The alleged suicide of a third-year student of Amity Law School, Noida on August 10, led to protests at Amity University Tuesday, with the protesting students demanding the resignation of two law teachers for their alleged role in the incident.

Sushant was found hanging in his room at his residence in Sarojini Nagar last week. The incident came months after he got to know that he would not be allowed to take his sixth semester exams due to low attendance.

In a statement, Amity Law School said Sushant had 43 per cent attendance and this had been “conveyed to his parents many times through mail.” Since the institute is affiliated to the Guru Gobind Singh IP University, the statement said, “The attendance, as per the rules of IP University, was sent to IP, which has the sole discretion to issue admit cards… for sitting in examinations.” It added, “Amity Law School itself had absolutely no role”.

Sushant’s family maintained that no warning or notices were sent to them about his attendance. “The college used to send Sushant’s parents notices every time he was short of attendance, which was often. But this time, when they debarred him, they did not inform the family. And they did not even respond to Sushant’s SOS email, saying he would not be able to take it if he had to repeat a year. At least the college should have responded or informed the family then,” said Sushant’s uncle Dinesh Rohilla.

However, a copy of an e-mail sent by Sushant to college authorities on May 11 notes that the latter did send e-mails on this issue to his father. In the e-mail, Sushant said, “Sir, I plead you. Please help me. I have broken since I heard this, a mail if which was sent to my father who didn’t check the mail in a few days…(sic)”

The institute maintained that the “whole Amity fraternity” was “extremely sad at the loss of our dear student Sushant Rohilla” and had reached out to his parents.

But a group of students and alumni, who assembled outside Gate No. 1 of Amity University in Noida’s Sector 125 Tuesday, alleged that several students have faced harassment due to shortage of attendance. “Since August 1, no classes have been held, and students have refused to attend any classes in the absence of disciplinary action against the culprits. The students are demanding resignation of two teachers…,” said Keshav Dutta, a graduate from Amity Law School. He added, “A thorough police investigation is required, so that those who are guilty are punished…”
