Top Trends in Technology 2020

Technology continues to expand at an exponential rate. Some trends that have emerged are changing how we look at the economy and human thought. Others bordered on sci-fi and then surpassed the capabilities of the boldest tech dreamers. Let's take a closer look at 2020's top tech trends.

1. Artificial Intelligence

AI has long held a spot on the list and will continue to be important in 2020. Computers are already able to learn as people do. This is due to the incredible leaps in computing power and data collection and manipulation. As more and more data goes digital, the potential applications for AI will continue to explode. The more information AI collects and analyzes, the faster it can learn and become useful to nearly every industry.

The hope is that one day AI can take on complex and critical thinking in situations too dangerous for humans. Computers can already:

  • Read messages and reports

  • Analyze facial expressions and identify faces

  • Listen by enabling Amazon Echo

  • Speak via Siri to answer your questions and requests

  • Record emotions

Soon, AI tech will be able to learn without human hand-holding. The implications are both exhilarating and frightening depending on how you look at it.

2. Voice Technology

Mobile devices are the first thing that comes to mind for voice-enable technology. However, that's no longer the sole application. Although we continue to talk to our phones and not just through them, that's almost old news. You'll still be able to drive and use your devices hands-free but so much more is on the horizon.

Applications like Siri and Alexa evolved our relationships with our personal tech. The power of voice-driven technology, however, remains rather limited. However, in 2020 and beyond, that's about to change.

In the very near future, ideas will move from the drawing board to production lines as nearly every device will learn to perform and function based on voice commands. Interacting closely with AI, natural language processing and machine learning, voice applications will find increasing utility, not only in our personal lives but in industry as well.

3. NLP

Natural language processing changes the way chatbots interact with users and expands their potential. Most businesses use chatbots to answer basic questions already. However, NLP changes the level of customer engagement and chatbots will be able to communicate much more naturally and put people at ease.

Devices, computers and apps will learn to interpret requests on a deeper level. Puns, double meaning and sarcasm will become clearer in the technology available in 2020 — thanks to NLP.

Humans will no longer have to formulate their search requests or task commands in a way that computers understand. Instead, computers are beginning to adapt to the speech patterns and mannerisms of human users.

The necessary algorithms driving this capability will process millions of computations to predict what you actually need while searching online or performing mundane tasks at work.

4. Blockchain

Blockchain is at a pivot point in its development. It definitely belongs on the tech trends list for 2020. As of now, it's only evident in a few industries — such as e-commerce and financial technology — but new industries are beginning to see the advantages of adopting this technology.

Blockchain is the most disruptive technology on the list. It started out as a way for bitcoin traders to shake hands anonymously in the digital world. Some companies are trying to raise capital through ICOs, initial cryptocurrency offerings, but that may fade out due to stringent regulations. But that wouldn't be the end for blockchain innovations.

Cryptocurrencies are already divided into different currencies just as fiat currencies are in the real world. Soon, they may become as natural to use as swiping a credit card or exchanging dollars for euros for a trip to Europe.

5. IoT

IoT has been in the top tech list for years now. So, what's coming for 2020 and the near-term future? It's been slow going getting IoT into smart homes and factories, but progress will continue to be made. The possibilities are immense and IoT is used in every step of the manufacturing process from designing customized products to carefully checking every component on a complex electronic device.
