Maine lobster industry loses sustainability certification over its effect on right whales

The Maine lobster industry has lost a sustainable seafood certification.

The Portland Press Herald reports a London-based nonprofit suspended the certification because the U.S. Gulf of Maine Fishery uses rope-heavy fishing methods That threaten the north Atlantic right whale.

starting in September, U.S. Gulf of Maine lobster can no longer use the nonprofit's eco-label, which has been embraced by high-volume buyers like Whole Foods and Walmart.
