Coco Noir by Chanel is a Amber Woody fragrance for women. Coco Noir was launched in 2012. Coco Noir was created by Jacques Polge and Christopher Sheldrake. Top notes are Grapefruit, Bergamot and Orange; middle notes are Rose, Geranium, Jasmine, Narcissus and Peach; base notes are Patchouli, Sandalwood, Olibanum, Tonka Bean, Vanille, White Musk, Cloves and Benzoin.

Coco Noir ilaunches in September 2012.

"For Coco Noir, I thought of Coco and of Coco Mademoiselle too, because it’s also part of the history. I wanted to continue exploring an entire esthetic range of CHANEL perfumery, a range that distinguishes itself from the Florals, one that is illustrated by Bois-des-Iles and Cuir de Russie. I took it up with Coco. It’s what I like to call the CHANEL Coromandel culture, what you see and feel in her apartment. The night vision of the ‘Orient that starts and ends in Venice’ imposed itself upon me and that is where I wanted to go.” perfumer Jacques Polge.

In 1984, there was Coco, that sumptuous blend of wood, resins, flowers, spices and fruit. A treasure trove of splendours and an endless source of discovery and sensual delight. Then, in 2001, came Coco Mademoiselle, a breath of air that lightens this cornucopia of fragrance, in which everything is simplified and accelerated in a radiant burst of fruit and flower. And today there is Coco Noir, a great nocturnal Baroque. Another journey in the wake of a Gabrielle who fully embraced the dazzle of black and Venice, incorporating them not only into her creations but into her life.

Top notes: grapefruit, Calabrian bergamot, Heart: rose, narcissus, rose geranium leaf and jasmine. Base: tonka bean, sandalwood, vanilla, patchouli and white musk frankincense.

Not gonna lie i was initially intrigued by the bottle, it's so cool and beautiful??
I wasn't a Chanel person, not that they smell bad it's just too easily recognizable, so i tried a decant first and turned out this is my most favorite of all by far, however it doesn't have any longevity on me it evaporates after 1-2 hours.
I still bought it, 60% because of the bottle design and 40% because of the fragrance lol. Very pretty to put in my vanity but I don't think i will repurchase.

isha2003

I smelt the sample for this one, and bought it the next week. girls who love mens after shave/fresh scents, this is it. I usually go for fresh/fruity/not cloying sweet scents, I've been wanting to try heavy woody scents for a while, they give me headaches, sandalwood is the only one i like but not a heavy scent profile, but the tonka bean/vanilla/benzoin in this helps weigh it down to a darker chocolatey note. To my nose, this fragrance stands out compared to all other Chanel women fragrances, the others are pretty and floral. This one is a classy and sophisticated perfume, like she is a girlboss, mature yet youthful. I think its the Jasmine/olibanum, which makes this feel like you'd wear it at night as well. The dry down is masculine, but i'm obsessed, when i first smelt it i thought it was pretty basic, but the dry down is something i'd die for. I'd personally only wear this on colder days and at night though, you'd have to be well put together to wear this one sort of.

Totalcrazys

I have COCO and this doesn’t even come close to it . It smells more like calmer softer version of CM . More creamy not so sharp ! 🤨 dry down is a bit masculine sort of shower gel 😣
Edit: so at first I wasn’t impressed at all but after a few times trying it I literally became obsessed with it 😒 I don’t know but it is so fresh and clean and creamy I love it ! Bought a full bottle and I will wear this as a day fragrance! Coco is more evening one for me !

jadepo21

Hmm, not what I was expecting. There is something vintage in this and, for my taste, it leans a little masculine in the dry down. It's heavy and thick, almost syrupy but without being sweet. I am hoping it will grow on me with more wear and I do think it's nice. I was just expecting it to be an instant love.

I rejected this for a few years largely because I simply couldn’t pick up the scent while standing in the usual cloud of scents of a department store until finally couple of years ago I got it. Sadly, it doesn’t have the power and projection of other Coco flankers, but it is simply a divine true flanker of Coco; the dna of the OG but stripped away of the baroque qualities that some would deem dated. It’s toned down the 80s spices and amped up the rose patchouli bringing it to the modern era. The OG edt has been my sig for decades and I love every flanker since then- they all really do have the dna of the OG but Coco Noir is the best modern adaptation and would be one of my all time top 5…perhaps top 3 fragrances for life.

fairypond

My mom received a full bottle of this as a gift a while ago and hated it, so she gave it to me. I usually don't enjoy Chanel fragrances so this was a pleasant surprise. It still has that vintage, old-fashioned dna, but I think this is much more wearable and modern than no 5. Bright, spicy patchouli, and a musky drydown. Leaning unisex in my opinion.

deadxxxmoon

Very unlike most Chanel I’ve smelled such as Number 5.
But that’s exactly why I love it at first smell. It’s a mixture of grapefruit, spice and vanilla. And I’m always in search of classy gourmands with a bit of spice or amber to it.

Not sure if it’s “dark,” however.

I tested Coco Noir multiple times before, but each time I felt a bit underwhelmed. Not because that it's a bad perfume, not after all. It is very Chanel in every aspect, but I find it too bright to be "noir".

However, I found an older batch of Coco Noir, and I wanted to give it another chance. It's classy, elegant and beautiful, very bright citruses in the opening. Later the rose emerges with some patchouli and spices, but all in all too shy and the story ends there.

