Indiana was recently approved for the COVID response program called
Pandemic EBT (Electronic Benefit Transfer).
What this means is that all Indiana students who were
participating in the Free & Reduced Lunch benefit should be receiving
benefits either to their household’s existing SNAP EBT card, or a new card
issued to the household for just this benefit if the family was not on SNAP.
Following is an excerpt from the P-EBT website:
"Pandemic Electronic Benefit Transfer (P-EBT) provides nutritional resources to families who have lost access to free or reduced-price school meals due to school closures. Families will receive money on a new or existing EBT card to help fill the school meals gap. The average benefit will be $5.70/day per student, retroactive to when school initially closed."
More information about the program can be found at the Pandemic EBT website. Here is a brief FAQ regarding the program from the FSSA website:
Four key aspects of the P-EBT program to keep in mind:
These
benefits replace school meals and are for all families that receive free
and reduced-price school meals.
P-EBT
benefits supplement grab and go student meal sites. They do not replace
them.
Benefits can only be used
to purchase SNAP eligible items, more information at this USDA website.
The
public charge rule does not apply to P-EBT benefits.
