So many students across the country have missed out on some pretty big milestones, competitions, performances– the list goes on. As you can imagine, this has led to some very disappointed children. However, nothing was going to stop the Harrison Stingers of Steel Robotics Team from giving back to their community. They are using their school’s 3D printers to make different pieces of personal protection equipment for different area first responders, hospitals, and nursing homes.

Kevin Smalley, the lead mentor for the Harrison Stingers of Steel Robotics Team and the Technology Coordinator at the Clare/Gladwin I.S.D. says, “There was a big call, I kept seeing it on social media and our school principal kept seeing it on social media. So when the kids started messaging me and bringing it up as well, we decided it was time to act. The school had several 3D printers for their S.T.E.M. department so we have put all those to good use.”

Although the students aren’t working directly with the 3D printers at this time do to the stay-at-home order, they have been given the task of finding elastic and different supplies to drop off.

With 6 printers, Smalley is able to do around 30 per day without a problem. This selfless and innovative thinking is benefiting those in their community and beyond.