Coco Noir's character is much closer to Coco Mademoiselle, a fragrance I have never liked. The original Coco, however, is one of my favourite perfumes. I wish Chanel released flankers closer to the original Coco.

The original Coco EdP is the only noir in the whole collection. Nothing can dethrone her.

I do not like Chanel fragrance except this one. It smells so creamy.

This might be the smoothest perfume I've ever smelled. I've been collecting for about two years and have gone through countless tester bottles of fragrance. On the cap I didn't think much of this scent, but as soon as I sprayed it on myself i realised I was wrong. It's a warm, inviting, musky citrus - nothing sharp or screechy at all. I really can't get over how well blended it is. I'm not sure of it's performance yet but if it's good I'll definitely be purchasing.

Ljena777

I love Coco Mademoiselle and I was really looking forward to try this one. At the opening, I really liked it, but the dry down is not great on my skin. It was too musky and not as nice as Mademoiselle. I’m in my mid 30s, but this is way too mature for me, has church vibes. Some reviews said it’s a mature version of Mademoiselle, but I just think they are very different, at least on my skin. It’s also nothing special, I was expecting ‘wow’ in my head, but was quite disappointed. Underwhelming scent.

Lovaloo

Chanel have stuck this ditty in a black bottle and tacked the word "Noir" on the end, thus ripping off Tom Ford's whole shtick. I find it funny, but he's retired now, so hopefully he's unbothered. Anywho, this isn't a one-off, Chanel have kept Coco Noir in their signature range for years. They want me, the 20-something perfumista with disposable income, to take this perfume seriously.

Just like Coco Mademoiselle, Noir starts off with blindingly bright citrus aldehydes, to my nose it is a bit grapefruit-y, but only briefly. A clean, crisp watery rose emerges. Patchouli that has been scrubbed of its hippie touches, and some olibanum. These notes smell green and earthy, but not dirty. The cleanest earth you've ever smelled, roses blooming in some fresh potting soil after a rainfall. The clean laundry musks become more apparent at this phase. The santal note is not as nicely rendered as we see in No. 5 or the original Coco. To my nose it's a bit... soapy and chemical?

The first time I tried it, I liked it. Unfortunately after every successive smell session, I've liked it less. I don't expect my take will be popular, but despite the promising notes, I find CN unambitious and ultimately underwhelming. The people at Chanel seem to be stepping outside their comfort zone with this release, and it shows. It doesn't very well live up to the "Noir" in the name. This perfume reads as overly watery, crisp, and clean. It progresses to the base far too quickly, and it doesn't last well for an ambery rose chypre.

For something a bit more "Noir", I recommend Coco EDT. It's a more fulfilling experience.

Manano

😍 I love it, but not long lasting…

Msala140

Beautiful, mature and sexy. Very suitable for a work scent too. It stays closer to skin . I love all the spices notes combined with the rose and sandalwood . It’s so warming . I live in FL so I will only enjoy this during a colder day, or in office setting or when I have my temp low at home. It’s so beautiful and long lasting

katayoon.ahmadi

Really wanted to continue liking this fragrance as much as the first hour of wearing it but patchouli had to come and ruin all the ambery vibe of it for me. It’s a nice warm scent suitable for colder weather but the patchouli note is just too strong for me.

tanaC

Surprisingly unisex(?), I kinda smell something
Reminds me of BdC, no animalic tone carried over from CoCo. However’s carried over strong style of Chris into the blends using spicy note (clove to be specific)

Bloom very slow and it is patchouli kind of thing with amber support. I like this one.

scenturian

Once I reviewed this in 2012 when it was launched.

My opinion is still same, this one is darker/gothic/vamp version of Coco Mademoiselle.

I have such a personal feeling for this one. The smell is reminiscent of my grandma when she was going to the opera or concert hall wearing an expensive coat and applying Dior lipstick and powder on her face. I didn't know what perfume from her collection she was wearing back then but I think it was Coco.

Don't think I'd reach out for this one often unless I need a boost of confidence and when I want to feel more feminine.

catswearingperfume

There are some who feel that Coco Noir is not "noir" enough for the name. If you're coming from the OG Coco, that's a fair reaction. However, if you are coming from Coco Mademoiselle, this is "noir" indeed.

The opening of Coco Noir is reminiscent of Mademoiselle, but as the citrus top fades, Coco Noir really stands out. I love the spice and smoke in heart of this one. It's witchy but approachable, sensual but respectable, and serious but not uptight. I'm a fan of Chanel's patchouli and there's a perfect dose of it in Noir. It's dry, woody, and clean as opposed to dank and raw (e.g. Mugler's Angel). I almost never hear or see any talk about the olibanum/frankincense in this, but for me it's the best part! It becomes very present about 30 minutes in, and it's the facet that remains on my skin and clothes long after the rest of the scent has vanished. The incense is why I think Coco Noir is deserving of its name.

The longevity for this one is good on clothes, just okay on skin. Layering with the matching body cream boosts performance quite a bit. Projection is where Coco Noir suffers most. There isn't much projection after the first few minutes, and after about an hour it's a skin scent for the remainder of its life. It does project a bit more on clothes, but not much. Coco Noir isn't loud. I don't always mind that as I'm usually in the mood for something inconspicuous these days, but I can see the lack of projection being disappointing for some. When I need it to be louder, I just spray a little more.

