Amp Assignment automatically assigns amplifier channels of the Yamaha AV receiver to certain speakers depending on what speaker layout has been selected and what content is being played back. You can connect up to nine speakers to the AV receiver and it will determine which seven speakers need amplification. You can choose from a variety of amplifier speaker layout configurations.

    • 7.1ch or 5.1.2ch Surround: In this configuration, up to nine speakers (Front L/R, Front Presence L/R, Center, Surround L/R, & Surround Back L/R) can be connected to the AV receiver. When Cinema DSP 3D is on or a Dolby Atmos soundtrack is being played, the two Front Presence or Dolby Atmos speakers will be powered and not the two Surround Back speakers. When Cinema DSP 3D is off or Dolby Atmos is not playing, this situation is reversed and the Front Presence or Dolby Atmos speakers turn off while the Surround Back speakers are powered. Bi-amp and Zone 2 speakers are not available in this mode.
    • Dolby Atmos (5.1.2ch) + Zone 2: In this setup, you can hook up a 5.1.2ch Dolby Atmos speaker system in the main room and a pair of speakers in Zone 2 to the receiver. When Zone 2 is off, all seven channels of your Dolby Atmos speaker system will be powered. However, when Zone 2 is turned on, power to the Front Height, Overhead, or Dolby Atmos speakers will be cut off and directed to the pair of speakers in Zone; limiting you to only 5.1ch surround in the main room. Bi-amp & Surround Back speakers are not available in this setup.
    • 7.1ch + Zone 2: In this configuration, up to nine speakers (Front L/R, Center, Surround L/R, Surround Back L/R, and Zone 2) can be connected to the AV receiver. When Zone 2 is off, all seven channels will be used in the Main Zone. However, when Zone 2 is on, power to the two surround back channels will be directed to the two speakers in Zone 2 and the Main Zone will receive five channels of power. The same or different analog input sources/volume settings can be applied to both zones. Bi-amp, Front Presence, & Dolby Atmos speakers are not available in this mode.
    • 5.1ch Bi-Amp: Up to five speakers (Front L/R, Center, & Surround L/R) can be connected to the AV receiver. The Surround Back amplifier channels of the AV receiver are reassigned to bi-amp the front speakers. A bi-amplification connection uses two amplifiers for one speaker. One amplifier is connected to the woofer section of a loudspeaker while the other is connected to the combined midrange and tweeter section. With this arrangement each amplifier operates over a limited frequency range, making its job easier. Zone 2, Front Presence, & Dolby Atmos speakers are not available in this mode.

Wireless Surround: You can combine this AV receiver with Yamaha's MusicCast 20 wireless streaming speakers (sold separately) and enjoy the convenience of creating a home theater with wireless rear speakers in a 5.1 channel system. What's more, you get stunningly realistic sound with a clean, clutter-free setup. You will need to download the MusicCast Controller app onto your Apple iOS or Android OS device for setup.

Note: Wireless Surround requires that the AV receiver and MusicCast 20 speakers be on the same wireless WiFi network.

32-Bit/384kHz DAC: The receiver utilizes a high-quality 384kHz/32-bit Burr-Brown DAC (PCM5102A) that supports Hi-Res music files (such as FLAC and DSD), as well as supports multichannel surround formats (such as Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, Dolby TrueHD, and DTS-HD).

Compatible Digital Audio Formats: The AV receiver supports the following stereo & multichannel digital audio formats through its HDMI jacks and optical/coax digital inputs.

Digital Audio Connector Audio Signal Type Audio Signal Format
    HDMI
    (7 Inputs/1 Output)
High Definition Audio Bitstream Dolby Atmos, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD
DTS:X, DTS-HD Master Audio, DTS-HD High Resolution, DTS Express
Bitstream Dolby Digital, DTS, DTS-ES, DTS 96/24
     PCM 2ch to 8ch (32-192kHz, 16/20/24-bit)
    DSD 2ch to 6ch (2.8MHz, 1-bit)
    Optical/Coaxial
    (1 Optical Input/1 Coaxial Input)
Bitstream Dolby Digital, DTS, DTS ES, DTS 96/24
    PCM 2ch to 6ch, (32-96kHz, 16/20/24-bit)

Immersive Surround Sound: The Yamaha RX-V6A AV receiver goes beyond regular surround with the latest immersive surround sound formats from Dolby Atmos and DTS:X. The RX-V6A offers 7-channels of amplification with support for up to a 5.1.2ch home theater speaker setup.

