Hello from DBN

We know we said we would make the newsletter monthly again but then we started to receive some really positive news items from some of our members and we couldn't wait to share them with you! We thought there was enough to send out a short update to everyone this week and hope you'll find it useful.

This time we're celebrating more DBN business birthdays, businesses going international and on 26 October our first DBN Marketing Mastermind Hour with Melanie Cant to help you with your social media content.

We're also offering a free check for all DBN members with Great Annual Savings Group to find out if you could be making savings on your utilities, energy and telecoms bills. If you manage to save just £99 a year, you will effectively be having your DBN membership for free!

If you have any news stories you would like us to share with everyone, please send them across and we'll include them in our next newsletter later this month. And please don't forget to book our first ever DBN in the Dark event, it should be brilliant - if that's not a contradiction... Beautifully carved pumpkins win prizes too!

DBN Marketing Mastermind Hour with Melanie Cant and guests
Monday 26th October 10am - 11am

A bite-size marketing hour with Q&A to help your business marketing.

In this DBN Marketing Hour Melanie and guests will discuss creating content for your social media. We will discuss why many people get writers block and look at writing posts that showcase your services.

And now for something very different…

DBN After Dark…
Join us for a spooky event on Wednesday 28th October 10pm - 11pm

On 28th October we’re having a very different and special event. It's our Halloween get together and will be our first “DBN in the Dark” with archaeologist Tony Liddell.

Tony is going to tell us about recent and upcoming local digs and he is also going to share some of his more gruesome discoveries over the years and tell us about supernatural events in local places that defy explanation... Did you know that not all skeletons lose their skin and hair? And then there’s the story of the “marmite man”...

Originally intended as a morning event, our members asked for this one to take place after dark… So we’re breaking with all conventions and having this meeting from 10pm – 11pm. And to create a suitable atmosphere we’re asking everyone to join us on Zoom by torchlight, candlelight or even a pumpkin lantern (we may just have a prize or two for the best ones).

As it’s an evening event and you’ll be at home, your family members are most welcome to join us too. Don’t believe in spooky stuff? Just wait till you see the photos…

Book below (if you dare!)

You can still get to know our members even if we can't meet in person at the moment.

Our podcasts are a great way to get to know DBN Members. We currently have podcasts on our website with Gary, Joanne Rowland, Ruth Jacobs, Mags Bradshaw, Rachel Locke, Moira Barnes and Matthew Glover.

Ruth said: "Having just celebrated Jacwicks Designs 2nd Business Birthday. I was delighted to be asked to speak to Melanie Cant of Elm Marketing Solutions about the Jacwicks journey so far, as part of the DoBusinessNetwork (DBN) members podcast series. Hear about where the name Jacwicks came from, how I work with a local charity and how I helped protect a national treasure's bottom. So roll out a Perch, grab a cuppa and have a listen".

Melanie is currently recording more podcasts with our members and we'll start uploading these later this month.

You can listen to DBN podcasts here

Bill's 'explosive' interview on BBC Radio Newcastle

It's a little-known fact that on October 6th 1854 the people of Tyneside believed that the end of the world was upon them. In the early hours an explosion occurred which shook the city of Newcastle upon Tyne and its neighbour Gateshead to their very foundations.

During our Beamish Test Day we discovered by chance that an ancestor of Melanie Cant had been killed in the great Newcastle / Gateshead explosion back in 1854 and that the whole thing started in a warehouse owned by an ancestor of Bill Croney of Sanguines Catering…

BBC Radio Newcastle picked up on this story and interviewed Bill earlier this week. Bill said, "local history should be taught in schools. This is more relevant to the region than the Great Fire of London." We totally agree. Well done Bill!

You can read all about the Great Gateshead Fire by clicking on the image and you can hear Bill's interview on BBC iPlayer.

First we have Mags on TV and now we have Bill on the radio, plus the one and only John Atkinson... We have a wealth of media stars in DBN these days!

DBN Members go international
The switch to digital business is opening new doors for some DBN members. It's fantastic news and proof (if we needed it) of the innovation and adaptability of our small businesses.

Ruth provides protection to the USA

Here at Jacwicks we have been working flat out to fulfill orders of our pretty and practical face masks

Our reputation is spreading and we are not only sending them the length and breadth of the UK, we are now supplying internationally with orders from North America on a regular basis.

