RiVAA Summer Internship - Year 2

Another year, another RiVAA internship programme comes to a close.

This year we had Riya from Virginia in the US, spending a few weeks in the REC. Riya is the daughter of Saritha Bachali (ICSE 1992). As part of her internship she taught the REC primary school kids English and also singing and dancing.

Watch this space for her blog on her experience coming out soon!

Valley News

The RV Rural Health Centre maintains a blog that some of you may find interesting. As you know, the RHC provides primary level healthcare to families in and around the valley, thanks to Kartik and his team. The blog is a nice view into their world - people news, medical and equipment highlights, intern updates, and more.

Interesting alumni updates - documentary film maker Priya Krishnaswamy

Priya Krishnaswamy’s (ISC 1981) film Baaram (The Burden) is set in rural Tamil Nadu and is about the forced euthanasia of the infirm elderly by their own families in rural Tamil Nadu. It is based on a true story.

Baaram had its world premiere in the Indian Panorama section at IFFI, Goa, 2018, and was 1 of 2 Indian films nominated for the prestigious ICFT-UNESCO Gandhi Medal, an international competition at IFFI.

Fundraising updates

A big thank you to all those that responded to our last newsletter on fundraising requirements in RV. We have closed contributions for the ambulance and the rainwater harvesting projects.

Other updates:

Recently, we received a long awaited consignment of five high-end microscopes. Two of the microscopes can be attached with a high-resolution camera that can project the view seen through the microscope directly on a 43” LED television procured for this facility. One of the microscopes has a built-in phase-contrast facility that enhances certain features of microscopic living organisms. The second microscope is meant for viewing surface details of larger objects such as anthers with pollen attached to them or a lichen growing on the
bark of the tree.

The other microscopes are for students, especially grades 11 and 12. These can also can be attached to the same camera if students need to capture some of their work. We hope to exploit this opportunity with current batches of senior students and soon plan to start some work where they can start handling the microscopes.

Of the 5, one is meant for the Junior school science laboratory.

The microscopes are housed in a dedicated room that we are hoping to maintain relatively dust free and will be accessible for all teachers and students. We are working towards making this space open for learning and explorations.

Special thanks to Saumya and Srinivas (a.k.a Jimble) for their efforts in making this possible.
Other requirements:

1. Hoopoe House Fund - INR 30 Lakhs (of which 11,44,000 raised so far)
  • Started by the batch of ISC '95, in memory of their classmate Kadambari Badami Vamanan
  • To set up a ‘Rishi Valley Centre for Studies in Ecology’. This two-story structure will take the place of ‘Hoopoe House’, the home of the late Rangaswamy Sir who co-authored the book on birds of RV and started the Bird Studies Programme
2. Ongoing - REC and RHC
  • The Rural Education Centre's village schools and the Rural Health Centre need to raise about a crore (INR) annually to sustain. Alumni are welcome to contribute towards these.
Note: For any additional info and/or support on how to contribute to RV please do write to  aaoffice@rishivalley.org and we be happy to help you. Thank you.