    • Dolby Atmos: The Yamaha AV receiver will enhance properly designed systems with Dolby Atmos where sound comes alive from all directions, including overhead, to fill the home theater with astonishing clarity, power, detail and depth. The RX-V6A has the processing power to run a more enveloping 5.1.2ch Dolby Atmos layout utilizing front-height, ceiling mounted, or Dolby Atmos-enabled speakers (sold separately). A 5.1.2 speaker configuration is based upon a traditional 5.1 speaker layout complemented by two Front Height, Overhead, or Dolby Atmos-enabled speakers.
      • Dolby Surround: Dolby Surround offers an enhanced cinema experience to your 2ch and multichannel movie soundtracks using your existing 5.1ch, 7.1ch or Dolby Atmos speaker setup. Dolby Surround enhances audio definition by improving the spatial dimension and overall audio definition of movie soundtracks. It does this by using four distinct surround zones that provide greater control over the exact placement of each detail in a movie sound track, so audio can be matched more accurately to the video on screen; this means more depth and greater realism for your movies. As a result, individual sounds are clearer and more distinct. It also improves the surround sound experience across the entire theater by widening the listening "sweet spot".
      • Dolby Atmos Height Virtualization: Dolby Atmos Height Virtualization provides immersive audio without height-channel or overhead speakers, creating virtual height effects in a 5.1ch, 7.1ch or 2.1ch speaker arrangement. Dolby Atmos Height Virtualization applies carefully designed "height-cue" filters to the overhead audio components of your content's soundtrack before they are mixed into your loudspeakers to create the sensation of sound above you.
    • DTS:X: DTS:X is the next generation object-based, multi-dimensional audio technology from DTS. Unbound from channels, DTS:X conveys the fluid movement of sound to create an incredibly rich, realistic and immersive soundscape - in front of, behind, beside and above the audience - more accurately than ever before. DTS:X offers the ability to automatically adapt the audio to the speaker layout that best fits your space.
      • Neural:X: DTS:X incorporates Neural:X, the latest spatial remapping technology from DTS, which provides a fully immersive output for all types of source content; this includes DTS bitstreams and non-encoded (PCM) data. Neural:X delivers a thrilling sense of immersive sound to your speaker layout regardless of the original source format.
      • DTS Neo:6: DTS Neo:6 is an advanced matrix decoder that takes any two-channel source (including television broadcasts, CDs and DVDs) and expands it into five or six channels. It also provides separate, optimized modes for stereo music materials and matrix surround motion picture soundtracks. DTS Neo:6 brings you a more revealing sound from ordinary stereo and a more expansive home cinema experience.

eARC (Enhanced Audio Return Channel): This feature of the AV receiver's main HDMI monitor output allows audio to be sent from your compatible TV to the receiver through the same HDMI cable already being used to send audio and video to your TV. This eliminates the need for extra cables connected to your television. eARC (Enhanced Audio Return Channel) will support uncomprerssed audio formats like Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, & DTS HD Master Audio - where as the previous ARC (Audio Return Channel) was limited to only Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, DTS, DTS HD, and PCM.

Note: Supported content will be dependent on whether your TV features a HDMI eARC or ARC jack

YPAO RSC Multipoint Sound Optimization: YPAO (Yamaha Parametric room Acoustic Optimizer) analyzes your room acoustics, measures speaker characteristics and adjusts unwanted reflected sounds to optimize every channel of your home theater. R.S.C. (Reflected Sound Control) analyzes room acoustics and measures various speaker characteristics, then calibrates audio parameters to achieve optimum sound at any of eight listening positions. First it checks the speaker connections and phase of each speaker. Then it sends out tones which are captured by the microphone to analyze the room acoustics and sets a variety of parameters; such as the speaker size, the distance of the speakers, and even the volume level; until it achieves the best sound conditions for your room. Using the supplied Optimizer Microphone, YPAO performs the following checks and makes appropriate adjustments to give you the best possible sound from your system:

    • Speaker Check: YPAO checks which speakers are connected and the polarity of each, checks the frequency response of each speaker and sets the appropriate crossover frequency for each channel, checks the distance of each speaker from the listening position and adjusts the delay of each channel, as well as checks and adjusts the volume level of each speaker.
    • RSC (Reflected Sound Control): The receiver also employs YPAO's Reflected Sound Control (RSC) to correct early reflections for studio-quality sound.
    • EQ: Choose between 3 YPAO EQ modes - Natural (adjusts all speakers to a natural sound; useful when the flat setting sounds too bright), Flat (use when all the speakers in the system have similar sound characteristics), or Front (EQs the center and rear speakers to sound like the front; useful when your front speakers are better than the others in the system)
    • DSP Effect Normalization: In addition, YPAO provides DSP Effect Normalization, which varies the Cinema DSP parameters according to the reflected sounds in the room.
    • YPAO Volume: Human ears have less sensitivity to high and low frequencies, especially at lower volumes. YPAO Volume applies loudness EQ correction to automatically adjust high and low frequency levels as volume changes. Using the YPAO measurement results, EQ correction is optimized to your system settings and listening environment.
Note: You can also choose to manually adjust the AV receiver's speaker, crossover, & EQ settings.