Our handmade triple layered masks are not just pretty, (we also have colours and designs that are suitable for other tastes) they have adjustable elastic straps for you to fit at home for a closer comfortable wear. They are sustainable, you can wash and reuse, have pleats at the nose and chin for a closer fit and can be matched with outfits or the Perch range for a coordinated look.

But don’t just take our word for it our customers tell us:

‘Excellent fit and very comfortable!’ (sundryreflections)

’Perfect!!! I had to mend all my previous masks to fit my face, cause they were all huge, but this one was just right, and the adjustable elastics reeeally help!’ (Marina)

Ann adds “courage over comfort” skills to take her business global

I'm excited to reveal the first of five VisualDoodles I’ve created which captures the inspirational ideas and groundbreaking research by Dr Brené Brown. This was commissioned by Dare to Lead™ Licensed Facilitators Julie McVeigh and Amber Farrier of Connected Coaching NE

The VisualDoodle™ visually communicates a summary of the introduction, it acts as a quick reminder of the evidence based research, actionable advice and world class wisdom shared in the course.

I'm proud to be Dare to Lead™ Trained having successfully completed the phenomenal programme just before lockdown. I chose courage over comfort to become a daring leader and embrace vulnerability... which has proved to be invaluable during these challenging times!

***NEWS*** I’ve been working with a specialist North East business to develop ‘VisualDoodle Art’ - I’m now able to offer A2 poster prints and signed original Canvas art of any of my VisualDoodles. These can be shipped directly to you, anywhere in the world. I’ve received enquiries about purchasing my VisualDoodles from as far away as the US and Australia.

Although I’ve been in lockdown, my business is growing and going Global!

Brenda goes international

I’m not just national but international! I’ve been quiet on social media during the COVID situation as I’ve been very busy putting planning in place for many clients. You may be aware that with our new software & video calls I can work with clients nationally & I now have a client in Italy! Distance is no longer a barrier to using me for your planning & I’ll look forward to hearing from you.

All Talk, No Waffle success for James

“I always learn or get reminded of what I should be doing more of when I watch these, thanks!” - Lucy Patterson

Thank you ALL for your incredible and supportive comments in response to my ‘All Talk, No Waffle’ video content. It means the world to me to read it! I set out to create these teeny tiny snippets of video advice because so many business owners should be creating video but they just don’t know where to start or how to conquer certain barriers along the way.

Either way, as a treat for those of you who are following this series, I’ve got two more episodes coming this month that I’ll be posting them on LinkedIn very soon. So be sure to keep your eyes peeled for them, and keep telling me if you are genuinely enjoying them in the comments!

National accreditation for Red Button Marketing training course

Red Button Marketing & Training’s innovative new marketing strategy training course has been independently verified by The Institute of Leadership and Management, opening a new pathway for learners to access institute membership.

The company’s strategic marketing workshop is the first in the region to be approved by the institute, which means that it meets their world-class, evidence-based standards known as the Five Dimensions of Leadership – authenticity, vision, achievement, ownership and collaboration.

This latest achievement adds to Red Button Marketing & Training’s success earlier this year when the same course was awarded CPD (Continuing Professional Development) accreditation and underpins the course as an effective management training and support tool.

This year its more important then ever to SHOP LOCAL!

Our small businesses are having a tough time, local fairs have been cancelled, markets not going ahead. One things for sure Christmas is still happening so instead of giving your hard earned cash to the huge multinationals, shop local and spend it with the mum of 2 around the corner! Trust me it feels awesome.

Tag your business on social media or your friends /families businesses and post a photo of what your selling too. Please no other cake makers though :)

I have gift vouchers available for cupcakes or treats in the new year too should you wish to spoil a loved one with a surprise cake delivery!

Gary chats about R&D Tax Credits on the Lumo podcast

It was lovely to be asked to record a podcast for Lumo Tax about how R&D Tax Credits can benefit businesses of all sizes.

It's a fact that many small and medium-sized businesses don't think they will qualify for R&D tax credits but many are eligible. It costs nothing to have a chat with the team at Lumo to find out. There's never been a better time for a cash injection into your business!