Coco Noir's biggest strength to me is that it's easy to wear without being ordinary. I recently bought my second bottle. It's a staple in my collection.

rene.saller

I thought Coco Noir might be a bit too patchouli-intensive for me, but after falling in love with the Oil Perfumery dupe version, I bit the bullet and bought a 50-ml bottle. Coco Noir reminds me of a cross between Coco OG and Coco Mademoiselle, with a little bit of an airier, nuttier aspect that makes me think of coconut milk although Coco Noir doesn't smell at all tropical. It definitely has that elusive Chanel DNA, the "rich bitch" profile that gives many women an extra boost of confidence: it smells expensive and luxurious in a way that very few mainstream designer perfumes do these days.

Coco Noir is not weird or avant-garde or ostentatiously niche--it's just a beautifully balanced woody amber floral. As much as I love the phrase "nocturnal Baroque," I don't think Coco Noir fits that descriptor; I think OG Coco is closer to my idea of a nocturnal Baroque--it's much more complex and multilayered. Despite its outrageously gorgeous glossy black bottle, Coco Noir is not even especially dark--not if "dark" suggests heavy or deep. I would consider it an elegant but not particularly distinctive perfume--more distinctive than Coco Mademoiselle, perhaps, but only because Coco Mad is so ubiquitous and has spawned so many relatively convincing dupes). At any rate, I think Coco Noir is appropriate for all seasons, all times of the day, as long as you don't overspray.

After a few hours of wear, I notice the greenness a lot more, and I appreciate it. The slightly spicy geranium is lovely, too, especially as it combines with the sandalwood and leather notes in the drydown. I get a slight powderiness, too, along with a creaminess, and this quality is probably what keeps the strong patchouli note from seeming too noxious to me.

Update: Husband really loves this one. He noticed it right away and asked me what it was; because I had just sprayed it, he noted the citrus top notes approvingly. It doesn't project much after the first couple of hours, but that's fine with me; the longevity is more than acceptable, and I can make it last even longer by layering with the Oil Perfumery dupe, which is excellent.

Moonami

Patchouli overdose!! I love Chanel but all Patchouli-centric perfumes are a big NO for me!!

I was a click away from blowing my money on a full bottle but decided last minute to get a sample. THANK GOODNESS I did otherwise I would have been full of regrets.

If you love Patchouli then you'll love this but for me I'll stick to my non-patchouli Chanels.

ljsmith

Oh she’s fancy. She’s the business bitch. Perfect love child of Coco and Mademoiselle. Or mademoiselle’s coffee and cigarettes addicted older sister in shoulder pads. I love her.

Yumik

I shifted to this scent as Mademoiselle no longer has the same effect on me. I’m not mad about it, surely sits better on me as long as I wear good body spray/ mist as a base. I think it’s just weak on middle eastern skin. Would I buy again? Maybe not.

Medi24

Have loved this scent for years. 🖤 It’s classy, sexy and warm. For me it’s a more refined, heavier and more oriental version of Coco Madmoiselle.
WARNING: the first moment after spraying it’s a bit overwheming and stife (making a bit towards masculine scents), but soon develops into its best.

Palmierhunter

A lovely scent for a mature woman, this perfume screams RICH LADY!!!.
I’m in my 20s and I do not appreciate the smell but my mum loves it

Ninamariah

I felt that I needed something easy into my collection. Something classy yet comfortable and cozy, something delicate and not so unique. Sometimes I feel so exhausted that I don’t even have power to understand my own mood. If I wear some bold scent with a big character while feeling like that I just get confused. With these two scents I don’t have to think absolutely anything, no weather, neither clothes, not even how I really feel.

❓Do you recognize that mood?

CHANEL

Jacques Polge and Christopher Sheldrake 2012

Delightful very crowd pleasing mix of flowers in a warm woody base - I don’t find anything so “noir” in this one but there is a gentle breeze of warm spices. The scent is seductive and traditionally feminine. It’s delightful but it doesn’t force me to be in a good mood. I want an extrait of this one as well since it shoud have that “noir” confidence boost in it. Haven’t tried it though.

I fell in love with so many scents from NR while trying to find something inconspicuous, almost imperceptible yet attractive and sensual. I love the powdery clean musky dna in them, they are like a tender hug, I feel like I’m wrapped in a enormous fluffy cashmere blanket escaping this cruel world. Musc Noir Rose has a sweet twist in it from Plum and Vanilla. All of them smells irresistible on cloths.

Angelic3432

This is the first perfume I've tried from Chanel. I was always hesitant to wear anything from this house bc I assumed all the scents were old fashioned and catered to older women. However, this was a lovely surprise!

subtlyyours

As with all Chanel, your skin is what completes the scent and transforms it into something so utterly addictive due to its intoxicating complexity. If you love Coco and Coco Mad, if you know Chanel DNA works on your skin and want something with a little extra spice, you have to try CN

SweetEnigmaticSoul

This is one of my perfume babies! In my 20s I couldn’t stand it, NOW… I wear it at least once a week!

To my nose it’s a elegant scent! I smell all of the notes listed and I’m in awe! Today I paired with Kayali 28 and it smells good on me omg! You can definitely wear Coco Noir alone and it performs in beast mode!

