Councillor amendment passes Senate

With 52 votes the Senate approved two amendments to existing laws on Friday, Jan.11; they will the number of council seats to be increased.

These amendments passed the National Assembly last week.

The affected laws are the one regulating the administrative management of the capital, the provinces, the districts, and the municipalities; the other is the election law for the councils of the same.

The number of councillors in Phnom Penh must increase from 21 to 27, of councillors in each province from 15 to 27, and of district councillors from 11 to 21.

The upcoming third election for provincial and district council members is scheduled for May 26, and all 11,572 current commune councillors will vote.

In toto, there are 393 council seats for Phnom Penh and the 24 provinces, and 2,931 seats for all the districts.
