Security Alert: Ecuador, Update on Security Situation

Location
The U.S. Mission has received notification that road blockades have been lifted in cities and towns throughout the country, including within Quito, as part of an agreement reached between the Government of Ecuador and protest organizers.

Event

The Embassy is closely following announcements that the Government of Ecuador and protest organizers reached a tentative agreement October 13 to end strikes.  The curfew imposed for Quito ended effective October 14, although this may be a temporary measure.  Monitor local media for updates on possible curfews.

The city of Quito appears to be returning to normal following the announcements, but we still advise precaution and urge U.S. citizens to continue monitoring the situation via public media until all protests conclude and to remain vigilant to demonstrations that may reoccur in some other areas.

Traffic is largely returning to normal in Quito, as well as in many cities and provinces.  Some blockades appear to have been removed, but clean up efforts to remove debris continue.  Continue to monitor local media for road closures (http://ECU911.gob.ec/consulta-de-vias/)

Quito airport is open, although scheduled flights may still be impacted.  Please check with airlines to confirm availability and/or check Quito airport’s website for flight cancellations (http://aeropuertoquito.aero/en/).  We have received information that routes to the airport are currently open.  If you choose to travel to the airport we recommend you exercise caution due to the possibility of debris on some roads and increased traffic.  We urge you to monitor http://ECU911.gob.ec/consulta-de-vias/for changes to road conditions.

U.S. Embassy personnel are being discouraged from taking long trips away from their residences and to instead take the opportunity to restock and resupply food and resources from stores, while remaining close to home.

The U.S. Embassy in Quito will reopen for emergency and routine American Citizen services on Tuesday, October 15.  The Consulate General in Guayaquil will be open for all consular services.

We urge all U.S. citizens to consider their safety foremost.  Although the situation is improving, we advise continued vigilance and avoiding areas that have seen the strongest demonstrations.  We also suggest informing your loved ones you are safe.

Actions to Take

  • Maintain vigilance.
  • Avoid any remaining demonstration areas.
  • Monitor local media for updates on road closures and flight cancellations.
  • Avoid crowds.
  • Keep a low profile.
  • Ensure adequate supplies of water, food, and fuel.