This is not as sweet as Coco Mademoiselle, however it resembles the DNA.
I can’t tell someone if they need both or not.
I had to add both to my collection. ❤️❤️❤️✨

disintigratedwoman

In my early 20s I wore Coco Mademoiselle regularly and absolutely loved it. People complimented me on it frequently. After a few years though, it started to smell too sharp to my nose and I stopped wearing it. Fast-forward 10 years, and I decide to check out Coco Noir, and I’m surprised by how much I enjoy it.

To my nose I get citrus, woods and patchouli with a beautiful airiness that makes me think of a classy woman dressed in a simple black dress or trousers, having a light lunch on a patio in a luxury restaurant on a warm summer day. Overall it smells clean and almost soapy on my skin; despite the name, it does not give ‘night’ or ‘dark’ vibes.

CN definitely shares some similarities with CM, but smells more grown-up and demure. Less in-your-face, which can be a good or bad thing (depending on the person). I can definitely see myself adding this to my collection at some point.

ballerinanoir

This is finally a scent I can say it is MY SCENT. It s me!

In 2019 I tried it before going to Italia, and hated it. I was at the airport, maybe in a rush and trying other scents all mixed up and it didnt work.

I tried it again a couple of weeks ago on a hot day, crowded place and I kinda liked. Citrusy in the beginning, and then patchouli and a tad smoky . Decided to give it a try.

I bought it and used after a nice shower on a friday night to enjoy myself. And observed it evolve to a shy Allure Sensuelle Edp, which I really love, but sometimesI find too loud for everyday scent- I love the fragrance, but it is overwhelming during the summer.

Coco Noir is what I was looking for. It suits me fine at the office because it is very close to skin, and a very different scent. There is no Mademoiselle in this IMO. It has that chanelesque atmosphere, a je ne sais quois that screams Chanel, but it is not a blast on your face patchouli/citrus bomb. It is very discrete, on my skin, at least.

To sum up, Allure Sensuelle edp toned down.

Lasting power : 7 h
Sillage: discrete.
Office friendly. Date friendly.
I loved it. I am very glad I met you, Coco Noir.

chiaraherself

Very strong, even for a patchouli lover. It shares a similar vibe with Thai herbal inhalers which i love but am not totally obsessed with in a perfume.

AUyliong

Coco Noir is a frag that subverts my expectations. I was expecting something like Coco Mademoiselle meets YSL Black Opium - a Coco Mad for evening wear but this is nothing like any of that.

Firstly, this opens very differently from the regular Coco Mad. Instead of the gorgeously blended and slightly powdery orange, bergamot and lemon, Coco Noir starts with a very bright and powdery grapefruit. The fact it's that bright is surprising for a frag named 'Noir'. I would've expected something more like the deep, very dark and very serious grapefruit of the Hermès Kelly Caleche.

Despite the name this is not an evening perfume. This easily works in daytime.

20 minutes later, it transitions to the familiar very well-blended heart of the Coco Mademoiselle range. A few notes here and there are changed like switching out the ylang-ylang for narcissus but overall you can tell they are related.

Becomes a dusty narcissus 1 hr 20 mins in.

4hrs 45 mins in. It's contracted significantly. It's now very faint on my skin.

Lasted 8-9 hrs.

Morticiamonroe

Omg! My favorite Chanel fragrance! It does smell similar to Coco mademoiselle, but less sweet. The black bottle is so classy. It smells fresh and spicy at the same time.

vsmr

I smelled this at my mom’s house today and thought it was the perfect bridge between the original Coco and Coco Mademoiselle, sort of like the missing link. Before this, I didn’t understand how CM could be a flanker to the original; they seemed so different. Now it all makes sense. With that said, this DNA is not best suited for me, although my mom effortlessly rocks this as her signature scent and I love it on her. Still worth to try out!

schatzrose

Very classy date night perfume for Fall and Winter. I find it a lot more wearable compared with Coco Mademoiselle which is quite overwhelming for my taste.

Hannah.mas

Ok give this perfume a try.. at first I didn’t like it at all.. it was very spicy. But then its floral and fruity. Its very interesting

poirot303

I wore this for years and loved it but my new bottle smells quite different - very, very powdery. Trying to figure out if this has been reformulated or if I somehow received a fake version. As always, Chanel always delivers beast mode fragrances and this one is no different. My husband and daughter complain if I spray more than 1 spritz of this. Be careful!

massimilianoinquieto

scentine

There's something about Chanel fragrances that you always recognize right away. If you're comfortable with the basic DNA, the essence that they share, then many of them will be kind of an easy reach. But this similarity and convenience of familiarity also kind of reveals that you basically only need one or two at most as the range is just much narrower than for most brands.
I've come to think of Coco Noir as the arithmetic average of all female-targeted Chanel fragrances. It was the first one I bought because I was becoming intrigued by this oriental-adjacent, aldehydic character that seemed to serve as an accessible point of entry leading towards what I thought of as vintage fragrances. Coco Noir inhabits some magical goldilocks zone in that it seemingly incompasses all of Chanel's range as a brand.
It's not quite as demanding and mature as the olfactory pillar that is No.5 without bowing down to any of the current trends. It also doesn't make me think of Coco EdP at all. And yet it has a timeless quality of its own. It has sweetness, it has woodyness, it has a green edge and a slightly spicy bite, but it doesn't veer off into one direction and remains contained. In my eyes Coco Noir is the essential Chanel, the one really doing the most.