Cinema DSP 3D: This unique Yamaha proprietary soundfield creation technology was created by combining measured soundfield data with digital signal processing. Yamaha collected soundfield data from famous concert halls and music clubs around the world, utilizing its wealth of experience in the fields of concert hall design, public address and mixing. By digitizing this vast trove of information and incorporating it into dedicated LSI devices, it effectively reproduces the spaces of concert halls and music clubs in your home. Immerse yourself in the astounding realism of your movies and enter a world of profound theater sound. The AV receiver offers 17 Cinema DSP 3D programs for movies, music, and games. Select from Standard, Spectacle, Sci-Fi, Adventure, Drama, Mono Movie, Sports, Action Game, Role Playing Game, Hall Munich, Hall in Vienna, Chamber, Cellar Club, The Roxy Theater, The Bottom Line, Music Video, or All-Channel Stereo. You can also select from different Cinema DSP 3D modes based on your speaker setup.

    • Virtual Presence Speaker: The actually measured soundfield data in these Cinema DSP 3D programs contain height information. Virtual Presence Speaker mode achieves reproduction of this height information so that it can create the accurate and intensive stereoscopic soundfield in your listening room. With the power of Cinema DSP 3D technology and the Virtual Presence Speaker (VPS) mode, the receiver virtually reproduces the height of the 3D soundfield without actually having front presence speakers.
    • Virtual Cinema DSP: Virtual Cinema DSP is an algorithm that allows you to enjoy DSP soundfield surround effects while using a minimal two-speaker system. Virtual Cinema DSP lets you enjoy the effects of Cinema DSP surround sound without using surround speakers (handy for use in custom installations where some rooms don't have surround speakers). It can be used with the front/center speakers or even with just the two front left and right speakers. This unit will switch to virtual Cinema DSP mode automatically when surround speakers are unavailable.
    • Virtual Cinema Front: With Virtual Cinema Front, you will enjoy virtual 5-channel surround sound with higher quality and resolution by installing surround speakers at the front. You get more flexibility to arrange your speakers inside the room, along with easy enjoyment of high quality surround sound.
    • Silent Cinema: Silent Cinema makes it possible to hear large-scale surround sound through ordinary headphones. This is a variation of Cinema DSP technology that Yamaha developed to let you listen in private to movies and other multi-channel sources for hours without listening fatigue.
Note: You can change the receiver's Cinema DSP effect level (level of the soundfield effect to be added). You can adjust the level of the soundfield effect from -6 dB to +3 dB.

HiFi Sound Modes: The Yamaha RX-V6A offers two HiFi audio modes which bypass the receiver's tone & DSP processing for higher sound quality performance. These HiFi sound modes lets you play back input sources without any soundfield effect processing. When either of these modes is enabled, each speaker produces its own channel audio signal (without soundfield processing). When playing back 2-channel sources, such as a CD player, stereo sound is heard from the front speakers. When playing back multichannel sources, the receiver produces unprocessed multichannel surround sound.

    • Straight: 2-channel stereo sources are output from only the front left and right speakers, while multi-channel sources are decoded straight into the appropriate channels without any additional tone or DSP processing.
    • Direct: Turns off the surround and tone circuitry, as well as deactivates the front-panel and on-screen display, allowing sources to bypass the decoders, DSP processors, and video circuitry of this unit so you can enjoy pure hi-fi sound from 2-channel or multi-channel sources.

Audio Enhancements: The Yamaha RX-V6A offers unique audio enhancements to bring you more enjoyment from your movie and music soundtracks by restoring compressed music sound, actively configuring the receiver's dynamic range, and increasing dialog level.

    • Compressed Music Enhancer: When music is encoded into a digitally compressed format like MP3, the frequency response suffers. The Yamaha Compressed Music Enhancer employs sophisticated digital signal processing using exclusive algorithms to restore what was lost, so the music always sounds the way it should.
    • Adaptive DRC: Adaptive DRC automatically adjusts the dynamic range of the sound according to the volume level. This ensures that you hear clear dialog, vocals, and all sound effects at comfortable levels. There is no need to adjust the volume level as you listen; everything from whispers to big explosions will be heard clearly and comfortably at the same volume setting. It also tones down loud TV commercials and is ideal for low-volume, late-night listening when you do not want to disturb others.
    • Dialogue Level & Lift: Dialogue Level Adjustment lets you control the volume of the vocal sound, so you hear movie dialog and music vocals at the ideal level for clear, comfortable listening. Dialogue Lift adjust the perceived height of dialogue sounds. If the dialogue sounds as if it in coming from below the TV screen, you can raise its perceived height by increasing this setting.

