Venture Leaders Life Sciences 2018 – Meet Adriano Garonna of EBA-Med

Today, 10 Swiss based Life Sciences startups are flying to Boston for a fully packed one-week roadshow for 17th edition of Venture Leaders Life Sciences. Before they embark for this incredible journey, we discussed with Adriano Garonna, co-founder of EBA-Med about his expectations of the trip.
Who are you and what is EBA-Med?
I am a physicist with 10 years of experience in protontherapy technology in public and private research institutes (CERN, TERA Foundation) as well as clinical centers (PSI, EBG MedAustron Gmbh). I am the co-founder of EBA-Med, a startup that develops and commercializes a medical device for the fully non-invasive treatment of heart arrhythmias.
Why did you choose Boston as your business development destination?
As a global hub for Life Sciences initiatives and the site of a prestigious protontherapy center, Boston is a perfect destination to better quantify potential for growth in the USA.
What do you hope to achieve from the trip?
I expect to engage with local key investment experts in the medical device industry, entrepreneurship, healthcare and protontherapy.
Why is the Venture Leaders Life Sciences experience beneficial for your company?
Venture Leaders provides a great connection tool for new contacts and reinforces visibility and credibility, both of which are crucial in the life of an early-stage startup.
What is pushing you towards international expansion?
Heart arrhythmias are a global burden and the still limited (but fast growing) availability of proton therapy centres push our startup to have a strong international focus.
What do you foresee as the largest hurdles towards expansion into the Boston area?
The regulatory process for the approval of this new type of treatment will be a major hurdle towards expansion in the USA.
What makes you most nervous or excited about the trip?
I very much look forward to the trip, to meet fellow entrepreneurs of Swiss startups and to learn from key experts in Boston.
