#StoptheSpreadofRacism

Greetings, fellow PCHC-MoM Society members.  I hope that you are healthy, happy, and having a restorative summer, despite the continuing Covid-19 challenges.  Although we have had to maintain physical distance or be distantly social, in some ways, the pandemic has brought us all closer together.  Thanks to the Internet, PCHC-MoM Directors, staff, and volunteers have been able to communicate by email and to “Zoom” regularly to brainstorm on how to strengthen our Society, pursue our mission, and create safe and sustainable programs with meaningful impact.  The power of technology has allowed us-- a small, mostly volunteer nonprofit-- to bring together people from all across British Columbia, Canada, and even several continents, to enjoy diverse cultural programs and stimulating conversations.

My sincere thanks go to the many volunteers and partner organizations who made it possible for our Society to present several Multi Voice One Heart virtual concerts, plus the well-attended, virtual “Family History From a Distance" workshops given by Professor Henry Yu (a PCHC Director and founding member). Those who attended the July workshops were inspired and encouraged to start gathering and telling their stories of family and of migration to and within Canada.  If you missed those workshops, we hope to repeat them at a later date.  We want all PCHC-MoM members and friends to record and to share their stories, as we prepare for an exciting new program this fall, courtesy of the efforts of PCHC-MoM Directors Stephanie Anderson, Ada Con, Pat Parungao, Richard N. Liu, and Henry Yu, Hon. Advisor Christine Brodie, our Executive Director Winnie Cheung, and our Coordinator Sophie Munk, to name just a few. Your own storytelling efforts are integral to our mission of nurturing collaborative relationships between communities and facilitating sharing knowledge across generations, so that we can have a more complete narrative of Canada’s history.  Watch our website and next newsletter for more details.  In the mean time, to add to Dr. Bonnie Henry’s words: "Be kind; be calm; be safe … and tell your story!"

Sincerest regards,

Wendy Yip

We mourn the loss of a beloved educator -- Dr. Rosalyn Ing

It is with immense sadness that we share the news of the passing of Dr. Rosalyn Ing, a very remarkable educator and wife of our former Vice President, Lt. Col. George Ing.

An Elder of the Opaskwayak Cree Nation in Northern Manitoba, Rosalyn was a leader in social justice and education for Indigenous people in Canada. She served in the Royal Canadian Air Force (1957-1960), where she met George. She left the Air Force after they got married so as to focus on her family. Their marriage of sixty years, celebrated earlier this year, was a testimony to the resilient bond between two suffering peoples in Canada: Indigenous and Chinese. At age forty-eight, Rosalyn started her own academic journey when her children were grown up, and eventually earned three successive degrees! As a Residential School survivor and a researcher on intergenerational trauma, Dr. Rosalyn Ing was able to effect positive change and push for reconciliation for this dark chapter in Canadian history. She has been a beacon and inspiration to many indigenous youth and women-of-colour. Her life story will be one of these Pacific Canada stories which have to be documented and shared widely to generate a deeper and more inclusive understanding of Canada.

PCHC-MoM Upcoming Virtual Storytelling Series

This summer, we have hosted a couple of "Family History From a Distance" webinars with Prof. Henry Yu, UBC ACAM, and INSTRCC at UBC. Attendees learned how to conduct interviews and beginner techniques for editing, as well as how to overcome potential barriers to storytelling/gathering. If you missed our webinars with Prof. Henry Yu, you can view the first ones on Youtube

What are the barriers or challenges stopping you from documenting or sharing your family history? Do you have any questions or ideas for what would be helpful to you in this upcoming series? Send us a note at pchcmom.intern@gmail.com.

Multi Voices One Heart reached over 200,000 viewers in May

Congratulations to the organizers and partners of Multi Voices One Heart (MVOH) 2020 for their ground-breaking initiative to bring a marathon Cantonese opera benefit concert to fans in over twenty-eight countries in May. They have also far exceeded their fundraising targets for the Hong Kong beneficiaries, and helped PCHC to raise the amount we were hoping to receive from ticket proceeds if the September show at Michael J. Fox Theatre would have been able to go ahead. We are forever grateful to the MVOH organizers, partners, and donors as well as fans who gave over 8.000 likes to the concert when it was being live-streamed! Your support has made it possible for us to continue offering intercultural programming in spite of the pandemic.

In response to the requests of fans, MVOH 2020 has launched a Cantonese Opera Appreciation Series. The first episode was live-streamed in July and the second episode in late August. Click here for the schedule and to access the program on their YouTube and Facebook page.