Phylira

I truly am growing very tired of patchouli, except in Coco Noir. The feeling I got the first time I sprayed this is always the first memory I get when I pick up the bottle. It’s very dark feminine, classic, and chic. I wore this every single day through college; I was an English major studying rhetoric and classics. I paired this with tweed skirts and long trench coats and my round tort glasses and felt very sophisticated and dark. People followed me around to ask me what my scent was, it was so intoxicating to the air around me. I had a very toxic, dark love affair when I first discovered this. It’s hauntingly beautiful.

Evie01

This perfume is incredibly classy and a perfect embodiment of dark femininity. It is perfectly blended, but works its magic best in colder evenings. (Would instead recommend its younger sister, Coco Mademoiselle, for summer). It lasts and projects, but the scent itself is soft

Everyone should try this masterpiece!

WhiteFlowerPrincess

There's something about Coco Noir that reminds me of the perfumes with beastly power mode from the 1980's, eventhough this fragrance was released back in 2012. It smells quite mature and strong to me and not in the best way.

I loved the romantic rose and sunny narcissus in the heart of Coco Noir and I thought that the blend of citruses in the top notes was tastefully done, but I couldn't smell the jasmine or peach in the heart notes, which would have made this fragrance much better to me personally.

I liked the vanilla in the base, but I wish that I got more vanilla in the base and I find the base far too strong on the earthy patchouli, the spicy and strong frankinscence and cloves, the resinous benzoin and the strong and masculine concentration of woody sandalwood. This all makes this fragrance far too strong and overwhelmimg to me and more like something that a man would wear almost, despite being unisex smelling in my opinion.

I got 10 hours of wear from Coco Noir by Chanel and it had an enormous sillage you could smell from miles away. I was fairly relieved when my wear test finally ended to be honest. It reminds me of the Turkish Bazaar, actually...

All in all, (despite it being a controversial view of this fragrance and me understanding that everyone likes different things and thinking that's okay) I'd give this perfume a 3.5/10.

Mmmmmm, how do I describe this perfume - moody. I mean, I’ll never stop loving the OG Coco that came out in the 80’s. It’s one of my top all time favorites!! A classic. Coco Noir is a mood and moody. She’s the grown up sister of Coco Mademoiselle and Coco is her MOTHER. I love this perfume from start to finish. Smooth and elegant. Feels like you have your s*** together when you wear it. The musky, vanilla with a hint of spice dry down is gorgeous! Love her!!❤️

MonicaCloud

Flawless. Strong and spicy, clean and sexy, warm and fresh. Like nothing I've ever smelled. Such a beast of a scent; one spray fills a room. Lasts forever with a gorgeous powdery dry-down. What a masterpiece from Chanel.

LB152

My condolences to anyone who’s had a negative experience with this fragrance. I can’t keep men off of me when I wear it. It’s my new secret weapon 🖤

EgliteDazzo

I genuinely do not understand how others say it has no longevity. One spray before bed and waking up I can still smell it strong. The dry down is to die for.

"she's a men eater"
If fragrance could wear a person, this one would wear 40 years old Monica Belucci.

UPDATE on Coco Noir

I saw a 50 ml bottle for sale on our leading online auction website here in New Zealand for $100 NZD and thought “what the heck “ and decided to give it a go. Well it came in the post today and I’m very pleased I just sprayed it once…

What a powerful concoction. It’s sort of a very spicy oriental that melts into a coffee and smells a wee bit fruity with musk undertones.

Last week I mentioned how it almost smells earthy on me..

My apologies dear reader I forgot I was wearing another perfume at time as I could no longer smell it on me. But I have learned my lesson not to layer this fragrance with Laura Ashley's No1 fragrance it hid in the background while the spotlight was on No1. No1 and Coco Noir together were enough to give me a headache.

Two days later I tried this on its own and it was lovely and had a nice blend of spices and floral. I could detect a hint of Coco Chanel and it was a warm fragrance that would be great for the cooler months. It also is quite a mature fragrance and would certainly give you that edge in the boardroom when you want to feel confident in yourself, just don't douse yourself in this.

I will probably review this again in time as I get to know the fragrance more but I know for next time to wear it by itself.

Well, this will be a lesson to not impulse buy… I was drawn to it from that scent cube in a Chanel boutique. I’d gone in to try the new Chance Eau Fraiche EDP (love that one btw). I tried it on paper and in the air, beautiful, fleeting, on paper it promptly disappeared (specifically about 30 minutes). On my skin, sillage is almost non-existent, but I get this vague hint of lightly creamy, barely fruity (the peach, I think) spices. They vastly tone down the clove note I HATE in perfumes (if only I liked it, because it sounds like Coco EDP and EDT have far superior longevity), which I appreciate, but…. I’m shocked that a perfume with a bunch of typically very long-lasting notes can’t perform.

Anyway, my angst about the longevity aside, this scent is kind of a mix between Coco Mad, Allure, and No. 5. Coco Mad for the light fruitchouli (though it avoids being so sweet or fresh), Allure for the hint of warm spices (Coo Noir avoids the pungent eye-stinging clove present in Coco), and that dry down is a classic No. 5. Lightly vanillic, creamy, musky.

