Where to find free pie in North Texas on National Pie Day, Jan. 23

It’s not a national holiday. But shouldn’t it be?

On Thursday, Jan. 23, you’re invited — encouraged, even — to go get a slice of pie. It’s National Pie Day, and several restaurants in Dallas-Fort Worth are ready to celebrate.

Norma’s Cafe, a 64-year-old diner that has grown to five restaurants in Dallas-Fort Worth, is perhaps the most consistent celebrator of such a day, having handed out free pie for more than a decade. This year, all five Norma’s Cafes are handing out free slices of Mile-High Pie starting at 10 a.m. and while supplies last. Customers can choose coconut, chocolate, lemon, chocolate-peanut butter or Oreo. No purchase necessary.

In 2019, Norma's Cafe handed out more than 4,200 free slices of pie.

For the fifth year, Norma’s Cafe is partnering with the Birthday Party Project, a nonprofit that throws birthday parties for children in homeless shelters. Customers who visit Norma’s anytime in January are encouraged to donate gift cards or new toys to the Birthday Party Project. Customers can also choose to purchase a slice of Birthday Cake Pie for $4.99 a slice or $20 per pie anytime in the month of January, and 100% of the sale will go to the charity.

The original Norma’s Cafe is at 1123 W. Davis St., but all five Norma’s restaurants will be serving free pie. Find the other four locations here.

At Bread Winners Cafe & Bakery, customers who buy an entree at breakfast, lunch or dinner and get a free slice of pie on Thursday, Jan. 23. The shop has a large selection of baked goods, including more than a dozen house-made pies.

Buttermilk Sky Pie Shop is not giving away free pie — though samples are always free. The sixth shop in Dallas-Fort Worth just opened this week, at 6120 Camp Bowie Blvd. in Fort Worth. They plan to offer 10% off all pies on National Pie Day for those who ask.
