What are the stakes for falling in love?

That’s the question tarot card reader Gillian Howe ponders when she hosts a supernatural speed dating event. Making the perfect match is her passion, too bad she can’t find one for herself. A chance encounter with a wealthy vampire provides her an opportunity to attend an exclusive after-party and prove she isn't opposed to love. But she finds herself plunged into a secret society of trancing, blood bonds and human escort rings. The night ends in a police raid and of all the vampire detectives in Raven’s Hollow, Garrett Mulroney shows up at the scene. Even if he is scorching, hot, he accused her of a crime she didn't commit and nearly ruined her life.

Fate has thrown them together again…

Garrett has been down this brutal road before and it didn’t end well. His sire tried to force him into a life of debauchery, but he chose to uphold the law instead. The fact that the one woman he can’t seem to get out of his mind or out of his lust-filled dreams is at the center of his investigation doesn’t bode well. It's a good thing she hates his guts because it helps douse his growing desire for her and focus on the case. But when Gillian’s cousin is kidnapped into the Du Sang Brotherhood, she becomes the prime witness. Now they’re forced to put their differences aside and go undercover by pretending to be a couple. The more time Garrett spends with Gillian, the more he wants her in his life—and in his bed.

Knowing who to trust and who to love becomes a matter of survival, and possibly the only way to take down the Brotherhood.

Solid 4.5 star
I just fell in love with Gillian she is so caring of those around her as well as strangers not sure how good of an idea that is!) yet also wary of her own feelings, while Garrett is all stiff and alpha along with deliciously vampire so they are the perfect match! I liked how neither wanted to acknowledge the attraction they have had brewing for the last few months and try dancing around it although Garrett was pretty smooth with wanting to keep watch of Gillian while they try and track down Brooke along with the bad guys. This has a great mix of laughs, attraction, suspense and twists and then the ending ohh how I want to see more on how the coming days and weeks went for Garrett!!! I hope he and Gillian make an appearance in the next book!! 😍

For a lover of vampire romance, being enthralled by a vampire is always awesome. But not in this book, not with Kurt Lawrence anyway. When Gillian Howe finds that her cousin Brooke has been kidnapped into the DuSang Brotherhood, all bets are off. Only she finds that she needs help to save her, Garrett Mulroney's help, the last thing she wants. Sparks rage, the suspense keeps you on the edge of your seat, finding out what happens to these characters kept me turning page after page without being able to put the book down. A wonderful second book in a wonderful series.

Midnight Temptation, Shari Nichols

Review from Jeannie Zelos book reviews

Genre: Romance, Sci-fi and fantasy.

I enjoyed book one but had a few reservations about the central characters. This book doesn't have that issue for me, I was easily convinced of the burgeoning romance between Garret and Gillian.
Although they don't get along, to the degree they really dislike each other, I could feel the attraction between them and once they really got talking the reasons for that dislike they each held were explained. Unlike book one where I felt they moved on too quickly, this time the romance was very convincing.

I loved Gillian in book one, and here she really comes into her own. She's a very talented witch, and a loyal friend, and when her cousin is taken she will do anything to get her back, risking her own life in the process. I loved her anti vampire spray and the reactions when she used it ;-)
Garrett doesn't do human relationships, as a vampire that's just too hard. He's a good guy, could turn to the dark side like so many of his brethren and his sire, but he's chosen to use his talents to fight for good. The attraction with Gillian is a struggle though, he avoids human relationships but what he feels for her is too strong to ignore.

Its a neat story, a solid romance, with the suspense of rescuing Brooke, and the link via the Du Sang guys to book one. You can read it as a stand alone, but I think you'll get more if you're read book one. I love that unlike so, so many fantasy reads, these characters are older, not teens. Somehow its difficult to take so many reads seriously when some 17 year old is calling the shots, ruling over hundreds of years old supernaturals. I can't recall learning her age but Gillian feels to me to be about late twenties, maybe early thirties. Old enough to be believable, and to have learned much from life, unlike the teens that populate this genre. She's a character I can identify with easily, ( though sadly I'm way past her age in years, just not in my heart).
Both books are easy to read, there's no heavy, complex plots so its perfect for those times when you just want a story to escape everyday life with, one that's easy to read and won't have you flipping back and forth to work out who fits where in the tale. Sometimes I want a read that's heavy and detailed, other times I want this, a simple beach read type story. ( I say simple – I couldn't write it, I don't mean simple in that way, just simple as in straight forward, no tricky plots waiting to turn everything on its head).

