14 Tips for Audience Members Different performances bring different audience and artist expectations. Monitors in the lobby and curtain speakers will share specific restrictions, but here are some general tips to help you and your fellow audience members enjoy the show. Be aware of the kind of show you are attending – a classical music performance, for example, is different from a rock or comedy show, and the etiquette norms may differ. Need help? Ask an usher or staff member for advice and check lobby monitors. Picture taking is generally not allowed, unless the curtain speaker or artist has indicated otherwise. Please set your phone to “silent” mode and do not text during the show.

We welcome children to most shows and know their behavior can sometimes be unpredictable. If your child/children are disruptive to other patrons, we may ask that you move to the lobby until they are ready to return to the quiet environment of the theater. Parents can enjoy the performance on the monitors in the lobby while outside the theater. We can make your experience better! If something is bothering you, please find an usher or House Manager for assistance.

While concessions are allowed in the theater, please enjoy them quietly and with respect for the performer(s) and your fellow audience members. Don’t forget! Bring back your Walton Arts Center cup to future performances for reduced price refills. Hearing and vision enhancement devices are available, free of charge, on a first-come, firstserved basis. Please let a House Manager or usher know if we can help you with any of the devices.

The carrying of weapons and/or firearms is prohibited at Walton Arts Center under Arkansas Code 5-73-306 even if you have a permit. Walton Arts Center is a tobacco-free facility. waltonartscenter.org

Oct. 3, 2019

Oct. 11, 2019

Classically trained at Cuba’s premier conservatories, the seven members of this three-time Grammy®-nominated Afro-Caribbean group are true modern heirs to the rich musical tradition of their native Cuba. The Miami-based Tiempo Libre is celebrated for its sophisticated performances of timba music – an irresistible, dance-inducing mix of jazz harmonies, contemporary sonorities and seductive Latin rhythms. “So hot and danceable that even when you talk about the group, you find yourself moving your hips” (Richmond Times-Dispatch). Featured on “The Tonight Show,” “Live from Lincoln Center” and “Dancing with the Stars,” Tiempo Libre is one of the hottest Latin bands performing today.

Representing a new generation of young African women singers who celebrate and preserve their culture, beauty and heritage through art, this all-female a cappella quintet from Zimbabwe has drawn international acclaim for its inventive arrangements that range from traditional Zimbabwean songs to Afro-Jazz to gospel. Nobuntu’s concerts are filled with pure voices and exhilarating rhythms, augmented only by minimalistic percussion, traditional instruments such as the mbira (thumb piano) and organic, authentic dance. The ensemble promotes the belief that music can be an important vehicle for change – one that transcends racial, tribal, religious, gender-based and socio-economic boundaries. Join us for a stunning performance full of sparkling energy and rich musical heritage.

The Nature of Forgetting

Ballet Memphis

Theatre Re’s The Nature of Forgetting

Ballet Memphis Contemporaryx3

Nov. 5, 2019

Feb. 6, 2020

At the intersection of art and science, The Nature of Forgetting bursts with creativity, joy and heartache. Collaborating with London neuroscientist Kate Jeffery, Theatre Re has created a moving articulation of the countless dimensions of memory and amnesia, linking science with real life experiences. Through movement of great physicality and compelling live music, The Nature of Forgetting tells the story of Tom – a middle aged father struggling in the early stages of dementia. The piece, and Tom’s memories, are a life-affirming journey into a weakened mind, where broken does not have to mean defeated. The Nature of Forgetting is a powerful, moving journey of shining humanity and a celebration of a life well lived.

For more than 30 years, Ballet Memphis has worked to build a company recognized for its close ties to the region’s rich musical and literary heritage through dance. Called “unorthodox, peculiar, fresh and large-spirited” by The New York Times, Ballet Memphis is known for fearless risk-taking and a deliberate diversity reflective of its origin. In this program, Ballet Memphis will perform three works: Matthew Neenan’s Water of the Flowery Mill, inspired by the émigré painter Arshile Gorky; Flyway, part of the 2014 Mississippi River Project series, which depicts, through choreographer Steven McMahon’s lens, the peculiarities and behaviors of birds during their twice-a-year migration; and Sa Voix, Julie Marie Niekrasz’s work inspired by how our culture looks at Romantic ballet today and in the future.

Piano Battle Jan. 30, 2020 The brainchild of internationally accomplished pianists Andreas Kern and Paul Cibis, Piano Battle places the two musicians headto-head on stage, charming and enchanting the audience with a variety of classical pieces by composers such as Chopin, Liszt and Debussy – and improvising tunes based on recommendations from the audience. But a competition wouldn’t be a competition without a winner, and here YOU will be the judge. All members of the audience are invited to vote on the pianists’ performances and will eventually crown the champion. Part serious classical recital, part tongue-in-cheek performance, Piano Battle has the elegance of classical music, the excitement of rock and the energy of hip-hop – and winning the audience’s heart is the only thing that counts!

