In Case You Missed It

SAME Teammates:

It's official: SAME is now 100! We have a lot to be excited about as we celebrate our Centennial, most of all the upcoming 2020 JETC in May in our nation's capital! Registration will open soon for JETC—our Centennial Kickoff Celebration—and a lot of very exciting activities and special events are being planned. You won't want to miss it.

Our Society plays a tremendous role in bringing people together to make a difference for our profession and our nation. A heightened level of engagement—energized by the Run to 2020 and Beyondis evident everywhere the National Leadership Team visits. In fact, it is through the contributions of all our members, partners, and stakeholders that SAME is poised to have an even greater impact in our second century.

We start this next century with a new strategic plan and a refined mission and vision. Read through the 2025 SAME Strategic Plan (unanimously approved by the Board of Direction in November) and digest the key member perspectives that accompany it. Through these messages, the depth of the strategic plan will come into focus, as will the direct relationship of our goals and objectives to the National Security Strategy.

Thanks to each of you for your continued service to SAME, our profession, and our nation. Our Society is now 100—but in many ways we are just getting started!

Deeds Not Words!

Joe Schroedel, Executive Director

Make your Transition Story a Success

Preparing servicemembers and veterans for the A/E/C industry is one of SAME's five strategic goals. A key objective of achieving the goal is providing opportunities for those transitioning out of uniform to meet with companies and agencies that are actively hiring.

The annual SAME Transition Workshop & Job Fair connects transitioning servicemembers and veterans with public and private sector organizations that are recruiting A/E/C professionals. The 2020 event will be held Feb. 27-28 at Embassy Suites by Hilton Baltimore - BWI Airport in Linthicum, Md.

Registration is FREE for SAME members who are transitioning out of uniform or not currently employed. There is a nominal fee for SAME members employed in the private sector and nonmembers.

Each company or agency that is recruiting will have a private suite for small gatherings as well as one-on-one discussions. Whether you are just starting your transition, have your separation date set, or are a civilian now looking for your next opportunity—you will benefit from a program developed specifically for individuals in your position.

  • The current job outlook for A/E/C positions
  • Resume and interview tips and strategies
  • Panelists sharing their recent transition experiences
  • Ample opportunities to network with attendees, career experts, and recruiters

Prepare for the Transition Workshop

Submit your resume in advance by going to your member account on the SAME website and uploading it under "documents." It will be forwarded to employers that are actively looking to fill positions specific to your skills and expertise.

Introducing the 2025 SAME Strategic Plan

With a new century comes a new strategic plan! Approved unanimously by the Board of Direction in November, the 2025 SAME Strategic Plan is now operational, effective Jan. 1, 2020. The development of the new strategic plan was a year-long process overseen by the Strategic Plan Task Force—which was led by Col. Sal Nodjomian, F.SAME, USAF (Ret.), and Col. Charlie Perham, F.SAME, USAF (Ret.)and contributed to by members, partners, and stakeholders at all levels of the Society.

The 2025 SAME Strategic Plan is an evolution of the 2020 SAME Strategic Plan, which set the Society's focus toward two main outcomes: lead collaboration and support national security. Our now newly refined mission and vision, and goals and objectives will drive even greater engagement throughout the organization.

The plan is lofty and deliberate. Leadership understands not every Post will be able to contribute to all aspects of the plan. But collectively—through Posts, Student Chapters, Communities of Interest, Academy of Fellows, SAME Foundation, and the other groups and components that are part of and connected to the Societywe will. And in doing so, we all will have a measurable impact on securing America's future, together.

  FROM THE HISTORY VAULT

From 1970: 50 Years of Our Society

While SAME is celebrating its 100th Anniversary this year, in 1970, the Society was commemorating 50 years of service to the nation.

Travel back to July-August 1970 and a retrospective in The Military Engineer by Lt. Gen. Raymond Wheeler, USA (Ret.), entitled "50 Years of Our Society," in which he ended by writing: "I conclude with the exhortation that our Society may continue for many years in the future to furnish the forum for the association of military and civilian engineers to gather in support of our national security."

May his words be so prescient again, today, as SAME starts its second century in 2020.
