  SAME LAUNCHES NEW PODCAST

PLW 2016

SAME has launched the new “Real TiME Podcast.” The podcast will feature an inside look at the work of SAME’s 30,000 members and 105 Posts contributing to the 2020 SAME Strategic Plan and to strengthening the engineering potential of the United States.

The first chat is with Col. Barry Totten, USA (Ret.), President of SAME’s newest Post, the Tennessee Valley Post based in Oak Ridge, Tenn. Totten discusses how he became involved in SAME, the origins of the new Tennessee Valley Post, and the local opportunities the Post and its members have to support national security and our nation’s infrastructure-related needs.

VIDEO STREAM ON ATLANTA POST CAMP

Federal Owners' Forum

On Oct. 20, at 3:00 p.m. EDT, the Exploring Engineering Academy, which is held at Georgia Tech each spring and hosted by the SAME Atlanta Post, will be featured in a live video launch from the Boy Scouts of America.
SAME Fellow Jack Seibert, one of the camp’s founders, will be featured in an interview that will air alongside the video launch. SAME and the Boy Scouts’ Learning for Life program signed a partnership earlier in 2016 to work together to help develop STEM opportunities for America’s youth. In 2016, the Atlanta Exploring Engineering Academy had 67 student campers, girls and boys, and they visited over 27 engineering sites, including the Delta Airline jet engine test center, Porsche simulators, and went “under” the Georgia Aquarium.

Be sure to watch the live video launch here!

Inaugural CEO Roundtable Held in September

RoundTable

At the Army-Navy Club in Washington, D.C., SAME hosted the first CEO Roundtable on Sept. 29. The event was designed to enable senior-level executives from government and industry an opportunity to address timely issues facing the A/E/C industry and help bring consensus on solutions needed. This first Roundtable included participants from the former Senior Executive Group as a means to bring some carryover from previous engagements and insight into how SAME’s industry-government engagement plan will provide value to the membership, the broader industry needs, and achieve the goals and objectives of the 2020 SAME Strategic Plan.

Moving forward, the intent of the industry-government engagement plan, Post Issues Workshops, and what will be an annually-held CEO Roundtable is to help inform and educate decision-makers and bring about awareness on key issues and challenges facing the military engineering community and the nation’s defense and economic infrastructure needs. SAME intends to develop solutions papers and informational documents as outcomes of the Roundtable.

Tulsa Post to Host First "Issues Workshop"

The SAME Tulsa Post, in concert with the USACE Tulsa District is planning to host an Issues Workshop on Oct. 18, 2016, on the topic of "extending the life of USACE infrastructure." The focus of the workshop will be an interactive discussion on extending the life of USACE’s aging infrastructure. Rather than just a series of PowerPoint® briefings, the workshop will be run as an interactive panel with several contributors from USACE and private industry.

True collaboration, focused on finding solutions, must begin at the local level where issues are seen first-hand. Post-level Issues Workshops are a key component of achieving the SAME industry-government engagement plan. They will be a valuable tool in SAME leading collaborative efforts to identify and resolve national security infrastructure-related challenges. Certain issues that merit national discussion with the Engineering Service Chiefs and industry leaders will be selected from workshops each year and presented at the SAME CEO Roundtable.

Posts are encouraged to organize and host Issues Workshops throughout the year. For more information, contact Kathy Off at koff@same.org, or 703-549-3800 Ext. 153.

SAME Member Album

Direct Mail

Did you get this in the mail? SAME has teamed with PCI (Harris Connect) to provide a printed comprehensive directory (member album) of Society members. The national office has received numerous requests over the years to provide a complete member directory; this partnership is the most effective way to offer such a product. We hope that you find the new directory of value and will make the decision to participate. Other organizations such as the Navy League and the Military Officers Association of America have utilized this service previously.

Participation in the member album is completely up to you. Should you wish to participate, contact PCI directly at 1-877-497-3505.

Proceeds above the guaranteed amount will be donated to the new SAME Foundation.

Virtual STEM Judging Opportunities

Direct Mail

SAME partners with the Technology Student Association (TSA) to provide judges for its STEM competitions. The SAME STEM Committee is looking for volunteers to judge the Verizon Innovative Learning App Challenge, a program of the Verizon Foundation in partnership with TSA.

The judging occurs in two phases. Judges from the TSA community will vet all the entries and a percentage of those will be judged to receive Best in State, Best in Region, and Best in Nation awards. Help is needed in the App Challenge judging process. All phases of the judging process will be handled online, via the Verizon Innovative App Challenge user database. For those who agree to help with the judging process, a judges' account will be set up and email instructions for accessing the account and user database will be sent by email. Detailed instructions and teleconference training will be provided to all judges. Judges should expect to spend two to four hours reviewing and scoring App Challenge submissions for each judging phase.

The judging process will conclude December 19th, 2016. For information about the Verizon App Challenge, contact Lynda Haitz, Verizon App Challenge Program Manager at lhaitz@tsaweb.org, or 703-860-9000.

SAME also partners with the Army Educational Outreach Program (AEOP) on STEM competitions. We are looking to provide judges for AEOP’s eCyber program, which challenges students to identify an engineering or related challenge in their community and develop a possible solution. This process is evaluated by the judges online in a virtual environment.

We are looking for Virtual Judges. Virtual Judging will take place between March 8 and March 24. We have big goals for this year, looking for 3,000 Virtual Judges. That's 1,000 more judges than last year. Click here to learn more and register today.

SAME members interested in this or other STEM judging opportunities also can contact STEM Committee Chair Scott Prosuch at sprosuch@earthlink.net.
