ABERDEEN, S.D. — On a brisk fall morning the Augustana men's and women's cross country teams hit the course for the NSIC Championships. Both teams turned in second place finishes.
The Viking men came into the race having won the conference title nine years in a row, but fell short today as the University of Sioux Falls took home the team title with 32 points.
With their second place finish the men totaled 53 points. Finishing first for the men and seventh overall was
Jesus Urtusuastegui ina time of 24:36.0. The Vikings finished their top five runners all in the top 15.
Rounding out the men's scoring was
Aaron Runge (9th, 24:38.9),
Bonheur Mvuyekure (11th, 24:42.2),
Nathan Schroeder (12th, 24:43.2) and
Matt Steiger (14th, 24:43.5).
Each year the NSIC picks a student-athlete that is competing in their first NSIC competition for "newcomer of the year", and this year, freshman Mvuyekure was the recipient.
Leading the way for the Augustana women was
Mackenzie Kelly. She finished in eighth overall in a time of 21.42.2.
The women finished with
Nicolette Schmidt (10th, 21:50.3),
Emily Tromp (11th, 21:58.3),
Rebekah Rairdon (12th, 21:59.8) and
Courtney Hottovy (13th, 22:01.8) all finishing in the top 13 in the race.
Overall, the women totaled 54 points in their second place finish. U-Mary won their third straight team title with a team score of 16.
With the teams impressive showing in Aberdeen, 16 student-athletes were awarded All NSIC honors, between first and second team finishes.
The first team was comprised of four student-athletes:
Mackenzie Kelly,
Nicolette Schmidt,
Jesus Urtusuastegui and
Aaron Runge.
Making up the second team for the men were
Bonheur Mvuyekure,
Nathan Schroeder,
Matt Steiger,
Skylar DeJong and
Sean Heaton.
The members of the second team on the women's side were
Emily Tromp,
Rebekah Rairdon,
Courtney Hottovy,
Cait Savey,
Claire Boersma,
Leah Seivert and Haylee Watefall.
For the women, nine earned 1st or 2nd All NSIC Team honors today, the highest total by a women's program since the NSIC became a 10+ team league. The previous record was 7, set by Augustana in 2008 and 2011.
The Vikings return to action in Joplin, Mo. on Nov. 17 for the NCAA Regional meet.
