7 Hotel Hacks When Traveling with Your Baby

Traveling with a baby is hard. You have to manage your little one without the supports you have built into your home, such as a changing table, their crib, or a refrigerator full of food. Here are some tips and hacks that will help you survive a trip with your baby.

Burp Cloths

Try to Get an Apartment-Style Room

Instead of a normal hotel room, try to get an apartment-style room. This will come with a fridge, stove, and microwave, which should be most of what you need if your baby is still dependent on milk or formula. If you can’t get that, ask the front desk about a fridge or mini-fridge to store perishables for your baby. Then, all you need is baby bibs to keep the hotel room clean.

Clear a Space for Changing Diapers

Clear a space that you will use for changing diapers. This could be the bed, the desk, or even the floor. If you don’t have a pad meant for changing, you can always use a receiving blanket as protection from the surface and keep your baby warm. Plus, a receiving blanket is highly versatile for other uses, making it perfect for bringing on a trip.

Use the Ice Bucket Liner

One of the easiest hotel hacks is to take out the ice bucket liner and use it to contain soiled diapers if you don’t have bags already. This will cut down on the hotel smelling terrible after a change.

Keep Your Baby in the Bathroom

If the room’s blackout curtains aren’t working, or there aren’t any blackout curtains, try putting the roll away crib (don’t forget to ask the front desk about one) in the bathroom. If there is a big enough closest, that can also work. The bathroom will keep your little one in a separate room, in the dark, helping them sleep. Don’t forget a white noise machine, and, if you have one, a video monitor for peace of mind.

Keep Your Routine

As tempting as it is to break routine, keep to your normal schedule. Babies are creatures of habit, so try to feed your baby and put them down for nap and bedtime at the normal time, adjusted for time zones.

Bring Painter’s Tape

Need an easy way to baby proof? Painter’s tape can cover outlets and keep toilet lids down.

Just Bring the Essentials

Bring only what you need. Don’t bother lugging around a portable crib if the hotel can provide them. Instead, focus on a few toys, a few books, a favorite blanket or swaddle, bibs and burp cloths for feeding time, and enough snacks to keep a baby from being hungry during travel. Remember that flights can get delayed by hours, so keep a variety of snacks with you when traveling.
