FLEMINGTON, N.J. - It's been 75 years since the Allied forces declared victory during World War II, but on Tuesday, Hunterdon County veteran John Paller received a standing ovation for his part in the war.

Paller, who lives in Raritan Township, flew 35 combat missions during WWII as part of the B-24 liberators, participating in strategic bombing campaigns against Germany in occupied France. For his work, he was awarded Knight in the National Order of the Legion of Honor, one of France's highest honors by Anne-Claire Legendre, the Consul General of France in New York City.

“For us, it's really important. It's a sign of the French American friendship and we want to recognize those veterans,” Legendre said.

The ceremony was held at the Historic Courthouse in Flemington, New Jersey. Paller said receiving the award is an honor, but he credits his success and survival in World War II to his crew, part of the Greatest Generation that's now remembered in spirit.

"They were great guys. Without them I probably wouldn't be here. Every member of the crew has a function…it's a wonderful day for me, I'll never forget it,” he said.