Stars: Four, another fun read from Shari, with a genuine romance and a suspense filled backstory.

2.5, round up

This was not for me. The whole thing just annoyed me. Most of the decisions driving the plot made no sense to me. The heroine too often acted too stupid to live and the hero's entire personality seemed to be developed by virtue of his fancy house and expensive car (and big dick). It was completely predictable. (I predicted not only the ending but how that ending would come about before the halfway mark.) Obstacles were overcome too easily and everything felt flat.

The flatness I know comes from the writing though. It is almost entirely tell and dialogue. There is far too little show to make the reader invest in anything. It also does things like force the author to make everyone run a charity so we know they are good people, instead of just showing us the actions of a good person in the course of the book. We're told everyone's heart is overflowing with love or emotions, instead of showing us people overwhelmed with love or emotions. Both characters have to share their traumatic past in order to have any depth, instead of the reader simply being shown some character depth. We're constantly told, "she decided she should..." or "he thought..." instead of simply being shown what she decided of he thought.

Lastly, the book needs another editing pass. Off the top of my head, I remember missing spaces, the word 'curse' used in place of course, and some phrases popping up repetitively. (I think "magick pure and bright" must have shown up almost every time Gillian accessed her magic.)

I liked Gillian and Garrett, don't get me wrong. But the book itself didn't light me on fire.

Do you enjoy enemies-to-lovers? Are you a fan of fantasy? Do you enjoy witches and vampires? Are you interested in mysteries? Do you long for a little bit of suspense, well-written characters, excellent world building, and some steamy romance? Well, this book has it all.

This is the adult version of many young adult fantasy books I’ve read. If you enjoy any of the multiple series by Cassandra Clare, you’re going to like this one.

What I really liked about this book is that it’s not just a romance and it isn’t focused solely on what’s happening in the bedroom. Instead, it’s a blend of developing characters, paranormality, and a mystery. It’s the perfect bundle. I have found that I truly enjoy Shari Nichols’s writing style and how effectively she crafts a mystery.

I truly enjoyed Gillian’s character and I was rooting for her from the beginning. Ms. Nichols takes us on a wild ride to help track down Gillian’s missing cousin and I found that Gillian was an excellent protagonist for this kind of book—strong, loyal, and caring. She’d go to the ends of the earth for her loved ones. By contrast, Garrett is a true alpha—stiff, detached, sexy. I was on the edge of my seat waiting for the two of them to push past their utter disdain for one another.

I highly recommend this book (or any written by Shari Nichols!) if you’re looking for a quick pace, a tantalizing romance, and characters you can root for. I can’t wait to read more of her work and see where the next story takes me.

Midnight Temptation by Shari Nichols is the second book in the Ravens Hollow Coven Series, and while you could technically read it as a stand alone, I highly recommend you reading book 1 first. The characters are continued and the story/main character does continue from the first book.

This book gives us tarot card reader Gillian Howe and detective Garrett Mulroney...vampire detective Garrett Mulroney...the author grabs the readers attention right from the very start and never lets it go! The reader is drawn straight into the pages of the story and can't seem to find a place to stop reading...even though their everyday life and chores are waiting for them.

Author Shari Nichols writes a story that leaves the reader with a book hangover that rivals all hangovers! The story is filled with loops, curves, twists and turns and the reader can't seem to predict what is going to happen next! This is one of my favorite books by author Shari Nichols...but they all instantly become my favorite...

Don't miss out on this story or any of her others! She is one of those authors that I instantly want to read, even without knowing a thing about the book, it is an instant add to the list! Don't miss out on an amazing read by this author, add this to your TBE list and move it straight to the top of your TBR list!

