Lions Ledger: Volleyball and Men's Soccer host Eckerd to begin the week

  • Saint Leo men's golf travels to the Country Club of Petersburg to host the 2019 Griffin Invitational after ranking up in the Bushnell Golfweek Coaches Poll after taking fourth out of 17 teams at the season opener, Cougar Invitational.
  • The Lions saw newcomer Kevin Johnson lead the way with a fourth place finish overall after shooting a 209 (-4) where the Green and Gold turned in an even-par 852 for the three round tournament. nilo Sanchez was second on the team with a 17th place finish at even-par 213.
  • The Green and Gold look to repeat as the tournament champions after overcoming a deficit in 2018 to win at TPC Tampa Bay at 885 (+33). Alberto Castagnara led the team with a third place finish.

  • About Griffin Clark (1995-2016) --- On July 4th, 2016, Griffin Clark passed away in a car accident just miles away from his home in Virginia. He was 21-years-old and at what seemed to be the peak of his life, only to have it cut short. Clark was a redshirt sophomore on the men's golf team where he helped the Lions win the first ever-national championship by a team in school history in Denver, Colo., accomplishing his stated career goal of winning a national champion. Clark's winning matchup against Chico State's Kelley Sullivan sealed the victory for the Green and Gold, handing the team and University its first national title in any sport.
  • Saint Leo women's golf returns to the links after two weeks off following a third place finish at the opnening UIndy Invitational in Carmel, Ind. The Lions finished at 896 (+32) after leading the first two rounds.
  • Synne Lauritzen paced the Lions with an 8th place ifnish at three-over 219, where she was followed by Francesca Santoni who shot an 225 (+9) in her debut tournament.
  • The Lions look to make their Bubba Burger Jacksonville Classic debut in the tournaments 12th edition. Saint Leo looks to compete with Nova Southeastern, the 2018 tournament champion.

  • Saint Leo begins a three-match home stretch Tuesday night as the Lions host Eckerd at 7 p.m.
  • The Lions suffered their first Sunshine State Conference loss of the season this past weekend on the road at 25th-ranked Barry in a four-set affair.
  • Saint Leo has won five-straight against the Tritons dating back to the 2016 season. Junior Ashley Quero led the way last season at home against Eckerd as she posted a team-high 14 kills in the 3-0 Saint Leo victory.
  • Senior Anilise Fitzi leads the 2019 team with 129 kills over the first 12 matches and also leads defensively with 49 blocks, 20 more than her nearest teammate.
  • Eckerd and Saint Leo enter Tuesday's match with the same 9-3 record but the Lions hold a 3-1 SSC mark while the Tritons sit at 2-2 in league play. The Lions and Tritons have played two similar opponents so far in 2019. The Lions defeated Tampa on the road 3-1 while the Tritons fell to the Spartans 3-0 on the road. Both teams hold wins over Florida Southern at home this season with Saint Leo winning in a sweep and Eckerd taking a 3-1 decision.
  • Sophomore Asya Harris leads the Tritons with 142 kills this season while Sarah Johnshoy and Rachel Wisian lead defensively with 38 and 37 blocks, respectively.
  • Saint Leo (4-3-1, 1-0 SSC) opened SSC play in the win column Saturday night at Palm Beach Atlantic (3-2). The high scoring matchup was led by the Lions' Kennedy Messina, Carolina Solis-Deleon, and Jelani Ashley with the ultimate game-winner in the 77th minute.
  • In goal, Julia Ortiz tallied five saves, raising her season count to 35 saves paired with a 1.14 goals allowed average.
  • On the season, Rebecca Anderson, Sydney Chase, and Carolina Solis-Deleon have each netted a pair of goals.
  • Eckerd (4-1-1, 0-1-1 SSC) suffered a 2-0 loss against Tampa on Wednesday. The Tritons took the bye weekend to prepare to host the Lions.
  • On the season, Lashanti Williams and Victoria Grant have scored two goals for the Tritons. In goal, Casey Winn has earned five starts in which she has compiled 24 saves alongside a 0.77 goals against average.
  • Last meeting on October 3, 2019, Eckerd handed Saint Leo a 3-2 double overtime loss at the Saint Leo Soccer Field.
  • Saint Leo (4-4, 1-1SSC) shocked No. 14 Palm Beach Atlantic on Saturday (2-1), extending the Lions' perfect home record to three.
  • Mauro Diaz struck first followed by Elias Niesigk's game-winner in the 36th minute. Christian Evans had a stellar performance in the net with seven saves.
  • On the season, Federico Toschi leads the Green and Gold offense with three goals and an assist. Niesigk also has seven points with a pair of goals and three assists.
  • Eckerd (5-2-1, 1-1-0 SSC) faced Francis Marion for 110 minutes in a 1-1 draw on Saturday at the Tritions' Johnson Field.
  • On the season, Agustin Pertusso holds the leading scorer title for the Tritons with six goals and an assist. He is followed by Blake Bauer with four goals.
  • In the net, David Ormiston has earned six starts putting up 18 saves while Dawson Lynden has earned two starts where he has tallied 12 stops.
  • Last meeting on October 3, 2019, Eckerd topped Saint Leo 4-2 in Saint Petersburg, Fla.
