NORWAY (WGME) – Two Norway men have gone viral after posting a video describing their conversation with a man who put up racist signs.
One week ago, Jason Gordon called Travis Verrill on the phone, saying he'd seen on social media where racist signs were posted in a window in town.
“I called Travis to see if he wanted to go over there,” Gordon said.
"Anytime for a sign like that is the wrong time, but right now with everything going on, it’s certainly the wrong time," Verrill said.
Travis says they talked with the person who made the signs for a while.
"I knew I wasn’t going to change his heart,” Verrill said. “I knew his ways of thinking weren’t going to be different when he woke up. I just wanted the signs down."
Verrill took down one of the signs, he says the guy who made the signs took down the other one.
After posting a video on Facebook describing their conversation, they were surprised when it quickly went viral, now with nearly 5 million views.
“If you honestly want to leave a better place for your children than what you came into, you got to get out here right now and do something about it,” Verrill said.
CBS 13 spoke to some people who are opposed to the video.
While they didn’t want to go on camera, they say that there are other ways to educate people about racism.
