Corporate Wellness: Are you investing in your WELLth?

Corporate Wellness: Are you investing in your WELLth?

When many businesses, companies, and organizations think about their bottom line, it comes down to dollars and cents—their wealth! However, there is another kind of often forgotten about currency that is just as important called “WELLth”. This concept of WELLth came to me about a year and a half ago. Since then, I've seen it popping up in other places (such as magazines, books, articles, or speeches), and it will inevitably help to shape and improve corporate culture in the future. The reality is that this concept isn't new; it's been around for awhile, but the rebirthing of it is still in it's infancy. WELLth can have many facets and meanings depending on who you ask. One thing is for sure; WELLth impacts wealth!

Here's how I view WELLth as it pertains to companies, businesses, and organizations: WELLth = Well-being, Engagement, Listening, Love, teamwork, happiness. As you will see, each one of these factors not only builds on the next, but they are interdependent as well. So, let's now take a look at each one of them in more detail.

Well-being: Many companies, businesses, and organizations are starting to realize the importance of the well-being of their employees. This is a good trend considering over 85% of healthcare costs are currently going toward trying to manage or treat chronic preventable diseases. Does it really make sense to believe that a company or organization could be healthy and sustainable in the long-term if it's employees and/or volunteers are significantly ill? Can business owners and organizational leaders really believe that their employees can make good decisions, work synergistically, and stay motivated when they are not feeling well most of the time? Simply put: People can't, and often won't, perform well if they don't feel well (at least not in the long-run). Therefore, well-being not only matters; it just might actually be the 'Rosetta Stone' of true business success! This is being reflected in the continual rise of corporate wellness programs now being advocated and implemented. Yes, corporate culture is significantly embracing the need to be a wellness culture!