David Sedaris Reduced Shakespeare Company

The Rocy Horror Picture Show

Reduced Shakespeare The Rocky Horror Picture Company’s The Complete Show Halloween Party Works of William Shakespeare Oct. 31, 2019 Ultra The annual Rocky (abridged)[revised] Suede Oct. 17, 2019

Get thee forthwith to witness with thine own eyes the wacky antics of three men in tights as they take on the seemingly impossible task of performing each of Shakespeare’s 37 plays in just 97 minutes. These theater classics undergo some changes, of course – Titus Andronicus becomes a cooking show, Othello is summarized in rap and Hamlet is pared down to under a minute. But you’re sure to be mightily entertained by the madcap goings-on, which include satire, sight gags, improvisation, audience participation and more! Perhaps even more miraculous, when the curtain finally does come down, you’ll have a general idea of the plot of every comedy, tragedy and history ever written by the Bard.

22

Walton Arts Center OnStage Fall/Winter 2019-20

Horror party kicks off with live music by Ultra Suede, so get ready to do the Time Warp again! For the main feature you’ll experience the hijinks of your favorite characters including Brad, Janet, Dr. Frank-N-Furter and all the party guests on the big screen in Baum Walker Hall. Join us in your best Rocky Horror themed costume, and sing along with this screamingly funny, sinfully twisted salute to sci-fi, horror, B-movies and rock music - the most popular cult classic of all time. You can BYOP* (Bring Your Own Props) or buy one of our prop bags at this interactive, unforgettable Halloween night out! *BYOP: Check our website for approved props list before the show!

David Sedaris Nov. 3, 2019 David Sedaris has charmed audiences with his neurotic and mundane, yet profound storytelling for more than 25 years. Beloved for his personal essays, short stories and National Public Radio segments, Sedaris’ material isn’t always what you would expect. His anecdotes are riddled with drug addiction, crazy jobs, his eccentric family and, in one case, a tumor he had removed and fed to a snapping turtle, but it’s his droll and conversational style that makes him one of the greatest humorists writing today. Sedaris’ live readings and audio stories have garnered him three Grammy® nominations for Best Spoken Word and Best Comedy Album – and while many writers have mixed feelings about going on tour, there’s no place Sedaris would rather be. Help us welcome back the always irreverent, yet deeply lovable, David Sedaris to LOL@WAC. Support provided by Shelley Simmons

Randy Rainbow

Randy Rainbow Live presented by Live Nation

Dec. 6, 2019 Randy Rainbow (yes, that’s his real name) is a comedian, actor, writer, host and satirist best known for his fresh take on politics and current events shared through viral comedy videos, political spoofs and song parodies. A long-time cabaret and theater performer, Rainbow’s musical tribute to the first 2016 presidential debate “BRAGGADOCIOUS!” exploded into public consciousness, with 28 million views in its first two days. In this special live performance, Randy will perform medleys of some of the songs that made him an internet sensation – most at the expense of the 45th POTUS – with video clips played in the background. Sharp as a tack, funny as ever and pulling no punches, Randy Rainbow provides the comic relief we all need as we try to digest American politics.

Tim Hawkins with special guest Dustin Nickerson presented by High Gear Promotions, LLC

Dec. 7, 2019 Since giving up his job as a grocery truck driver in 2002, Tim Hawkins has established himself as one of the most in-demand Christian comedians in the country. While his stand-up is riotous, fans are often more amazed at his singing voice and guitar chops. Tim’s viral music videos and songs – including The Chick-fil-A Song, Yoga Pants, Cletus Take the Reel and The Government Can – have earned him more than 300 million views on YouTube. The perils of marriage, homeschooling and growing up in the Midwest may not exemplify the rock star life, but they make for really good punchlines. This is wholesome, family friendly comedy that will have you laughing out loud and singing along!

Robert Earl Keen Countdown to Christmas with special guest Shinyribs

Dec. 17, 2019 From his humble beginnings on the Texas folk scene, Robert Earl Keen has blazed a peer-critic- and fan-lauded trail that’s earned him living-legend (not to mention pioneer) status in the Americana music world. After three decades, with well over a dozen records to his name and thousands of shows under his belt, there’s no denying that “the road goes on forever” for Robert Earl Keen. Here for a festive, larger-than-life and sometimes down-right naughty concert full of holly-jolly costumes and plenty of joyful tunes, Keen and his band will perform fan favorites from his much-loved Christmas album, including the song that many adoring fans know better than “Jingle Bells,” “Merry Christmas from the Family.” Support provided by Prudy & Dale Caudle

Arlo Guthrie

Jesse Cook

Jesse Cook Jan. 10, 2020 After 16 years of musical training, Jesse Cook’s ability as a performer came to widespread public attention when a cable television company played his recordings as piped in background music for the channel guide. Since then, Cook has traveled the globe looking for sounds that resonate with him. Known for his intoxicating fusion of world music, the Juno Award winner’s songs transport you – to Cairo, Brazil, Spain and beyond. He’s a flamenco master – a virtuoso with fingers that dance across his acoustic guitar. Delivering like no other musician in this field, the twists and turns of genres and mood swings articulate a wide range of emotions that make his performances an especially moving musical experience.