Lovely perfume if you want something to sit close to your skin. It kind of feels like you’re just naturally clean and shower with expensive finely milled soaps. I’m not sure what’s supposedly “noir” about this though, unless I take into account the little black cloud over my heart to pay EDP price for what feels like an EDT.

---

Edit: Okay, fine, maybe I was a little harsh. I've sat on my bottle for a couple of weeks, and I think it's a scent that sticks VERY close to your personal bubble. Surprisingly, despite the "black=sexy" association I usually have, this one is more suitable for a work fragrance. It's very intimate, quite "serious" and grown-woman, and if sprayed on clothes, for me lasts the whole day with a VERY soft projection (probably no one else can smell it).

Liisa7

So this scent is a vibe. I don’t know how else to describe this. As a 23-year old woman I wouldn’t wear this outside of my home. It’s way too mature for me personally. BUT it’s the perfect scent for those fall days when it’s pouring rain, it’s cold and a bit dark and you are reading an old book covered with a blanket. It reminds me of elegant old ladies and the opera. I have to be in a very specific mood to wear it, but when I am and the weather is just right, it’s so-so lovely.

Coco Noir & Miss Dior 2017 the two sides of the modern classic coin !

I really love these two gems as both are rosy warm amber patchouli well-blended fragrances. For me , they are timeless classic with modern kick that I enjoy so much.

Coco Noir is more earthy grounded towards the patchouli while miss Dior is lighter, sweeter, citrusy, and leans more towards the roses but both are warm and have warm sweet amber dry-down even its not listed in both !!

freshperfumer

Just tried a sample at Sephora, the initial opening is so good, citrusy and a bit creamy. However, the drydown gave me the vibe of the "Chanel No.5 Eau Premiere or L'Eau" and I found the sillage and longevity so poor. On my other hand, I have tried the Coco Mademoiselle EDP and it lasted for hours compared to Coco Noir, unfortunately. I had so much higher expectations on that but longevity should have been better. As an initial start, I would recommend having CM and would try the CN for late hours maybe, for a night date etc while the CM is more energetic, youthful and prominent.

Happyjulie

I purchased Coco Noir several years ago, it was my second Chanel perfume, the first “grown up” representative after Chance eau Tendre. It was late summer and I enjoyed wearing it on hot summer evenings! I felt the depth and the richness of the composition, it was so gorgeous though not loud. Everything changed when it became cooler, I started to feel the harshness of patchouli and geranium and the smell in general transformed into the “mature”( don’t like this adjective in terms of perfumery but this happened to be the most suitable word))) one. I was disappointed. Tried to use it again in winter and fall but, alas, didn’t like the scent at all. Everything changed when I decided to use it on those summer days when it is a little bit cooler. OMG! This is gorgeous again! That depth, richness and coziness! For me personally CN is perfect in the second half of summer ( when the sun is of the colour of amber and bronze))) and early fall when it still comparatively warm. The patchouli is in their perfect condition in order not to be loud but to give the fragrance some class and the famous Chanel DNA!
Started to wear it at the very end of fall when it became really cold and chilly. To my surprise CN showed me her another facet! Now I feel bright grapefruit notes, spices, some suede accord and a little bit of patchouli that I really like! The fragrance is so comforting and cozy still maintaining its charm and character! I’m so happy I’ve finally made friends with this gorgeous lady!!!

MelissaKS

I sprayed Coco Noir on my arm early this afternoon just to revisit it as I organize my fragrances for fall. This evening, I sprayed Commodity Gold (expressive) on the same arm and I have to say, I really enjoy this combo. Sometimes I prefer CN alone because I like the spicy woodiness, but it pairs well with vanilla scents too. I can’t wait for the weather to cool down so I can wear this combo out.

tanny_ups

If Coco EDT and Mademoiselle had a child, this would be the kiddo. It’s the mixture of both perfumes but it’s not a strong fragrance. I like it tho

Pernillaw

Love it. So fresh, soapy clean, elegant and light.

Baldparfumeman

To me, this is one of the lesser chanel fragrances. The citrus in it comes of annoyingly as low quality. Im a man and i demanded i test this to the employee but she kept on going this is a womans scent. I didnt care and pushed through her to get to this bottle, i managed to get it on me and was escorted out by security. While the cops took my info, i kept on smelling my wrist. It can be used for a formal occasion, but very versatile for casuakity as well. 6/10 nothing too special

ava96

I expected to like this a lot but I was a bit disappointed. I prefer the original CM and CM Intense. That's not to say this is bad, but it's just not as deep and alluring as I was imagining as per other people's descriptions.

fereyal

This one smells sophisticated and classy. Although it can be used in a formal function, it is versatile enough to be used in a casual setting as well. I love it very much.

silthrill

Boss lady indeed 😍 I will be in a boardroom full of powerful men next week and I couldn’t think of a better fragrance to wear. I’ve purchased it for the confidence that this gives me. This smells so “Chanel” without smelling like the overdone Coco Mademoiselle or Chance. It’s a bit soapy, aldehydic, fresh, spicy, super sexy. Unisex but leans fem.

Samanthaheer

Spice, floral, musk. What else could I ask for. A perfect late fall/winter scent.

Shokenmo$@711

A leading note of citrus which I like. Not strong and not offensive. Short hold, so I don't think I would pay my bucks for this one.

