How to choose the best tablet

Presented by JB Hi-Fi

There was a time when tablets threatened to end up as phones you couldn’t make calls on. But things have changed. Tablets have been reinvented and offer a lot more, whether you use it for work, rest, play or Netflix. As a result, finding the best one for your needs is going to mean putting in some work and doing a bit of research. Or you could just read the stuff below.

Spend what you need

Remember when there were only a few tablets to choose from and you had to be JK Rowling to afford any of them? Not anymore. There are so many options available today and at JB Hi-Fi(opens in a new tab) you’ll find one no matter what your budget. Having all the big brands on the market guarantees quality and choice.

It also means being realistic about what you want to use it for. Find one that has the features you need, and maybe just a few of the ones you think you want. You don’t need to buy a race car just to drive to work and back every day. That brings us to the next tip.

Work out what you want to do with it

One of the big keys to buying a tablet(opens in a new tab), or any tech for that matter, is working out what problem you’re trying to solve..

Today’s tablets come with so many features, it’s all about narrowing down to the ones that suit. Some tablets can be great laptop alternatives, allowing you to do all the same stuff, just with extra flexibility. If you work in a creative field, a tablet is almost a must, with super-portable medium-range and top-end devices that will bring your ideas to life in a few easy strokes.

And if you just want something to keep the kids quiet, then there are heaps of simple tablets that are perfect for Minecraft and YouTube.

Power up or down

Size does matter, so choose a tablet that will satisfy you. Depending on what you want to use it for, screen size can be important. For the most part, the bigger the screen the bigger the price tag.

The same goes for storage and RAM. At the moment, you can choose from 1 to 16GB of RAM. Basically, the higher the number the faster you can do things.

Storage is also important, especially if you’re using your tablet for games, and you’ll find a range of about 64GB to 1TB today. If you’re using your tablet for work, or even storing photos, there may be more value in choosing the right cloud storage option or working out which device syncs better with your work servers.

Pens are in stylus

Tablets are no longer just tablets, they do so much more. And the big news is that pens are back. Steve Jobs laughed at the stylus when launching the first iPhone, but everything has come full circle.

Unlike their earlier cousins, tablet pens are today used for more than just pointing. Handwriting-to-text tech means they’re useful in helping you become paperless, and as a designer they’re invaluable. Whatever you create, the modern-day pens are a massive breakthrough and make drawing, writing, and designing really, really easy.

Keyboards have also added a new dimension to tablets. Simple to attach or detach, you can take them anywhere. These extra features give you more options with tablets than you’ve ever had before.
