X1 Debuts at No. 6 on Social 50 Chart

The newly formed K-pop group debuts despite not yet having any music to its name.

It hasn’t even released a single note of music, but newly formed K-pop group X1 is already making waves on the Billboard charts, debuting at No. 6 on the Social 50 tally dated Aug. 17.

The Social 50 is powered by data tracked by music analytics company Next Big Sound and ranks the most popular artists on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube and Wikipedia. The chart’s methodology blends weekly additions of friends/fans/followers with artist page views and engagement. The chart’s latest tracking week ended Aug. 8.

Some backstory: X1 formed via Produce X 101, a K-pop survival reality show that aired from May to July in South Korea. At the close of the series, the 11 remaining members (from an initial 101) became part of X1.

Many of X1’s tweets showed off concept photos for the group’s debut release, as well as behind-the-scenes videos from music video shoots, among other posts. Member Cho Seung-youn also celebrated his 23rd birthday on Aug. 5, gathering the group some extra social interaction.

Additionally, X1 added 61,000 new Twitter followers (up from 48,000 new followers the previous week) and 15,000 new Facebook post likes (up from 12,000).

X1 will not be music-less much longer. The group is set to release its debut EP, Emergency: Quantum Leap, on Aug. 27.
