Walton Arts Center Foundation Last season, volunteers at Walton Arts Center helped more than 23,600 students and educators as they attended a Colgate Classroom Series performance. In total, these volunteers worked nearly 500 shows last season. For any one performance in Baum Walker Hall it takes at least 39 volunteers to make theater magic happen! 14 Tips for Audience Members Different performances bring different audience and artist expectations. Monitors in the lobby and curtain speakers will share specific restrictions, but here are some general tips to help you and your fellow audience members enjoy the show. Be aware of the kind of show you are attending – a classical music performance, for example, is different from a rock or comedy show, and the etiquette norms may differ. Need help? Ask an usher or staff member for advice and check lobby monitors. Picture taking is generally not allowed, unless the curtain speaker or artist has indicated otherwise. Please set your phone to “silent” mode and do not text during the show.
We welcome children to most shows and know their behavior can sometimes be unpredictable. If your child/children are disruptive to other patrons, we may ask that you move to the lobby until they are ready to return to the quiet environment of the theater. Parents can enjoy the performance on the monitors in the lobby while outside the theater. We can make your experience better! If something is bothering you, please find an usher or House Manager for assistance.
While concessions are allowed in the theater, please enjoy them quietly and with respect for the performer(s) and your fellow audience members. Don’t forget! Bring back your Walton Arts Center cup to future performances for reduced price refills. Hearing and vision enhancement devices are available, free of charge, on a first-come, firstserved basis. Please let a House Manager or usher know if we can help you with any of the devices.

Classically trained at Cuba’s premier conservatories, the seven members of this three-time Grammy®-nominated Afro-Caribbean group are true modern heirs to the rich musical tradition of their native Cuba. The Miami-based Tiempo Libre is celebrated for its sophisticated performances of timba music – an irresistible, dance-inducing mix of jazz harmonies, contemporary sonorities and seductive Latin rhythms. “So hot and danceable that even when you talk about the group, you find yourself moving your hips” (Richmond Times-Dispatch). At the intersection of art and science, The Nature of Forgetting bursts with creativity, joy and heartache. Collaborating with London neuroscientist Kate Jeffery, Theatre Re has created a moving articulation of the countless dimensions of memory and amnesia, linking science with real life experiences. Through movement of great physicality and compelling live music, The Nature of Forgetting tells the story of Tom – a middle aged father struggling in the early stages of dementia. The piece, and Tom’s memories, are a life-affirming journey into a weakened mind, where broken does not have to mean defeated. The Nature of Forgetting is a powerful, moving journey of shining humanity and a celebration of a life well lived.
For more than 30 years, Ballet Memphis has worked to build a company recognized for its close ties to the region’s rich musical and literary heritage through dance. Called “unorthodox, peculiar, fresh and large-spirited” by The New York Times, Ballet Memphis is known for fearless risk-taking and a deliberate diversity reflective of its origin. In this program, Ballet Memphis will perform three works: Matthew Neenan’s Water of the Flowery Mill, inspired by the émigré painter Arshile Gorky; Flyway, part of the 2014 Mississippi River Project series, which depicts, through choreographer Steven McMahon’s lens, the peculiarities and behaviors of birds during their twice-a-year migration; and Sa Voix, Julie Marie Niekrasz’s work inspired by how our culture looks at Romantic ballet today and in the future.
Piano Battle Jan. 30, 2020 The brainchild of internationally accomplished pianists Andreas Kern and Paul Cibis, Piano Battle places the two musicians headto-head on stage, charming and enchanting the audience with a variety of classical pieces by composers such as Chopin, Liszt and Debussy – and improvising tunes based on recommendations from the audience. But a competition wouldn’t be a competition without a winner, and here YOU will be the judge. All members of the audience are invited to vote on the pianists’ performances and will eventually crown the champion. Part serious classical recital, part tongue-in-cheek performance, Piano Battle has the elegance of classical music, the excitement of rock and the energy of hip-hop – and winning the audience’s heart is the only thing that counts!

Since then, he has come to be known to generations as a prolific songwriter, social commentator, master storyteller, actor, activist and iconic figure in folk music in his own right with a distinguished and varied career spanning over 50 years. Commemorating the 50th anniversary of Alice’s Restaurant – a movie based on his song in which he plays himself – Guthrie returns to Northwest Arkansas on a tour that sets the 18-minute monologue that brought him fame and fortune front and center.