NurseElle

@celia Pais

Nope, it's still everywhere online including the actual Chanel website?

qianqian

Grabbed a 2nd hand bottle. Can't stop smelling myself! The grapefruit glides smoothly into a woody floral scent that reminds me of a lace veil. It smells civilized, elegant and confident.

Célia Pais

Does anyone know if this has been discontinued?

Lotte_Liese

Having sampled and adored Coco, I wondered about Coco noir and I have to say that I prefer the former. The opening for this is fresher rather than a dark noir, that freshness stays a while before the spicyness and woodiness that Coco is known for, sets in. There's nothing unpleasant about this fragrance, it is actually easier on my nose compared to Coco, it's just much lighter and has less presence. Not so noir after all.

NikkiDoll

Doesn’t last - a shame as it’s an alright smell but I don’t wish to carry it around all day to reapply.

Vblue

it's mademoiselle in the black dress. The only difference is the opening more citrusy and fresh but the drydowm is really identical to CM
The longevity of it is outstanding on me actually which was surprising
It's very pretty and I loved it but over all so resemble to mademoiselle
Over all the smell is 7/10
Longevity: 9/10
Sillage: 7/10

Sweetboy05

Definitely gives off old church vibes. It's like walking into a 10:00 AM baptist church service and greeting all of the members, and there's always that one old woman giving out candy to the children and kissing you until her lipstick leaves the lip mark on your cheek. And she's wearing something either this, or something like this. Personally, I love it.

violeteme

Citruses are felt all the time, they do not disappear instantly, as is usually the case with the top notes. The base and heart of the fragrance are revealed almost simultaneously. The woody-musky base, framed by dry vanilla, resins and tonka beans, constantly echoes a tender rose heart. The rose is not cloying, not sweet, rather delicate, still unopened bud. Clove and benzoin add just a spice to the aroma. Chanel’s signature patchouli is truly noticeable.
The fragrance appears expensive, but not screaming to everyone about its existence. This is an intimate, insinuating, velvety perfume. Perfect all year round.
Moderately strict and solemn, feminine, intelligent, chic, classic. A black coat with a belt, classic heels, a lyrical woman.

HannahRosesAreRed

Nice, very nice. I love the Coco line. I love Coco Madmoiselle with its citrus-rose-vanilla-chouli notes, great for all seasons. But Coco Noir kicks it up a notch. Yes, it's very, very similar to Madmoiselle at first. They are both citrus-rose-vanilla-choulis. But Coco Noir has a darker, more mature and resinous edge that makes it excellent for cooler climates, evening events and even the boardroom. Many call Coco Noir a boss lady scent, and I have to agree. It's quite confident, and probably better for those who have made it past the big 3-0 and up–though for all you old souls out there, don't let me stop you!

Noir's scent profile is deeper and earthier. The patchouli is still strong here, earthy and mossy, with a slightly spicy edge. I think that's the olibanum, benzoin and just a hint of clove. The citrus here is a sharper, more piquant grapefruit, in contrast to the sweet orange of Madmoiselle. My skin emphasizes tonka and vanilla, so they are still pretty strong when I wear them, but Coco Noir is blended so well that the rose notes don't get drowned out.

I don't think I have the mettle to pull this off yet, but I am sorely tempted to snag this once I fully put on my big girl boss pants.

AlexandraRoseD

Love the scent, but I wish it had a higher longevity (on skin and clothes it holds for two hours after 7-8 sprays). The sillage is quite weak, thus overall not justifying the price!

Maybe the new batches are diluted??

What's the point of releasing a parfume that doesn't last at least until lunch and that nobody can smell?

Jennaflareon

Love this perfume. The scent is complex and difficult to describe. It smells confident, trusting, calm and professional.

Immediately after spraying it smells strong and sends out som old lady vibes. You have to wait for the dry-down to fully appreciate it. works equally well in the office, the date and the party. I save it and use it in professional contexts when I want an extra boost for self-confidence.

Laurus

I have been trying Chanel perfumes again. I never liked any of the ones marketed for younger crowd. I remember both Chance and Coco Mademoiselle being released when I was still young and gorgeous. But both of them smelled very masculine on me. And to this day they smell like aftershave, so that did not change even after having 2 kids.
With Coco Noir I kind of get similarity to Coco Mademoiselle just in the headnotes but luckily this takes much warmer and more sensual and womanly turn. I feel even a bit sexy wearing this. It is not as sharp as CM and Coco Noir does not give me a headache. However I do not know if this is like or love yet. I need to wear this to work to see if I can smell it in that environment.
Update: I wore this to work. I was able to smell this a little and I really like it. But I do prefer Coco. I still have my sample of Coco Noir so I will keep on using it and finish it and see how I like it.

Elfin Will

Testing this perfume saved me so much money lol. It doesn't smell bad but it smells like a bit of everything. A classy bit of everything. With a Chanel identity of course. I really didn't get the hype for this perfume, and quite every eldery woman I know wears it (or wears something similar) on special occasions. It's a beautiful scent don't get me wrong; I will revisit it when I'm older for sure.

HOWEVER, what is pathetic is the longevity and the projection! I tested another fragrance on the other arm, and I was barely able to smell Coco Noir on me after that. But maybe it's meant to be a skin scent, who knows?