Garrett and Gillian are an unlikely pair to have to work together. Not only is this difference
due to the fact that she's a witch and he's a vampire, or that their first run-in was on a case
involving the Magickal Bureau of Investigation, but also because each of the pair is strong-willed
and has definite opinions about the other one. But when Brooke, Gillian's cousin, gets abducted
by another vampire, the two have to work together closely, not only to rescue Brooke but to
protect Gillian from retaliation. But is that the only reason Garrett refuses to let the fiery Gillian
out of his sight?

Shari Nichols takes her readers back to Raven's Hollow in __Midnight Temptation_, and it
is a journey that I have been anticipating for some time. The focus in this novel is on vampires,
and like much of the world we find some examples of both its bright lights (in the character of
Garrett himself) and some of its darkest depths. It's within this woven plot of vampire intrigue
and excess that the relationship of the two protagonists grows, and the story strikes a good
balance between keeping the proper pace without sacrificing the depth of its setting or its
characters. And as always, the dialogue feels very real, even in such an extraordinary setting.
The book is an enjoyable entry in the series and is a great follow-up to its predecessor.

I dropped into this series here so I missed the original "oops" connection for these two characters it was still easy to follow as the author included bits and pieces so I knew the overall reason for the animosity Gillian held towards Garrett

Fast-paced action with a slow build romance
Garrett was a bit stuck on himself - but I guess with age you can get a bit of an ego
Gillian was on the giving side of humanity - smart, thoughtful but at times a bit naive
Enjoyed watching these two trying to navigate in unfamiliar territory - The back and forth as well as the chemistry that simmered just below the surface
The twists were a touch predictable yet still a lot of fun

Midnight Temptation by Shari Nichols is the second book in the Ravens Hollow Coven Series. Each book can be read as a standalone but they do reference characters from the other books.

This is the second book of Shari’s that I have read and it definitely won’t be my last. I absolutely love this series! Shari does an amazing job pulling you into the story. Gillian and Garrett’s love story was a roller coaster but you couldn’t help but root for them in the end.

I would highly recommend this book if you love paranormal romances, enemies to lovers, or fantasy romance.

I enjoyed book one in this series and this book was just as good, if not better. It was well written and the characters and story were both well developed. I love the mix of new and old characters. I loved Gillian’s strong motherly personality and enjoyed seeing the relationship dynamics evolve and develop. The story was action packed and full of twists and turns but was still an easy read. It had suspense, emotion, intrigue and hot chemistry. I’d highly recommend this book and look forward to future reads from this author!!

I received an arc for a voluntary review.

What do you get when you take a witch looking for her missing cousin and add a vampire? You get a wonderful enemies-to-lovers paranormal romance, that’s what. When Gillian and Garrett are forced to team up to find Gillian’s missing cousin, sparks fly. I enjoyed Gillian and Garrett together. These two work well together for me. The constant denial of attraction kept me glued to my kindle, wondering when will they give in to the temptation. I wasn’t disappointed!

Midnight Temptation is a nicely paced story, with action in all the right places. This book has humor, suspense, and immense dislike. I love an excellent enemies-to-lover story. This can be read as a standalone and you won’t feel like you missed something, but you would get a much fuller story if you read this in order.

This is the second book in the Raven Hollow Coven series; however, this book can be read as a stand-alone. I have not read the first book yet but I cannot wait to pick it up. This is not my usual genre so I was not sure what I was going to think, so I am happy to say that I really enjoyed it. This is an enemies to lovers story, and it was so easy to read.

This book has wonderful female friendships and that is something that I am finding that I really enjoy in my stories. This coven is really a family and these girls watch out for each other. Gillian is a force to be reckoned with and did not have to be “saved” by the big strong Vampire. Okay, so I like strong female characters too! She might be a witch but she stood toe to toe with more than one vampire. I loved the fact that she was not a damsel in distress. Garrett was a complicated character there were times when I wanted to shake him but he was open enough to listen to people and see that he doesn’t always know what is best for everyone.

If any of this strikes your interest. You should really give this one a chance.