Arlo Guthrie – 20/20 Tour: Featuring Alice’s Restaurant Back By Popular Demand March 20, 2020 In 1965, Arlo Guthrie wrote a folk song about a series of incredulous events that began on Thanksgiving day. “Alice’s Restaurant Massacre” struck a chord with the anti-war counterculture, and by 1967, Guthrie had gone from playing small clubs to playing festivals and stadiums. Since then, he has come to be known to generations as a prolific songwriter, social commentator, master storyteller, actor, activist and iconic figure in folk music in his own right with a distinguished and varied career spanning over 50 years. Commemorating the 50th anniversary of Alice’s Restaurant – a movie based on his song in which he plays himself – Guthrie returns to Northwest Arkansas on a tour that sets the 18-minute monologue that brought him fame and fortune front and center.

April 23, 2020

Founded in 1974 by a group of ballet enthusiasts, The Trocks, as the dancers are affectionately known, are a company of critically acclaimed professional male dancers performing the full range of ballet and modern dance repertoire, but incorporating and exaggerating the foibles, accidents and underlying incongruities of serious dance. The fact that men dance all the parts – heavy bodies delicately balancing on toes as swans, romantic princesses or angst-ridden Victorian ladies – enhances, rather than mocks, the spirit of dance as an art form. The Trocks’ inspired blend of an impeccable comic approach, knowledge of dance and the astounding fact that men can, indeed, dance en pointe without falling flat on their faces makes for a Night Out that you won’t forget!

The vibrancy, emotion and heart-pounding beat of Hindi cinema comes to life on stage with Bollywood Boulevard! Dance, live music, storytelling and stunning visuals combine to create a non-stop journey through more than 100 years of Bollywood movies. Moving from the era of black and white films to today, the music, costumes, choreography and artwork reflect the essence of each time period. For lifelong fans, it’s a trip down memory lane. For novice fans, it’s an insightful and engaging introduction to the world’s largest film industry. Through hallmark songs and dance, the show celebrates the artistry, spirit and impact of a cultural phenomenon that has captured the hearts of billions around the world for generations.

Starrlight JazzClub Experience world-renowned jazz in the Starrlight Jazz Club! All shows are cabaret-style in Starr Theater

Freddy Cole Quartet Tribute to Nat “King” Cole Centennial Oct. 12, 2019 Like pop icon Tony Bennett, Freddy Cole is a beloved musician’s musician and a living link to the Great American Songbook. While there are certain unmistakable similarities in timbre to his brother Nat “King” Cole, Freddy’s voice is raspier, smokier, jazzier even. His phrasing, is far closer to that of Frank Sinatra or Billie Holiday than that of his brother, and his timing swings even more. His vocals – suave, elegant, formidable, sometimes spoken and articulate – make him one of the most respected lyrical storytellers in jazz. Cole’s career continues to ascend as he moves into the front ranks of America’s homegrown art form with a toe-tapping style, bluesy minimalism, uptown swagger and urbane sophistication all his own.

Catherine Russell Dec. 6, 2019 Catherine Catherine Russell is a native New Russell Yorker, born into musical royalty. Her father, the late Luis Russell, was Louis Armstrong’s musical director and her mother, Carline Ray, held advanced degrees from Juilliard and the Manhattan School of Music. Not surprisingly considering her pedigree, Catherine Russell is that rarest of entities – a genuine jazz and blues vocalist who can sing virtually anything. Her voice is full blown femininity incarnate; a dusky, stalwart and soulful instrument that radiates interpretive power yet remains touchingly vulnerable. Her repertoire features a selection of gems from the 1920’s through the present; vital interpretations, bursting with soul and humor. Catherine has performed and recorded with such bigname artists as David Bowie, Steely Dan, Levon Helm, Paul Simon, Rosanne Cash and many others, appearing on over 200 albums. Jason Marsalis Quartet Nov. 15, 2019 Jason Marsalis is the youngest member of New Orleans’ venerable first family of jazz, made up of his brothers – Wynton, Branford and Delfeayo – and their patriarch, Ellis. Jason began his musical career at age 6, when he began taking lessons from the legendary New Orleans drummer James Black. By high school, he was regularly performing alongside his father and brothers at gigs throughout the country, as well as studying orchestral percussion techniques. After graduating, his career quickly took off – he performed alongside virtuoso pianist Marcus Roberts, co-founded the Latin-Jazz group Los Hombres Calientes and learned to play the vibraphone. Each passing year, Jason Marsalis continues to grow and develop as both a composer and performer. With a fire in his heart and a passion for the music, his will to swing has never been more resolute. 34

