Brazilian prosecutors have launched a legal effort to block President Bolsonaro’s son from becoming the country’s ambassador to the United States in what critics claim is a blatantly nepotistic appointment.

The public prosecutor’s office has applied for an injunction, asking a federal court to rule on the level of experience required to serve as a diplomat.

Eduardo Bolsonaro, 35, was nominated by his father last month. The congressman heads the lower house’s foreign affairs committee and regularly accompanies his father on trips abroad but has never been a diplomat. Brazil has a professional diplomatic corps and the appointment is subject to senate approval. “The appointment of a person without diplomatic experience could put into jeopardy national interests and information,” the prosecutors wrote in
