    MEMORY’S PRISONER

    CHAPTER ONE

The summer night was filled with a pleasant assault to his senses.

On the gentle breeze wafted tantalizing aromas of popcorn, cotton candy, hamburgers and fresh roasted sweet corn. Laughter and easy conversation mixed with the delighted shrieks of children as they spun faster on the Tilt-A-Whirl and the Zipper. A multitude of colored balloons adorned the tops of red and white striped tents while bright blue lights lit up the Ferris Wheel against the starry sky.

Turning his head from side to side as he walked, Mitchell Reid soaked in the myriad of sights, sounds and smells, an easy smile on his face at the happy, carefree atmosphere surrounding him. Nothing epitomized summer in Chicago more than the street fairs and carnivals that popped up in practically every neighborhood. Especially around Independence Day. And if your birthday happened to actually fall on the Fourth of July, well, it was as if the whole country was throwing you a party. Who could ask for anything better?

Mitch rolled his eyes and shook his head at the man standing by his side, the aforementioned birthday boy, watching as he stuffed a hot dog in his mouth as fast as humanly possible. You’re gonna choke, kid.

Joseph Anthony Valentino gave him a sideways look, swallowing down the last bite. "Are you ever gonna stop calling me that? I’m twenty-nine years-old now for crying out loud!"

Thirty-five year-old Mitch chuckled. He loved riling Joey up. As soon as you’re as old as me, kid.

Oooh, so…ancient then, eh? Joey answered with a smirk, then a laugh, stepping sideways to avoid getting a playful smack on the back of the head from Mitch.

But at six-foot-two, Mitch had a long reach and snagged Joey’s Cubs shirt, pulling the other man around in front of him, stopping them both in the midway as people flowed around them. He smiled down into blue eyes that matched his own, sparkling with amusement, sliding his hands up Joey’s arms, up the perpetually lightly tanned skin, eventually tangling his fingers in the dark, wavy hair. I’ll show you ancient, he growled, dipping his head down a few inches and capturing Joey’s lips with his own. He plundered Joey’s mouth with his tongue fast and hard, delighting in the groan he received in response. Joey pressed his body fully against Mitch, but Mitch broke the kiss and stepped back with a smug smile and a raised eyebrow, smoothing down his dark green t-shirt.

Joey looked thoughtful. Mmm, I take it back. You’ve still got it, he replied with a grin, then threw a parting shot over his shoulder as he turned and walked away. Old man.

Mitch ran a hand through his short, blond hair in amused exasperation, then jogged up to Joey, throwing an arm around the other man, pulling him close as they continued down the midway.

I need some ice cream, Joey announced, looking around for the nearest vendor.

Mitch gaped at him in disbelief. "You had cotton candy, popcorn, and a hot dog, all within the last hour. Don’t expect me to feel sorry for you later tonight when you’re hunched over the toilet."

"It’s my birthday, Joey replied, as if that gave his stomach a free pass. Ah! There’s one, he pointed, just beyond the row of carnival games. He snagged Mitch’s hand and tugged. C’mon!"

Mitch allowed himself to be led toward the ice cream vendor as carnies called out from each of the games, trying to entice people to spend their money and go home with a prize. Toss a ring on a bottle, break a balloon with a dart, knock down cans with a softball….

    Gentlemen! Step right up!

Joey and Mitch abruptly stopped walking as a particularly animated carnie jumped over the short wall of his booth to land in their path.

Gentlemen! he said again, throwing his arms up in the air. Care to try your luck? Test your skill? he asked, gesturing toward his game. He took notice of their clasped hands, looked at Mitch, gave him a wink and a nod toward Joey. Win your friend a prize?

Mitch shook his head. No thanks, we—

    A pony!

Mitch turned to look at Joey, watching as the young man suddenly turned into a young child, pointing at the giant stuffed animals hanging from the booth.

Joey bumped his shoulder against Mitch’s. "C’mon, Mitch! Win me a prize! It’s my birthday!"

Mitch looked Joey as if he’d lost his mind, wondering what had gotten into him, when he saw Joey’s eyes indicating he should look at the sign over the booth, at the type of game it was. Mitch did and he couldn’t stop the smile that crossed his face. He took out his wallet and pulled out a five dollar bill. Anything for the birthday boy, he answered with a wink.

    ~*~*~*~*~*~*~

Fifteen minutes later the two men left the carnival, heading home, one carrying a large stuffed animal, the other a half-eaten chocolate ice cream cone.

"I cannot believe you made me use my well-honed S.W.A.T. skills at an air rifle game to win you a pony!" Mitch shook his head, then popped the last of the sugar cone in his mouth.

Ah, those games are rigged and you know it. It’s about time someone cleaned them out! Joey laughed.

Why didn’t you give it to some child before we left? Mitch asked, wondering where Joey planned on putting the toy when they got home.

Are you joking? Look at this thing! Joey held it up before him in all its brown and white furry glory. It’s awesome!

And you wonder why I call you ‘kid’? Mitch teased. Let me guess, you always wanted a pony when you were a boy.

Joey hefted the toy up under his arm, then turned to walk backward in front of Mitch. Indeed I did. But now…. he trailed off, coming to a stop, voice dropping several octaves. "There are other things I’d rather ride," he finished suggestively, reaching around Mitch with his other hand to cup his ass, tugging Mitch against him.

