After securing his first Grammy Award for best traditional R&B performance with “Redbone” at Sunday night’s (Jan. 28) ceremony, Donald Glover met the media to give some insight into his next project. The 34-year-old reiterated his plans to retire Childish Gambino after his upcoming fourth studio album, which is already in the works.
The Awaken, My Love! rapper initially threw fans off when he announced he would be partnering with RCA Records last week (Jan. 22). When his earlier retirement claims came into question after the Grammys, Glover laid the rumors to rest by confirming his plans to stop making music. “I stand by that,” Donald told the press, while showing off his new Grammy award. “I’m really appreciative of this. I’m making another project right now, but I like endings, I think they’re important to progress.”
The Atlanta creator continued to explain his appreciation of bringing even the greatest of projects to an end. “I think if a lot of things had death clauses in them, we wouldn’t have a lot of problems in the world, to be honest. I think ending are good because they force things to get better.”
Prior to his finale declaration, Childish Gambino took the Grammy stage to perform “Terrified” alongside Lion King co-star J.D. McCrary, who will play young Simba for the animated reboot in which Glover will play the main role of Simba. With the Grammy and Emmy-award winning creative juggling many endeavors, it seems Glover is at peace with his decision.