The last person Gillian Howe expects to see at her supernatural speed dating event is Detective Garrett Mulroney. Sure, he’s a hot vampire but whenever they’re in close contact, all she wants to do is throttle him. Later, when she and her cousin arrive at a party thrown by a wealthy vampire, things go from bad to worse when her cousin is bitten and then kidnapped by the Du Sang Brotherhood. She’ll do anything to free her cousin from the thrall of the Du Sang Brotherhood and partners up with Garrett. They pretend to be a couple to bring down the Du Sang Brotherhood but when the faking ends and a real attachment takes shape, will they be able to embrace true love or will they go their separate ways when they take down the Brotherhood?

Midnight Temptation is such a fantastic enemies-to-lovers paranormal romance filled with suspense, intrigue, vampire lore and killer sexual tension. From the very first page, I connected with Gillian. She’s such a fun heroine with plenty of foibles and self-effacing inner dialogue. The romance between Gillian and Garrett is slow-building with plenty of angst. What makes Midnight Temptation one of the best paranormal romances I’ve read in a long time is the vampire lore Shari Nichols creates for this story. Not only does it make sense, historically, but it is completely original. The plot moves at a fast pace with a few shocking twists I didn’t see coming. If you’re a fan of urban fantasy with steamy romance, you’ll enjoy Midnight Temptation. Highly recommend!

The featured characters in the 2nd book of the series, we met in book one. Alex and Willow are engaged, and we do see them pop up in this book, but they do not take any major roles in this book. This time, Gillian hosts a supernatural speed dating event with her cousin Brooke, and an event partner in Kurt Lawrence, a vampire with many high connections. When invited up to the penthouse afterward for an exclusive party – they find a human trafficking ring and Brooke is kidnapped. Garrett, a vampire on the police force has to keep Gillian safe, since she’s been targeted. And that’s not going to be easy, since Garrett and Gillian have had their issues in the past.

This is a good book, with plenty of action, danger and romance. If you take the supernatural out of this, is plays out like a good episode of Law and Order. Heat level is higher. I think my only issue with it is toward the end with Garrett, but it’s not a huge deal. Looking forward to the next book. 4.5 Stars

3.5/5 stars for this fun, sexy read featuring vampires and witches.

Anytime you want to get lost in a story of romance, intrigue, magic and vampires, you should give this one a try. This month’s romance book reading challenge theme is Fake Relationships and I picked the Fake Boyfriend prompt. Originally, I had another book in mind for the challenge but Midnight Temptation proved to be a worthy substitute.

My absolute favourite part of this story is the world building. I love the setting created by the author. The world is based in NYC but it’s one where vampires, witches and demons co-exist with the regular human folk. The concept of the MBI (Magical Bureau of Investigations) is cute and exciting. We even get some vampire vs demon history thrown in to explain conflict between two MBI agents… although… I suspect that might just be foreplay for a later book…

Speaking of foreplay, the romance is definitely more on the spicy side but it’s not at all excessive and works within the world and characters created.

Admittedly, there is a bit more tell than show in this story. This is particularly noticeable in the way Garret evolves and accepts his feelings for Gillian. I would have liked more depth in how he decides to undergo the process of regaining his humanity. Gillian is more well-developed as a character and I really enjoyed her backstory. It’s not as dramatic as Garret’s but it’s certainly more relatable and creates a sense of how she fits in with her coven, friends and family.

I also enjoyed the suspense element. When Gillain’s cousin in kidnapped, we know by whom and why. What we then focus on is the ‘how’ of her release. I like the build up around the DuSang Brotherhood and how it is connected to Garret. (This might have been a great place to get more into the emotions of this character’s past and ultimate evolution). How Gillian ends up involved is daring and funny too. As a complete aside, I loved the descriptions of the costumes worn for the ‘big party’.

Overall, Midnight Temptation is a light, fun, sexy read featuring vampires, witches and romance.

This book sizzles with sexual tension! The interplay between the hero and heroine is hot and romantic! The secondary characters shine too. The plot was creative, not your usual vampire paranormal. I can foresee many books set in this world. I intend to read more books by this wonderful author!

I sadly can not give an honest review of this book on whether it was good or bad. I got a little over half way through it and just couldn't read any longer.
From what I did read tho...it was a very good vampire read.
