The first production pictures of Toby Jones and Richard Armitage in Uncle Vanya have been released.

The play, which opens at the Harold Pinter Theatre on January 23, also stars Ciarán Hinds, Rosalind Eleazar and Aimee Lou Wood (currently on screens in Netflix’s Sex Education).

Conor McPherson’s new adaptation of Chekhov’s drama is directed by Ian Rickson, and takes place in a crumbling country house at the turn of the 20th century.

Sonya (Wood), her uncle Vanya (Jones) and Doctor Astrov (Armitage) live a quiet and mundane life. When Professor Serebryakov and his new wife (Hinds and Eleazar) come to reclaim the house, repressed emotions won’t remain that way for long.

The cast is completed by Anna Calder-Marshall, Dearbhla Molloy and Peter Wight. It is designed by Rae Smith, with lighting by Bruno Poet, music by Stephen Warbeck and sound by Ian Dickinson.

Uncle Vanya marks a return to the stage for Armitage, who was last seen six years ago in Arthur Miller’s The Crucible.

Uncle Vanya runs until May 2 at the Harold Pinter Theatre.
