DurhamRuth GlaeserEmailDURHAM (WGME) Town leaders in Durham are urging residents not to open e-mails that appear to be from them, after several e-mail addresses were compromised.
Officials say if you've received an e-mail from the town of Durham, do not open it.
They say the e-mails that started showing up last Friday could contain a virus that could spread to your own e-mail account and to your computer.
If you do receive a suspicious e-mail from the town, you are asked to permanently delete it.
“We don't know whether they're just trying to look for different information, personal information or whether they're trying to get bank accounts,” Town Administrator Ruth Glaeser said. “We really have no idea.”
The e-mails contain zip file attachments.
Town leaders say they will never request personal or banking information by e-mail.
The e-mail server affected has been shut down and the town is now investigating.
