"Phantom Thread" An Economical Package On Blu-Ray

This week "Phantom Thread" arrived on Blu-Ray in the U.S. and Canada, and its tidy, economical package of extra features are appropriate for Paul Thomas Anderson's excellent film. 

On Blu-Ray "Phantom Thread", which won an Oscar last month for its stunning costume design, retains the grain seen in its 70MM theatrical presentation.  You can see the grain close up or from a reasonable distance in a home viewing.  The cinematography is accentuated by the Blu-Ray format, and it tailors Mr. Anderson's film well, adding a dream-like or ghostly quality -- no doubt what the director himself likely wanted to fit the themes of his film.

The high-definition 1.85:1 widescreen on Blu-Ray fills the screen -- there are no black bars on the top or bottom of the screen.  On the DVD disc that is included (as with the Blu-Ray disc) the previews of other films and coming attractions automatically play shortly after the disc is inserted into your player. 

On either disc the extras look great.  There is a comical food fight out-take among other scenes in the Camera Tests, which have optional audio commentary from Mr. Anderson.  About five minutes of deleted scenes ("For The Hungry Boy") are accompanied by Jonny Greenwood's music score.  Some scenes with Daniel Day-Lewis, including his character Reynolds Woodcock sitting in a church or walking through a cemetary (which are in the original theatrical trailer) are not included.  Nor is the trailer itself.

There are two other extras -- "House Of Woodcock", a three-minute fashion show of the women you see in the film modelling Reynolds's designs, and it is narrated by British entertainer Adam Buxton.  The other extra is "Behind The Scenes", an eleven-minute showcase of dozens of photos by Michael Bauman that also feature a demo of Mr. Greenwood's score for the film.  Aside from these, a customary digitial download option for the film is included.

"Phantom Thread" is a fine film, one of the very best of 2017.  The film is set in 1950s London and is about a fastidious fashion coutourist whose latest muse challenges him in what is a stunningly good power struggle.  The film stars Mr. Day-Lewis, Vicky Krieps, Lesley Manville and Brian Gleeson, among others.
