Nobody should ever have to worry about a negligent driver slamming into them when they are out and about on foot. Unfortunately, a 51-year-old man from Penn Hills was killed last month in a hit-and-run incident. Today, we want to share an update on that story.

At Shenderovich, Shenderovich & Fishman, our knowledgeable and experienced team is ready to help you get the compensation you need as a Pittsburgh pedestrian crash attorney. We know that you need to focus on recovery, so let us get to work.

Charges Have Been Filed

We have learned that police have charged Surron Burch, 21, with homicide by vehicle, involuntary manslaughter, and other charges related to the death of the Penn Hills resident on April 28.

Police say that the man was walking home from work when he was struck on Hershey Road and dragged more than half a mile.

We are glad that someone is being brought to justice in this case. Police say that they gathered text message communications between the suspect and the car’s actual owner showing that Burch knew he had struck a person.

He knew that he hit a person and he never got out to help. He never reported the incident or called 911. This is just one example of what can happen to pedestrians in and around the roadway. Unfortunately, we know these incidents often happen when the pedestrian has the right of way. This can include:

  • Intersections
  • Crosswalks
  • Sidewalks
  • Parking lots

Many cases of pedestrian crashes involve children who are playing and are struck by a vehicle that is driving over the speed limit through neighborhoods.

Often, we find that the drivers who strike people are impaired by drugs or alcohol or distracted by their phones or other devices.

Pedestrian crash injuries are often severe and can include:

  • Broken and dislocated bones
  • Severe lacerations
  • Internal organ damage
  • Internal bleeding
  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Traumatic brain injuries

The treatment for these injuries can lead to major medical expenses. In many cases, victims will need to undergo extensive rehabilitation in order to make a full recovery.

Pedestrians have no protection from the force of a vehicle or a secondary impact on the ground. During the latest reporting year in Pennsylvania, there were 4,106 pedestrian crash injuries and 150 fatalities.