Bass Management: The Yamaha RX-V6A AV receiver provides the following Bass Management settings.

    • Bass & Treble: You can adjust the balance of the high-frequency range (Treble) and low-frequency range (Bass) of sounds output from the receiver' front left and right speakers to obtain a desired tone. You can independently adjust the bass (50Hz) and treble (20kHz) from -6dB to +6dB in 0.5 dB increments. The tone control of the speakers or headphones can be set separately.
    • Extra Bass: You can select whether to play front channel low-frequencies through either the front speakers or the subwoofer, or through both the subwoofer and front speakers.
    • Subwoofer Trim: The Subwoofer Trim control enhances the low frequencies by avoiding overlap with the front speaker output. This will result in a cleaner, more focused sound stage while providing a seamless frequency response. When subwoofer frequency overlap occurs in conventional systems, the overall sound is "pushed" toward the subwoofer. Subwoofer Trim takes care of this by separating the low subwoofer frequencies cleanly, thus stabilizing the front stage while providing a well-balanced enhanced bass sound.

Volume Setup: The Yamaha RX-V6A allows you to customize the receiver's volume levels.

    • Volume Scale: You can choose to display the "Relative" volume scale (-80 to +16dB) or an "Absolute" volume scale (0 to 97).
    • Max Volume Adjustment: Use this feature to set the receiver's maximum volume level (the main Zone and Zone 2 can be set independently). This feature is useful to avoid turning the volume too loud by mistake. You can set the Max Volume from -30dB to +15dB in 5dB steps, or to +16.5dB (full volume range is -80dB to +16.5 dB).
    • Initial Volume Setting: Use this feature to set the volume level when the receiver's power is turned on (the main Zone and Zone 2 can be set independently). You can choose between Off (same as the volume when the unit was turned off), Mute, and -80dB to + 16.5dB in increments of 0.5dB.
    • Volume Trim: Use this feature to adjust the volume level of each input. This is useful to balance the level of each input to avoid sudden changes in volume when switching between input sources. The range is from -6dB to +6dB in 0.5dB increments.

Audio Outputs: The Yamaha RX-V6A AV receiver is fitted with binding-post speaker terminals, dual mono-sub/LFE outputs, a set of front pre-outs, and a front-panel headphone jack.

    • Speaker Terminals: The receiver has binding post terminals for all speaker outputs. The binding posts can accept bare wire, pin connectors, and single banana plugs. These terminals are spaced too far apart for dual banana plugs and a collar surrounding them prevents the use of spade connectors. You can select 8 ohms or 6 ohms in the menu depending on your speaker application. The amplifier supports 4- to 8-ohm Front speakers, and 6- to 8-ohm Center and Surround speakers.
    • Dual Sub Outputs: The Yamaha AV receiver includes dual LFE (mono-subwoofer) outputs for connecting up to two powered subs (parallel outputs; not discrete).
    • Front Pre-Outs: The set of stereo Front Pre-Outs let you connect an external power amplifier to power your front speakers.
    • Headphone Jack: The Yamaha RX-V6A is equipped with a front-panel 1/4" headphone jack for connecting a set of headphones, so you can listen to your music privately. Connecting a set of headphones automatically mutes the receiver's speaker outputs. Sound effects applied during playback can also be heard through the headphones.

Phono Input: The Yamaha RX-V6A AV receiver features a dedicated Phono (MM) input for connecting your turntable and listening to your vinyl records.

    Video Section

HDMI 2.1: The Yamaha RX-V6A AV receiver is outfitted with seven HDMI 2.1 inputs and one HDMI 2.1 output that support the latest HDMI standards; such as 4K and 8K Ultra-HD, HDCP 2.3, 4:4:4 color subsampling, HDR (High Dynamic Range), and Wide Color Gamut (BT.2020) for full support of today's video content from Ultra HD Blu-ray, online video services (like Amazon & Netflix), and future TV broadcast services.

