Webinar Summary

Important progress has been made to address the lack of proper sanitation in developing Asia and the Pacific, though it remains a persistent challenge in many places. While there are many feasible solutions from an engineering standpoint, it is often unclear which of these local policy makers should adopt. Notably, city-wide inclusive sanitation (CWIS) is gaining traction as an integrated approach that can help to achieve the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.

This ADBI-Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation virtual session on CWIS featured Takuya Urakami of Kindai University in Osaka who presented a case study of Hyogo Prefecture that explains Japan’s complex sewage industry and regulatory reforms within the sector. The session also included a discussion of key issues affecting the operations of sewage services as well as spotlight city-wide inclusive sanitation best practices to help guide policy decision-making.
