About This File

Need a moving map or PDF charts inside the cockpit that is also usable in VR? Maybe this is the plugin you're searching for.

AviTab is a tablet for your cockpit with full support for X-Plane's native VR mode and the normal 2D mode. The screenshots were taken in standalone mode to get a high resolution, but you can have the same window as a native plugin window in X-Plane!

Requires X-Plane 11.20+ (VR or 2D both work) on Windows, Linux or OS X

Tested and compatible with X-Plane 12!

AviTab is OpenSource: GitHub page

Features

  • PDF viewer
  • Airport info: See runway lengths, METAR info, ILS frequencies and more
  • Moving map that supports online maps and offline maps, you can even scan your own map image and calibrate it to use it as moving map
  • Navigraph integration: Link your Navigraph account and see the charts right in the cockpit
  • Aircraft integration: Some aircraft come with a 3D tablet model so that AviTab becomes a physical tablet

Installation

  • Extract the archive and move the folder into your X-Plane/Resources/Plugins directory
  • Start X-Plane
  • Find a new menu inside the plugins directory to toggle the tablet
  • Optionally, you can assign a key for this command (I prefer the right-hand lower trigger)

Usage

General

For VR users: When hovering over the edges of the tablet from a short distance, X-Plane will display green bars around the tablet. The upper bar can be used to grab the window and move it around inside the cockpit. The other bars can be used to resize the tablet.

Maps App

It is highly recommended to download some great maps from the sources linked in the manual to use as moving map: https://github.com/fpw/avitab/wiki/Map-App

Charts Viewer

The charts viewer displays PDF files inside the charts/ subdirectory of the plugin directoy. You can add your charts there, including subdirectories.

Limitations

  • PDFs containing CJK fonts or ancient fonts such Linear B are not supported. This is mainly due to font sizes - a version containing all fonts would be 40 Megabytes in size.

Donate

If you like AviTab and want to support its further development, you can donate.

Demo

This video shows AviTab in action at about 16 minutes. Thanks to @Basement Fly Guy for this!

Support

AviTab has its own support section on X-Plane.org. There is also a thread with tutorial videos that show how to install AviTab, how to use the Navigraph integration and more.

AviTab is one of the most useful plugin for X-Plane and absolutely must have for VFR pilots. The option to save charts and flight plans in .pdf format is very helpful for virtual pilots in VATSIM/IVAO. Straight integration in 3rd-party products is also great in my opinion. For example with Toliss A319/321 or Zlin 142 makes usage of these planes even greater.

The AviTab I use for my flights with the Zibo 738 mod and I can search for flight routes without using other external applications, but it only offers me one flight route. For this reason I continue using Vroute to find an alternative route.

AviTab seems slow when loading the PDF charts and moving maps when you zoom, the screen turns black for a few seconds. I hope that AviTab can be optimized in subsequent versions and make it faster to load the data on the screen.

Thank you very much for this great mod...……..

Amazing. 5 Stars.

Are there any plans to implement
a simple web browser? This would
be a game changer.

Great utility. However, it does not work for X-Plane 12 on my M1 MacBook Pro

Update: It turns out it does work on X-Plane 12. Click here

Hello,

thx for the great plugin, but the „moving map“ display no longer works properly (South Africa / Johannesburg, Perth / Australia) with Open Streetmap > XP11.50 Final with Vulkan.

Can you fix it?

Thank you very much

Best regards

Response from the author:

Hi,

OpenTopoMap was down for a few hours. I can't do anything about that as it's a free online service. But it should be back up now.

Excellent plugin, very useful in VR. I noticed pause/play buttons, can it play media files, too?

Response from the author:

Thanks! No, these controls can be used to control an external media player. They actually simulate pressing one of the media keys found on some keyboards. Not all players support that, though.

Apologies for the delayed reveiw but I have only now installed this little beauty after finding on my external HD and had forgotten about it, but I will no longer forget to use this app as it is an added bonus in my favourite plane VSL CTLS. Absolutely love it so much and thanks for the work and effort put into this masterpiece.

Bin using the Avitab mostly in the 407, and since today in the 412.
To be honest, I'm using Avitab a lot more then you would expect.
It's a great tool to use, especcially when you prefer to fly heli's.
No more switching on the map, being total in the way of your screen.
Just shift you eye (or view)  slightly left (for the 412) or slight right and down (for the 407) and you know were you are.

Again, probably the best tool/utility made for X-Plane.

This is a great plug-in to use for VFR flying on my single monitor set-up. Thank you. I have a couple of feature requests for your future consideration:

1. Make the 2D Avitab re-sizeable without having to resort to Windowed mode (I don't believe this is currently possible, but I may have missed something).

2. Include a web page display capability. Here in Thailand, and in many other locations I suspect, access to downloadable sectional charts is poor. As an alternative, it would be great to be able to view a SkyVector or equivalent routing map as a reference (I would not expect a moving map capability).

Meanwhile, I can thoroughly recommend AviTab as it stands.

AviTab is a must have and I recommend it whenever I can... it's especially great for VR users. MANY THANKS!!!!

I noticed this last version has an aircraft integration folder with a "sample" of how it's done. The code is a bit hard to understand, though I'm sure there are some that can just copy/paste the code and go... Any chance we can get some more detailed instructions on how we can integrate it into the tablet for our favorite aircraft?

Response from the author:

Hi Peter,

the 3D part of the cockpit integration was contributed by @nhadrian and as far as I understand, the sample is only usable for aircraft developers that know how X-Plane's 3D models work (I don't). It's not as easy as copying and pasting it and needs someone with 3D skills instead. The best option is asking the aircraft's developer or skilled 3D artists about this.

This is a wonderful little app. I haven't figured out how to integrate it into the cockpit yet, but is works great on my second monitor off to the side. I am using this with every flight and love it. Thanks for developing something like this for us non programmers. Really  Really  Nice!

PS. One thing that I figured out, at least with my setup when I run it on my extra monitor, the frame rates are basically cut in half. If I have about 60fps without it running when I turn it on and place it on my other monitor in windowed mode, the fps go down to about 30fps. Don't know why, but I have confirmed this after multiple tries. Guess it must just take a lot more processing power to run both at the same time.    I'm running an intel i7-8700k cpu, with a MSI Geforce 1080 8Gb Duke gpu.

It already was one amazing plugin and now when I just downloaded the latest version (v0.3.11) and witnessed the greatly improved performance when switching between charts, it's even better!

And thank you so much for categorizing the different Navigraph charts!!

In 2D this plugin is wonderful but once you get into VR it's extraordinarily useful and very very welcome. To be able to look at routes, approach plates and especially the moving map is a real game changer. The sense of immersion remains when using this in VR.  If I could give it six stars I would.

I love this one.

I missed the world-map with default X-Plane 11 on long flights. But also the possibilty to see where you are at on big airports.

AviTab not only provides it but has the opportunity to load open street view maps "on the fly". Verry nice feature.

And the Infos about airports with all frequencies are verry helpful, too.

You can easily enter your favorite navigation charts.

What can I say but thank you for this one!