    • 4K/120Hz (40Gbps) + 8K/60Hz (24Gbps): The RX-V6A's HDMI 1/2/3 inputs and HDMI output support up to 4K (3840x2160) video @ 120 frames per second and 40Gbps bandwidth, as well as 8K (7680x4320) @ 60 frames per second and 24Gbps bandwidth. 4K/120Hz enables ultra-fast motion UHD images to be crisp and razor sharp; allowing sports, action movies, high-performance gaming and VR to benefit significantly. 8K delivers a super-immersive viewing experience with 2x the horizontal and vertical resolution of 4K, and 4x as many pixels; and combined with 60Hz refresh rate enables smooth and sharp viewing of content with high-speed action. All of the receiver's HDMI inputs and output support 4K/60Hz, 1080p/i, 720p, and 480p/i video signals.
    • HDCP 2.3: All of the Yamaha RX-V6A receiver's HDMI jacks support HDCP 2.3, which fully complies with the latest copyright protection standard for 4K video transmission.
    • 4:4:4 Color Subsampling: The receiver also supports RGB, YCbCr 4:4:4, YCbCr 4:2:2, and YCbCr 4:2:0 color subsampling (@ 60Hz or 50Hz). With 4:4:4 color subsampling, luminance (brightness) and chroma (color) are sampled at the same rate; resulting in an RGB color palette as big as the video sampling rate for a video image with more colors, plus greater color accuracy and detail.
    • Wide Color Gamut (BT.2020): The BT.2020 color standard delivers a much wider color gamut and represents about 75% of the total visual color spectrum, while the current Rec. 709 color standard selected as the color space for HDTVs and early generation 4K Ultra HDTVs covers only 35% of the total visual color spectrum.

HDR (High Dynamic Range): The Yamaha RX-V6A support HDR (high dynamic range) Video - including HDR 10, Dolby Vision, and Hybrid Log-Gamma; plus HDR10+. HDR (High Dynamic Range Video) provides enhanced picture quality by simultaneously enabling greater detail for both the dark and bright parts of an image. HDR reproduces a greater dynamic range of luminosity or brightness levels, creating greater contrast. This increased contrast reveals the subtle nuances of the image, from detailed blacks and shadows to the brightest whites and colors, plus greater depth.

    • HDR 10: HDR 10 is an open standard and currently the most popular HDR format on the market. It uses static metadata at the start of a movie to tell the receiver and your TV that the video content is encoded using HDR.
    • HDR10+: HDR10+ greatly improves dynamic range (the ratio of light to dark) of video content on a scene-by-scene (or even frame-by-frame) basis. Also, using frame-by-frame metadata, it improves the scene characteristics between bright and dark so that important detail can remain. This enables displays to reproduce images more realistically, adhering to the creator's intent.
    • Hybrid-Log Gamma: HLG (Hybrid-Log Gamma) is primarily designed for live video feed and over-the-air broadcasts. It uses no pre-encoded metadata and is backwards compatible with SDR. HLG's native compatibility allows much of today's existing SDR infrastructure to be re-used for HDR in the future.
    • Dolby Vision: Unlike HDR 10 which contains static metadata and HLG which uses no metadata, Dolby Vision uses dynamic metadata technology which sets individual color and brightness levels for each and every scene. Dolby works directly with filmmakers at major Hollywood studios to create superior HDR video masters of blockbuster movies.

HDMI Video Upscaling (up to 4K): The Yamaha AV receiver's video processor provides upscaling of 1080p HDMI video sources to 4K Ultra HD (3840x2160 pixels). The receiver does not offer analog-to-HDMI upconversion.

Enhanced Media & Gaming Features: Enhanced media and gaming features ensure an added level of smooth and seamless motion and transitions for gaming, movies and video. They include: Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM), which enables the ideal latency setting to automatically be set allowing for smooth, lag-free and uninterrupted viewing and interactivity; Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) reduces or eliminates lag, stutter and frame tearing for more fluid and detailed gameplay; Quick Media Switching (QMS) for movies and video eliminates the delay that can result in blank frames before content is displayed; and Quick Frame Transport (QFT), which reduces latency for smoother, no-lag gaming and real-time interactive virtual reality.

    • Variable Refresh Rate (VRR): Support for Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) allows the TV to adapt to certain Game console's frame rate. This helps to reduce or eliminate lag, stutter and frame tearing for more fluid and better detailed gameplay.
    • Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM): The receiver will enter ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode) when it detects a gaming signal from a compatible device (such as a Xbox One) and allows for a smooth, lag-free gaming experience. During ALLM, the receiver disables the i/p scaler and Auto Lip Sync function.
    • Quick Media Switching (QMS): This new HDMI feature called Quick Media Switching (QMS) allows a HDMI video source to instantly switch the resolution or frame rate to eliminate screen blackout.
    • Quick Frame Transport (QFT): Quick Frame Transport (QFT) transmits each frame at a higher rate to decrease "display latency", which is the amount of time between a frame being ready for transmission in the GPU and that frame being completely displayed. Enjoy reduced latency for smoother, tear-free entertainment experience.

