The importance of work safety cannot be under estimated. Apart from WHS compliance obligations, every employee deserves to work in a safe work place. Implementing proper workplace policies and procedures reduces risk of safety incidents. Safety incidents have both a human cost and a financial cost.
Types of workplace hazards
Safety hazards
These are the most common type of workplace hazard. Examples of safety hazards are wet floors that people can slip on, clutter than people can trip over, confined spaces, heights, machinery, hazardous tools, electrical hazards, etc
Physical hazards
It’s not unusual for people to work in hazardous environments. This might mean working outdoors and being exposed to sunburn and ultraviolet rays, or working in extreme temperatures, working around constant loud noise, or being exposed to radiation.
Chemical hazards
Chemical hazards refer to workplaces where staff members are exposed to chemicals. This might be from solvents, paints, cleaning products, fertiliser, pesticides, and various gases.
Biological hazards
Biohazards include bacteria, viruses, mould, insect bites, and blood transfer among others. Every work place has biological hazards and risk can be reduced by have specific biohazard policies.
Ergonomic hazards
Ergonomic hazards relate to how humans physically interact with their work environment. This can involve their seating posture, the suitability of the chair they sit on, lifting technique, repetitive lifting, repetitive strain injury (RSI), etc.
Human hazards
Human hazards refer to human interactions in the workplace and can involve stress, bullying, sexual harassment, and discrimination.
