The Burnett Mansion, at 320 S. Main Street, has been many things over the years, from the personal home of Bates Burnett to a restaurant, to the offices of a non-profit. And now it’s time to add another line to the list: private event space.

If you’ve ever wondered about what it would be like to rent out the historic mansion for a private party, now is your chance, and it may not be as expensive as you think.

But of course, that means reminding people that it’s not a restaurant any longer. The building used to house the popular Miss Scarlet’s Tea Room until it went up for sale. It seems not everyone knows that the ‘Tea Room’ has been closed for years.

“I still have people asking, ‘Are you open? Can we get a lunch menu?’” says property and event manager Timea Boros, who has taken over the managing of the venue since it was purchased by The Kante Group in 2019. The building has since become the home for the non-profit Make Sense Foundation, but Boros wants to get the word out that the mansion is available to book for private parties, including weddings, luncheons, showers, reunions—the list is endless.

The 6,500 square-foot home was built in 1911 by Bates Burnett and specifically designed to reflect the southern colonial-style plantation homes of his native Tennessee. No expense was spared as they imported mahogany from the Philippines and hired two artists from Italy who spent two years hand-painting the canvas walls and plaster ceilings with a different design in each room. The building includes the original windows, made from the finest stained and cut glass at the time. The home was built for entertaining, so it’s only fitting that it would be restored to that function for anyone who wants to do so.

The unique ambiance makes for an ideal experience for almost any private party. Weddings, luncheons, dinners, or showers of any kind can all utilize the full catering kitchen, and tables and chairs are available for free with each event. Additional items, like linens or centerpieces, can be had for an additional charge. You can rent the inside, the outside, only the first floor, or the entire house for as little as 2 hours or up to 12. Prices range from only $250 up to $2,500, depending on the day. Boros says that through the end of March, any event you book will be 25% off, even if you book far in advance. Events that are booked for April and May will have baskets of SeneGence products included as a gift.
