Kevin Sinfield has once more been overlooked for an accolade which most rugby league fans felt should have been his.
Just weeks after being snubbed by the BBC Sport’s Personality of the Year award, Sinfield was also omitted from the Queen’s New Year Honours List.
That is despite his incredible feats during 2021 which included raising over £4 million for Motor Neurone Disease research in two separate challenges.
First, Sinfield ran seven marathons in seven days and then the former Leeds Rhinos stalwart ran 101 miles in 24 hours – both to raise money for the fight of his friend Rob Burrow against MND.
Though there was perhaps an understandable reason for Sinfield not being nominated in the BBC’s SPOTY shortlist given that he is no longer an ‘active’ sportsman, fans were left fuming when he failed to be mentioned by the Queen ahead of the year 2022.
One woman remarked: “Woke up fully expecting Sir Kevin Sinfield. What has this man gotta do to get a knighthood #shameful“.

That sentiment was echoed amongst much of the rugby league fraternity, with another commenting: “I am absolutely staggered that Kevin Sinfield has gone unrecognised in the New Years Honours. He has inspired thousands, he has raised thousands and he’s been the best best mate anyone could ever imagine at a time of need. Staggering miss by the establishment.”

Another could not hide his respect for ‘Sir Kevin’ after what he went through in 2021: “In a sh*t year, one man showed selflessness, leadership, courage & inspired our nation. It’s a huge injustice that Kevin Sinfield has not been recognised in the honours list. Whilst not formally recognised, he has cemented himself as one of my all time heroes. #SirKevin“.