Note: A future firmware update (no ETA) is required for Quick Media Switching (QMS) and Quick Frame Transport (QFT).

Other HDMI Features: The Yamaha RX-V6A AV receiver's HDMI connectivity also offers 3D video pass-through, Deep Color & x.v.Color support, as well as an auto LipSync function and Standby Through Mode.

    • 3D Ready: The Yamaha RX-V6A AV receiver supports 3D video pass-through (720p/1080p only) from connected 3D-compatible Blu-ray, games and broadcast devices to 3D-compatible HDTVs (all 3D components must be connected via HDMI). Special eyewear will be required for viewing 3D content.
    • Deep Color & x.v.Color Support: The AV receiver supports Deep Color and x.v.Color content, which can display a larger color range than standard-definition schemes. The result is a more lifelike, vibrant picture
    • LipSync: This function adjusts the delay between audio and video output. You can do this manually or have the receiver set the LipSync function automatically. When connected to a TV via HDMI the receiver automatically adjusts audio output timing (0-500ms) if the TV supports an automatic LipSync function. You can also manually delay the sound output up to 500ms to synchronize it with the video image.
    • Standby Through Mode: When the RX-V6A is in standby mode (power off), the Standby Through feature allows HDMI source signals to pass through the receiver to the TV. The HDMI input can be changed using the remote control. So, there's no need to turn on the AV receiver in order to switch HDMI sources.

Background Audio/Video: The Background Video feature allows you to watch a video source while listening to a different audio source. With the RX-V6A, you can select any HDMI video source input and listen to audio from any of the receiver's audio sources (including AM/FM tuner, Phono, USB, Network, or Bluetooth).

If an input isn't being used, you can hide it from the display so you don't have to scroll past it when you change sources.

Display Dimmer: You can set the brightness of the front-panel display from -4 to 0.

ECO Mode: When the ECO Mode is enabled, you can reduce the receiver' power consumption by keeping the maximum volume, maximum output power, and front display's brightness low. ECO mode reduces power consumption by approximately 20%.

Timers: The receiver offers a programmable Sleep Timer and Auto Power Down function. The receiver's Sleep Timer function can be set turn the unit automatically off after 30, 60, 90, or 120 minutes. If you don't operate the receiver or use the remote for an extended period of time, the unit will automatically go into standby mode (Auto Power Down function). The Auto Power Down feature is selectable from 2, 4, 8 or 12 hours. The unit can also be set to power down if it does not detect an input signal for 5 or 20 minutes.

Memory Guard: This feature is used to prevent accidental changes to the DSP program parameter values and other system settings.

Firmware Updates: New firmware will be released for the purpose of additional features or product improvements. Firmware updates can be downloaded from the Yamaha website. If this unit is connected to the Internet, the receiver will indicate when a new firmware version is available and you can download the firmware via the network connection. Firmware updates normally take approximately 20 minutes or longer. Check Yamaha's Support Download Site for the most recent firmware updates.

    Q
Am i seeing things or is a 9.2 channel receiver labeled as a 7? Can you run a 5.1 with 4 speakers in your zone 2? Also, does anyone know if you can associate each subwoofer output with a zone? For example, can I use subwoofer output 2 ONLY when I am using zone 2 and vice versa?
    chris  Apr 11, 2024
    1 answer
    A
The Yamaha RX-V6A is a 7.2 channel receiver, Chris. The RX-V6A has zone 2 speaker output terminals that can power an extra set of speakers, but the internal amp will switch playback from your Atmos or surround speakers in your main zone to zone 2 (providing 5-channel playback in your main zone) when the zone 2 speakers are in use. Subwoofer outputs are not assignable to zone 2, but you could use a subwoofer with speaker-level inputs for your zone 2 if you wanted a subwoofer in zone 2 only. The SVS SB-1000 below is fantastic for music use and features the speaker-level inputs! https://www.crutchfield.com/p_946SB1KPBA/SVS-SB-1000-Pro-Black-Ash.html

Has anyone been successful connecting Klipsch Heresy speakers to this receiver?
    leslie  Aug 28, 2023
    1 answer
    A
I see no reason why it would not sound great, Leslie. The Klipsch Heresy IV in the link below have a sensitivity of 99db (extremely efficient) and are rated for 100-watts RMS, all specs that will work well with the Yamaha. If you are building a home theater setup and want to use your Heresy's as your L and R mains with the Yamaha RX-V6A you can also have good success pairing almost any Klipsch center channel as well, so no worries there! The Yamaha RX-V6A offers two HiFi audio modes which bypass the receiver's tone & DSP processing for higher sound quality performance when listening to 2-channel music, a great feature to take advantage of the sound quality on your Klipsch speakers! https://www.crutchfield.com/p_700HRSY4OA/Klipsch-Heritage-Heresy-IV-Distressed-Oak.html

Perhaps we mean that your subwoofer only has one RCA input jack. You only need to use one of the two subwoofer output jacks from the receiver.