Fred Hersch Trio Jan. 31, 2020 A select member of jazz’s piano pantheon, Fred Hersch is a pervasively influential creative force who has shaped music’s course for more than Fred Hersch Trio three decades as an improviser, composer, educator, bandleader, collaborator and recording artist. He has been proclaimed “the most arrestingly innovative pianist in jazz over the last decade” by Vanity Fair, “an elegant force of musical invention” by The L.A. Times and “a living legend” by The New Yorker. A fourteen-time Grammy® nominee, Hersch has regularly garnered jazz’s most prestigious awards and has long set the standard for expressive interpretation and creativity. The Fred Hersch Trio was voted the no. 2 Jazz Group in the 2018 DownBeat Critics Poll, recognizing its unique ability to traverse a wide range of styles and approaches while maintaining profound depths of emotion and an exhilarating spark of invention.

The Messenger Legacy Band Art Blakey Centennial March 20, 2020 Art Blakey was often called the father of hard bop. He was responsible for producing and developing more jazz talent than any other band leader during his more than six-decade career. Art Blakey’s band, The Jazz Messengers, was considered the quintessential forum for musicians who wished to hone their talent and leave their own mark on the jazz scene. Preserving, protecting and honoring the legacy of Art Blakey, The Messenger Legacy Band is an elite line-up of alumni members of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, each now a longtime leader on his own and considered among jazz’s most accomplished players – including Bobby Watson (alto sax), Essiet Essiet (bass), Geoff Keezer (piano), Brian Lynch (trumpet), Bill Pierce (tenor sax) and Ralph Peterson (drums).

Nace Brothers

Nace Brothers Acoustic Oct. 10, 2019 Led by brothers David and Jimmy, the Nace Brothers have been performing together for more than 37 years – and in that time they’ve become seasoned professionals, considered by most to be models of artistic integrity. As fourth generation performers, the brothers were raised on regional radio and television programs like “Hillbilly Jamboree” in the golden age of honkytonk – and you can hear that rich musical heritage in their unique blend of country, blues and roots rock. Their music exudes brilliant songwriting, expressive vocals, soaring guitar and a rock solid rhythm section. The history of roots rock is full of bands that have flared up brilliantly and promptly disappeared, but we can count on the Nace Brothers at the end of those weeks when we need some time with old friends and a few hours to clear our minds.

Martha Redbone

Martha Redbone Native Roots, Rhythm & Blues

An Acoustic Set with Amy Ray featuring Jeff Fielder & Kerry Brooks

Nov. 16, 2019

Jan. 16, 2020

Martha Redbone is one of today’s most vital voices in American Roots music. A multi award-winning musician, the charismatic songstress is celebrated for her tasty gumbo of the folk and mountain blues sounds of her childhood in the Appalachian hills of Kentucky mixed with the eclectic grit of her teenage years in pre-gentrified Brooklyn. With the power of her gospelsinging father’s voice and the determined spirit of her Cherokee/Shawnee/Choctaw mother, Redbone broadens all boundaries of Americana. Described by Billboard magazine as “the kind of woman who sets trends,” her songs are a brilliant collision of cultures, telling stories that bring to light an important piece of American history that has never been told.

One half of the Grammy Award®-winning folk duo Indigo Girls, Amy Ray takes the stage in this “solo” performance with band mates Jeff Fielder, the shape-shifting multi-instrumentalist on guitar, dobro, bass and mandolin; and Kerry Brooks on upright bass and mandolin. With the group’s intuitive chops serving as a foundation, Amy’s newest album Holler focuses on the American South. Amy’s knack for straddling the line between the personal and the political shines through, with songs about Southern identity, racism, poverty and the living history that hides all around us.

Two-time winner of the B.B. King Entertainer of the Year Award, winner of five Blues Music Awards and a Louisiana Music Hall of Fame inductee, Benoit also serves as the founding member of the “Wetland All-Stars,” a group of New Orleans natives – including the late Dr. John, George Porter Jr. and more – dedicated to forging a musical plea about the fragile eco-system that is the increasingly depleted wetlands surrounding their home. Glory Denied March 6-7, 2020

In Starr Theater

Based on the poignant true story of Colonel Jim Thompson, Vietnam veteran and America’s longest-held prisoner of war, this moving chamber opera explores the Thompson family’s personal struggles that play out on a national stage – from the jungles of Vietnam to the social upheaval of the ‘60s in America.