Freddy Cole Quartet Tribute to Nat “King” Cole Centennial Oct. 12, 2019 Like pop icon Tony Bennett, Freddy Cole is a beloved musician’s musician and a living link to the Great American Songbook. While there are certain unmistakable similarities in timbre to his brother Nat “King” Cole, Freddy’s voice is raspier, smokier, jazzier even. His phrasing, is far closer to that of Frank Sinatra or Billie Holiday than that of his brother, and his timing swings even more. His vocals – suave, elegant, formidable, sometimes spoken and articulate – make him one of the most respected lyrical storytellers in jazz. Cole’s career continues to ascend as he moves into the front ranks of America’s homegrown art form with a toe-tapping style, bluesy minimalism, uptown swagger and urbane sophistication all his own.

Catherine Russell Dec. 6, 2019 Catherine Catherine Russell is a native New Russell Yorker, born into musical royalty. Her father, the late Luis Russell, was Louis Armstrong’s musical director and her mother, Carline Ray, held advanced degrees from Juilliard and the Manhattan School of Music. Not surprisingly considering her pedigree, Catherine Russell is that rarest of entities – a genuine jazz and blues vocalist who can sing virtually anything. Her voice is full blown femininity incarnate; a dusky, stalwart and soulful instrument that radiates interpretive power yet remains touchingly vulnerable. Her repertoire features a selection of gems from the 1920’s through the present; vital interpretations, bursting with soul and humor. Catherine has performed and recorded with such bigname artists as David Bowie, Steely Dan, Levon Helm, Paul Simon, Rosanne Cash and many others, appearing on over 200 albums. Jason Marsalis Quartet Nov. 15, 2019 Jason Marsalis is the youngest member of New Orleans’ venerable first family of jazz, made up of his brothers – Wynton, Branford and Delfeayo – and their patriarch, Ellis. Jason began his musical career at age 6, when he began taking lessons from the legendary New Orleans drummer James Black. By high school, he was regularly performing alongside his father and brothers at gigs throughout the country, as well as studying orchestral percussion techniques. After graduating, his career quickly took off – he performed alongside virtuoso pianist Marcus Roberts, co-founded the Latin-Jazz group Los Hombres Calientes and learned to play the vibraphone. Each passing year, Jason Marsalis continues to grow and develop as both a composer and performer. Nace Brothers Acoustic Oct. 10, 2019 Led by brothers David and Jimmy, the Nace Brothers have been performing together for more than 37 years – and in that time they’ve become seasoned professionals, considered by most to be models of artistic integrity. As fourth generation performers, the brothers were raised on regional radio and television programs like “Hillbilly Jamboree” in the golden age of honkytonk – and you can hear that rich musical heritage in their unique blend of country, blues and roots rock. Their music exudes brilliant songwriting, expressive vocals, soaring guitar and a rock solid rhythm section. The history of roots rock is full of bands that have flared up brilliantly and promptly disappeared, but we can count on the Nace Brothers at the end of those weeks when we need some time with old friends and a few hours to clear our minds.

With the power of her gospelsinging father’s voice and the determined spirit of her Cherokee/Shawnee/Choctaw mother, Redbone broadens all boundaries of Americana. Described by Billboard magazine as “the kind of woman who sets trends,” her songs are a brilliant collision of cultures, telling stories that bring to light an important piece of American history that has never been told.
One half of the Grammy Award®-winning folk duo Indigo Girls, Amy Ray takes the stage in this “solo” performance with band mates Jeff Fielder, the shape-shifting multi-instrumentalist on guitar, dobro, bass and mandolin; and Kerry Brooks on upright bass and mandolin. With the group’s intuitive chops serving as a foundation, Amy’s newest album Holler focuses on the American South. Amy’s knack for straddling the line between the personal and the political shines through, with songs about Southern identity, racism, poverty and the living history that hides all around us.

Two-time winner of the B.B. King Entertainer of the Year Award, winner of five Blues Music Awards and a Louisiana Music Hall of Fame inductee, Benoit also serves as the founding member of the “Wetland All-Stars,” a group of New Orleans natives – including the late Dr. John, George Porter Jr. and more – dedicated to forging a musical plea about the fragile eco-system that is the increasingly depleted wetlands surrounding their home. Tab Benoit is a pioneer of the sound and style indigenous to Louisiana’s wetlands, and every performance is filled with a passion for that purpose.

Based on the poignant true story of Colonel Jim Thompson, Vietnam veteran and America’s longest-held prisoner of war, this moving chamber opera explores the Thompson family’s personal struggles that play out on a national stage – from the jungles of Vietnam to the social upheaval of the ‘60s in America. This performance stars up-and-coming operatic talent from around the country and is accompanied by the Opera Fayetteville orchestra, conducted by Cris Frisco.