I am thinking about purchasing the RX-V6A. My speakers are 2 ea. Bose 301, 8 OHMS, 75 Watts and 2 ea. Bose 201 1V 8 OHMS, 10-120 Watts. I also have two outside speakers at 8 OHMS. Will this unit be an overkill for my speakers?

The RX-V6A would be well-suited for this application. It should pair nicely with your Bose speakers, and it has Zone 2 capability for your two outdoor speakers.

I want to use the usb port to play hi res files. My laptop only has ex-fat and ntsf for format options. What format do I use since fat 32 and fat 16 are old formats? My onkyo can read external drives but the yamaha can not.
    joseph  Jan 09, 2023

Those formats will be needed here for USB Hi-res file playback, and they are still the best choice! You have AIFF/FLAC/WAV (up to 192kHz/24-bit) file support through USB, Joseph. This Yamaha can even read a DSD (2.8/5.6/11.2 MHz) file through USB, crazy good stuff!

No need to worry here, Jon. The Yamaha AVR's that we carry that have Musiccast Wi-fi will have the updated 8k potential HDMI 2.1 capability. This unit has 3 120hz refresh rate capable ports specifically, so it's ready to go right out of the box! Personally I think this RX-V6A 7.2 channel can't be beat for the price.

can sonos one speaker work with yamaha rx-v6a?
    david  Jun 20, 2022
    1 answer
    A
Greetings David, and thank you for your question. Sonos is a closed system, for the most part. The Yamaha RX-V6A, has Music Cast, thats Yamahas closed up system. A Music Cast speaker will work with the receiver. There is an option to have the Yamaha and a Sonos One speaker be playing the same music. The Yamaha RX-V6A has a front channel RCA pre out. You would need to connect a Sonos Port (item 616PORT1BK) into those RCA outputs on the Yamaha, and the Yamaha will share what it plays out thru the Port, then wirelessly to a Sonos powered speaker, or a house full of Sonos speakers.

Can this receiver be set up to use powered rear channel Bluetooth speaker in a 7.1 mode?
    chester  May 29, 2022
    1 answer
    A
That's a popular question Chester! So sadly this cannot be configured to send only the surround channels through Bluetooth. If you want wireless rear surrounds with true surround decoding you'll have to use either the MusicCast 20 or the MusicCast 50 I've linked below. These lean on the Wi-Fi connection and would give you proper decoding for the surround channels. It's important to keep in mind these DO still need to be plugged in for AC power. https://www.crutchfield.com/p_022WX021B/Yamaha-MusicCast-20-WX-021-Black.html https://www.crutchfield.com/p_022WX051B/Yamaha-MusicCast-50-WX-051-Black.html

Enter an Yamaha Board Approved AV Receiver From the time we launched certain AV receivers in 2020 (RX-V4A, RX-V6A, RX-A2A, TSR-700), we indicated that we would support emerging HDMI 2.1 capabilities - including pass-through of 4K/120Hz or 8K/60B - in these models via future updates. Yamaha now has a HDMI hardware update exchange program available. Will You Need a Board Update? If you plan to connect Xbox Series X or NVIDIA RTX30 at 4K/120Hz or 8K/60B to your AV receiver (RX-V4A, RX-V6A, RX-A2A, TSR-700), you might benefit from a HDMI hardware update. You will not need this HDMI board update unless you are planning to connect an Xbox Series X or an NVIDIA RTX30 video graphic card device at 4K/120Hz or 8K/60B signal transmission. The HDMI board update keeps the specifications of your model's AV receiver the same - 4K/120AB, 8K/60B HDMI 2.1 (with firmware update) with up to 24Gbps on specified inputs will continue to be supported. Models manufactured later in 2021, are unaffected by the pass-through issue, requiring only a future firmware update to enable certain HDMI 2.1 capabilities. If You Choose to Participate Participating in this complimentary board exchange program requires you to send in your current AV receiver to a repair facility. Turnaround times are estimated at 8-10 business days (includes shipping times). Shipping materials are also available, if needed. If you desire the hardware update and want to check if your serial number is affected, please sign in using the form on this page. I bought the Yamaha RX-V6A 7.2 recently and I want to use the pre-outs to connect it to my Cambridge Azur 840A for more juice for my front DynAudio82s. My question is, should the front speakers be connected to the Cambridge Audio 840 or to the Yamaha YX-V6A speaker ports? The manual of the CA says that it should be connected to the Cambridge but there is no sound that comes out in the yamaha when i use it for my HT set up
    ickhoy  Jul 16, 2021

they should be connected to the Cambridge, make sure the the preouts from the Yamaha are connected to the Cambridge as well. one the preouts are connected from the Yamaha to the Cambridge and the speakers are connected to the Cambridge, you should have sound, if you still have no sound, go to the Yamaha manual to the connection section and setup section and make sure all the functions are set up correct. also there are plenty of youtube videos that show how to connect a avr to an amplifier correctly, check out Youthman, Techno Dad, tha villaman, etc.

