December 16, 2021 | Football

NORMAN — University of Oklahoma football defensive back Pat Fields added yet another honor to his 2021 resume when he was named this week to the CoSIDA Academic All-America First Team for his combined performance on the field and in the classroom.

Fields, a second-team Academic All-American in 2020 and a two-time Academic All-District 7 honoree (2020 and '21), has compiled a 3.82 GPA while simultaneously pursuing a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in accounting and a master's degree in accounting. He is projected to receive both this week.

The Tulsa, Okla., product was a 2021 finalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy and the Wuerffel Trophy, and is a finalist for the Jason Witten Collegiate Man of the Year, to be awarded in February 2022. Fields is a three-time Academic All-Big 12 First Team honoree (2019-21) and was twice elected as a team captain by his teammates (2020 and 2021). He was a Big 12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year nominee and OU's nominee for the 2021 Big 12 Male Sportsperson of the Year award.

A three-year starter at safety, Fields has played in 41 career games (35 starts) and has compiled 193 tackles, 11.5 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, 10 pass breakups and three interceptions. He ranks second on the team with his 71 tackles (41 solo) and two interceptions and has 4.5 tackles for loss this season. He earned honorable mention All-Big 12 in 2019 and '21.

Fields is Oklahoma's 55th all-time Academic All-American in football and the 14th individual to earn first-team recognition. He is the 11th football student-athlete in school history to earn two Academic All-America honors (the last was Ty Darlington, who was a first-team Academic All-American in 2014 and '15). Last year, Fields became the first OU Academic All-America defensive back since Jay Jimerson in 1980, and he is the first Sooners' DB to earn two such honors since safety Randy Hughes in 1973 and '74.