Mitch watched as Joey’s eyes darkened in the twilight, knew they matched his own, then bowed his head as Joey stretched up to even out the three inches in height difference between them. This time Joey was the aggressor, pushing his groin against Mitch’s, squeezing his ass as he kissed Mitch forcefully. Now it was Mitch’s turn to groan. Damn that kid, he knew how Mitch got off on Joey taking charge.

And take charge he did, turning them both and backing Mitch up against the brick wall of the building next to the sidewalk they were standing on, never breaking the kiss. Mitch felt the rough edges of the brick scrape against his back, but the sensation of Joey grinding his hardening erection against his own quickly overrode the discomfort.

Joey was making it clear exactly what he wanted to ride, and Mitch was damn sure going to oblige him. Taking hold of Joey’s upper arms, Mitch pushed the other man back several inches. Before Joey could protest, Mitch grabbed his wrist and pulled them back onto the sidewalk. Home. Now, he growled, practically pulling Joey along behind him.

We’re not gonna go see the fireworks? Joey chuckled.

We’ll be making our own. Trust me. Mitch winked, then laughed as Joey’s eyebrows rose.

    ~*~*~*~*~*~*~

The door to Mitch’s third floor loft burst open and the two men stumbled through, pulling at one another’s clothes. Mitch kicked the door closed behind them as Joey let the stuffed horse fall to the floor. Forgoing the lights, letting the moon through the windows guide their way, they staggered over to the stairs and climbed up to the bedroom, tripping more than once as they refused to break their kiss. Their destination finally reached, they bumped into Mitch’s dresser at the top of the stairs, sending two gold detective’s badges tumbling to the floor, unnoticed.

Off…off, Joey panted, tugging impatiently at Mitch’s t-shirt as Mitch fumbled with Joey’s belt, both of them toeing off their shoes. Mitch relented and raised his arms, allowing Joey to remove the shirt and toss it away, groaning as Joey swiped his thumbs across both of Mitch’s nipples.

The rest of their clothing soon followed, strewn carelessly around the bedroom, their excitement growing as each layer was shed. Finally their hands and mouths roamed across bare skin, raising gooseflesh in their wake in anticipation of what was to come. Mitch let Joey take the lead, happy to let the birthday boy do whatever he wanted to him tonight. And God, he couldn’t wait.

Joey didn’t keep him in suspense, moving Mitch until the backs of his knees hit the bed and he sat down heavily, hands immediately rising up to grip Joey’s slim waist. Joey ran the fingers of one hand through Mitch’s short hair while the other took hold of his own erection, stroking loosely. Mitch swallowed deeply, knowing what Joey wanted. And he didn’t disappoint.

Suck me, Mitch… please, Joey breathed. Want it so bad...

Mitch leaned forward without hesitation, fingers tightening on Joey’s waist as he opened his mouth and took Joey inside. He couldn’t help the groan as he felt Joey’s cock resting against his tongue, hot and hard. He felt both of Joey’s hands on his head, cupping it, urging Mitch forward. Relaxing his jaw, Mitch took more of Joey in, until the head of Joey’s cock bumped the back of his throat.

God…yes… Joey moaned as Mitch pulled back, sucking hard, then forward again, setting up a rhythm sure to push Joey over the edge.

Oh fuck… Joey panted. Feels so good...

Mitch slid one hand from Joey’s waist to encircle the base of Joey’s cock, stroking and sucking at the same time. He immediately felt Joey’s erection swell even further right before he tasted a burst of salty precome on his tongue. Mitch groaned, feeling his own erection, hot and heavy between his legs, release several drops of clear fluid as well.

Wanting nothing more than for Joey to fall apart, Mitch moved his other hand from Joey’s hip to cup Joey’s heavy balls, rolling them in his hand, tugging gently. Joey jerked, breath catching in his throat, hips stuttering at the extra sensation and Mitch waited to swallow Joey’s release. But the other man surprised him by pulling back with a sharp groan, slipping from Mitch’s mouth.

Joey shook his head. Not yet. Want you in me when I come, he told Mitch, voice dropping. Wanna ride you.

Oh fuck, yes, Mitch answered, scooting fully up onto the bed, his cock throbbing at Joey’s words.

Joey crawled onto the bed next to Mitch, turning lust-filled eyes on him. Get me ready?

Mitch rolled to his right, pulling open the drawer in the bedside table, removing the tube of lube and a condom as Joey raised up on his knees and gripped the headboard, bent over just slightly, legs spread wide. Mitch sucked in a breath as he turned back, at the erotic sight of Joey presenting himself to him, wanting to be opened, to be filled.

Joey turned to look over his shoulder. Hurry, Mitch...

Needing no further encouragement, Mitch coated his fingers generously with lube, then surged up behind Joey, unable to resist the urge to slide his cock between Joey’s legs, brushing past his opening, pushing against Joey’s balls.

Joey pressed back against him with a moan. God, Mitch, don’t tease...

Mitch smiled at the needy sound of Joey’s voice and moved his hips back, the fingers of his right hand taking the place of his cock, circling Joey’s entrance just briefly before sliding his index finger in past the tight ring of muscle.

Yeah... Joey sighed deeply as his eyes slid closed.

Mitch leaned forward, dipping his head to trail hot kisses on the back of Joey’s neck and across his shoulders as he continued to move his finger in and out, adding a second one shortly and finally a third, until Joey’s breath came in short pants, his hips moving, trying to take Mitch’s fingers in even deeper.

    Now Mitch, c’mon...

Mitch nodded, withdrawing his fingers and Joey groaned at the