this is subjective to one personal hearing preference and speaker likes. I have a Cerwin Vega e712 for my fronts and polk audios for the rest with an Outlaw Audio Subwoofer for my 20 X 15 and they sound great. so do your research on the speakers you like and match them up as best possible; and if possible, do a hearing test to see if you like the sound before you buy.

    dan  Feb 22, 2021

yes, the v6a can adequately supply the power these speakers need in a surround system, but to get the full potential of the speakers and the best sound it is always good to supply the speakers with an amp that can give the RMS watts of the speakers. the v6a is a more budget friendly system.

What are the measurements of the foot base? Distance between feet and how far the back feet resess under the unit. I'm worried it won't fit on my media shelf.

I've looked through all the information we have on it as well as the information provided on Yamaha's site but didn't find it listed there and recommend contacting Yamaha's support by calling 714-522-9105 to check if they can provide the distance between the feet

Can you listen to tv sound on zone 2 in another room?
    john  Nov 09, 2020
    1 answer
    A
You can in Party mode in which both zones play the same audio source. If the TV sound is a multi-channel audio, it is mixed down to 2 channels so it can be played in all zones.

how do i undo the memory lock feature on Yamaha RX-V6A?
    dan  Nov 02, 2020
    1 answer
    A
If you are referring to the lock that prevents accidental changes to the settings, then I found the path to follow in the menu to reach the setting to adjust on page 259 of the manual. The path is "Function" > "User Interface" > "Memory Guard" when in the setup menu.

    Q
I'd like to use this for a 7.0 configuration (passive: center, right front, left front, 2x atmos; and wireless musiccast surrounds). however I want to use 2 speakers for the center channel, meaning everything will be 8 ohms, but center will be either 4 or 16. Would this work? I see the manual denotes a switch for 4 ohms on front channels, but then would that negatively affect the other 8ohms speakers?
    alejandro  Oct 30, 2020
    1 answer
    A
setting the speakers up this way has a potential to damage the speakers the closer the volume gets to reference levels. it is always best to match ohms to ohms, from amp to speakers. of course if you always have the volume at low levels, than you are ok, but then you will never truly take advantage of what the sound system is capable of or why I am sure you purchased the system in the first place.

    Q
I am confused about the multi room feature. We are in the process of building a home that will have 7.1 surround in the media room then 2 speakers on the patio. Am I able to have 7.1 and the two other speakers working with this reciever? Or just 5.1 and the outdoor speakers?
    kyle  Oct 26, 2020
    2 answers
    A
the user manual states that the system is able to handle a 7.1 in one room with no other usage. if you would like to have another room(another zone), then you would sacrifice 2 channels of the 7.1 to power the other room. refer to users manual for details on proper hookup.
    jason  Mar 14, 2021
    A
Using the built in amplification you would be able to do 5.1 and the outdoor speakers.

Has anyone tried connecting a PS3 yet? So far I've been unable to get the RX-V6A to display the video. I've tried the HDMI mode 2, multiple cables, multiple output devices and reset the video settings on the PS3. Everything just results in a black screen.

I've had similar issues when switching between inputs. It is very frustrating but I have to cycle HDMI Mode from 2 to 1 back to 2 and then back to 1.... Mine doesn't seem to decode the signal and leaves the screen black

as long as the power rating of the speaker are not over or underpowered, and the ohms match, speakers will work with any avr, amp or receiver you connect them to.

    A
The Yamaha RX-V6A receiver is compatible with 6 to 8ohm speakers, and will deliver 100 watts of power per channel. In order to confirm that your existing speakers would be a good match with this receiver, we would need to gain a little more information on the speakers you are currently using. Please chat with us online or by phone at 1-800-324-9695.

I plan to buy a Yamaha RX-V6A (2020 model) this fall but I read that it needs a firmware patch to update the HDMI ports to the 2.1 standard. Will that patch come this winter? Also, How many HDMI ports will be patched to the 2.1 spec?

All of the HDMI are 2.1, and the firmware will update them to be 4K/120Hz and 8k/60Hz. As far as when the update is coming out, I do not know a specific timeframe unfortunately.
