It comes after the country was told to stay at home to stop the spread of the deadly Covid-19 bug - which has already killed 25 Scots.

Unveiling a new law about the lockdown, Nicola Strugeon said people who do not comply could be "liable to an on-the-spot fine and, ultimately, if necessary, prosecuted".

The First Minister stressed she hoped they will not have to be used, adding: "They are there to make sure we can ensure the right things are done to help us delay the spread of the virus."

But residents in her own MSP constituency ignored the emergency measures put in place - and could be among those to face police fines of up to £960.

A persistent cough is a key symptom of coronavirus.

And the women  - also ignoring social distancing measures of two metres apart - appeared determined to cause panic by spluttering loudly as people walked by them.

One furious local blasted: "They are clearly trying to intimidate people, and seem to find the whole pandemic funny.

"People are dying, and they're running about the streets when they should be staying at home like everyone else."

Shown footage of the incident, Police Scotland said they will take "robust action" against anyone threatening people in this way.

It's not the first shameful scene to emerge from Govanhill this week while Scotland battles to slow the spread of the deadly bug.

We told earlier how more than 20 people were pictured crowded closely together outside Fone Valley on Allison Street, Govanhill, yesterday afternoon - despite strict social distancing measures.

Social media users blasted the crowd for their "stupidity" and "blatant disregard" for public safety.

Scots caught flouting lockdown rules can now be fined up to £960 and police officers have been given the powers to 'remove people' off streets if necessary.

The new law, which officially came into force today, will allow cops to enforce restrictions on the movement of people outside their homes and to break up gatherings.

This includes the ability to remove people who are outside their home without a reasonable excuse.

Anyone ignoring the strict instructions to stay at home during the nationwide lockdown now faces fines of £30, rising to £60 if not paid within 28 days.

These penalties are doubled for each repeat offence up to a £960 cap, with no reduction for early payment.

Chief Superintendent David Duncan, Safer Communities Division, said: "These are difficult times, and we all need to look out for others, and do what we can to keep our communities as safe as possible.

"We've become aware of a number of incidents where people have suggested they are infected with coronavirus (COVID-19) and deliberately coughed, or threatened to cough, on elderly or vulnerable people. This is not a harmless prank - this is extremely upsetting to victims and cause fear and increased anxiety at an already stressful time.

"Police Scotland will not tolerate this kind of behaviour and we will take robust action against anyone threatening other people this way."

Nicola Sturgeon and Glasgow Central MP Alison Thewliss have been approached for comment.

Around 65,000 people in Scotland could already be infected with coronavirus and not know they're spreading it to others, our Chief Medical Officer has warned.

Dr Catherine Calderwood revealed the country's confirmed cases of 1,059 so far is a "very significant underestimate" of those actually infected.

We told you earlier how the number of coronavirus deaths in Scotland has risen by eight as confirmed cases rocketed by 165 - the biggest jump so far.

Nicola Sturgeon revealed the death toll north of the border now sits at 33 as positive cases broke the 1,000 barrier.

The First Minister confirmed the latest Covid-19 figures for Scotland in a Twitter livestream from the official Scottish Government account.
