Old Point National Bank works hard to embody the very definition of community.

From its founding in 1922 in the Phoebus section of Hampton, the bank has retained an intimacy of service, despite having grown exponentially over the years. As bank mergers proliferated across the country, Old Point has remained under local management — same name, same dedicated service. Its first bank building in Phoebus remains functional, only minutes away from the new headquarters building in downtown historic Hampton.

Old Point, a subsidiary of Old Point Financial Corp., now has 19 banking offices throughout Hampton Roads and offers surcharge-free access to over 55,000 worldwide ATMs, trust and financial investment services, personal and commercial insurance services, and mortgages. Old Point recently partnered with College Ave School Loans to offer financial assistance tailored to each student’s need, including refinancing student loans.

Old Point’s success comes from longevity of leadership and excellence, according to Laura Wright, vice president/marketing director. “Our success is our commitment to family and our community. We consider every employee, board member, stockholder and customer a part of our family and strive to treat them with respect and care,” she said.

Uninterrupted service has been an Old Point constant, especially during COVID-19. The bank has kept its service-based mission running smoothly and has offered such relief as waiving penalties for CD withdrawals, a moratorium on foreclosures, deferred loan payments and quick-funded small business loans. In fact, Old Point helped save nearly 1,000 small businesses and over 10,000 jobs regionally and has obtained Small Business Administration approval for loans totaling more than $111 million through the federal Paycheck Protection Program.

While the bank encourages the use of drive-thru services, ATMs, online banking, mobile apps and telephone banking options during the pandemic, lobbies are open by appointment. Inside, the bank has implemented all mandated safety guidelines. When masks were scarce, the CEO’s family even sewed some for its employees.

For remote workers, added laptops were provided and technology was added to enable these changes, and an intranet site established for company updates and awareness of mental wellness resources. Other initiatives have been providing food to its frontline teams, a company-wide celebration to share uplifting stories and socially distant spirit weeks for the engagement of remote workers. The bank also implemented a temporary child watch for those with child care challenges.

Being a community bank means community involvement, which has always been a part of Old Point’s business plan, Wright said. That trend continues with participation in such activities as the United Way; the collection of food and supplies for food banks; grants for law enforcement, public school educators, firefighters and other first responders; affiliations with area chambers of commerce and socially-oriented service organizations; participation in charitable fund drives; and hands-on help for Habitat for Humanity homebuilding efforts.