6/10

Ayu natha

Its mature, sexy fragrance. I love it wearing this all day.

HeatherNS

This is one of my boyfriends favorite scents on me. He says its versatile in a way that it smells like a little bit of everything, and I couldn't agree more. Its fresh, spicy, warm, clean, and earthy all at the same time. This can be dressed up or worn casually, in any season in my opinion. I disagree with the reviews mentioning bad lasting power, I can smell this on clothes days after I spray it.

Bonis001

I love this perfume however it doesn't last at all maybe an 1hr or so Not sure if some ingridients were taken off , But it's sad that perfumes are smelling cheap and not lasting now a days. I use to wear this perfume during the night and it would last for days on my clothes and on my skin until i showered. Its Smell delicious just dissapointed for not lasting anymore.

arefuthescroob

Very fruity, definitely not noir by any chance, and it doesn't have a good staying power.

Atomikbomb_

I'm in the small minority who rate this as "ok". I have absolutely no beef with this frag, and it's absolutely a solid offering from Chanel, but nothing about it impresses me on a significant level. Well...beside the bottle 😍

I think this is duskier and smoother than Coco Mademoiselle, but I also think it's very much related. CM is a "like" for me, not a love, but I understand why many folks would prefer to wear Noir. Sheldrake and Polge are both fantastic perfumers, and I think this is a very *smart* and calculated release.

The opening is almost identical to me to Mademoiselle's, a brisk citrus with aldehydes (yes, I know none are listed on here, but many, if not most Chanel perfumes smell as if they contain them regardless). It's crisp and bracing, but somehow ridiculously elegant. I do agree that Chanel stuff has specific sort of upscale magic, and it's indescribable.

It mellows into a rosey floral heart, and smells nearly like very expensive cosmetics or lotions. It's so pretty, and it's purposefully so. Everything is neat, and in it's place, with just the right amount. This feels a little more organized than Mademoiselle, actually, but both are very *deliberate* (it's a weird way to describe things, but I struggle to find the verbiage for this vibe).

Where this differs much more from CocoMad, is in the drydown. The smoothness is much more of a factor here, and although it's a little heavier, the vanillic tones of everything keep Noir very soft, and more approachable. I find this much more "easy" to pull off, and I think the bottle is a little misleading. It smells like soft velvety blush color, with brown tones. It's not really black in mood to me. The resins are lovely!

I think I just can pass on this easily because Mademoiselle has a lot more attitude, and actually feels more memorable to me. She's a little sharper, and the patchouli is more pronounced (I really do love patch, so take my opinions with a large grain of salt).

I used to feel more drawn to this, but with experience now I realize I like my fragrances with more character, especially if they cost quite a lot.

MiwaB

This is by far the best of all coco fragrances! Its probably the sandalwood in it that takes it to a higher lever, this is classier, more poised . Smells like a boss woman who knows exactly what she wants and what she s doing. I love it.

alexoxoxo

It's pretty! I'm not getting any distinct notes when I wear this - nicely blended. I find the longevity is on the weaker side for me, which I'm disappointed by. Otherwise, it's quite nice. This is an easy reach most days, inoffensive, not particularly unique (though that's not a bad thing). Not my favorite from the Chanel line

BougieSh3

Very comforting scent; I love wearing this to bed. ..

Trishalalalala

I get a lot of spice and citrus with this. Longevity is okay, sillage is okay, smell is mediocre. This is a kind of perfume that all of us has smelt in a lot of places, literally.

‘A Vintage perfume that smells common and nice’ - that’s all comes to my mind.

mwisnes

I feel like this is a very mature sexy sent. I can definitely smell the fruitiness in the opening, the die down is a nice rose but not an ordinary rose… it’s hard to explain but it’s unique. Very classy

Nerva

This perfume is definitely an acquired taste. Coco Noir represents confident and self-aware woman that cares about her personal style. Mysterious and dark.
My mother introduced me to it when I was in my twenties so at that time this perfume was not for me. Now, when I'm in my late thirties, it is perfect. It cannot go unnoticed by men and women. It draws attention whether you want it or not.

RebeccaV

I sprayed one spray on my wrist while at the mall. Went on with my day shopping and could smell something powdery floral and the realised it was me! Coco Noir is very warm and spicy with citrus at first, then dries down to a powdery loveliness. I find it comforting, like a time I knew before. It’s womanly, can be sexy, I think my husband will love it. It can also be casual, but refined. I love it!

Mmeaniee

Because all popular Chanel perfume was own by my sister and mom, so i went for this.
I was blind buy and have high hope for this. But this is not me. It's more like the perfume is wearing me.
It's super patchouli, woody, spicy with hint of sweetness on me. Too strong for me.

PixieDevil

This was overbearingly strong. One spray to my inner elbow & my nose was under assault for the 3 hours it took me to throw in the towel & scrub it off. I don’t know what note is in this that makes my nose burn, but I was gravely disappointed, as it smells nice on paper. It dried down to the same soapy, rose powder that No. 5 & Coco Mademoiselle do on me, but with a strong aftershave vibe. After testing it, I can now say I’ve smelled it on many women, and I can definitely say it smells better on them than it does on me. My body chemistry wages war on the signature Chanel DNA, turning it into something astringently sharp & I can’t help but be reminded of an older lady at church who was too heavy handed with her sprays & her red, feathery lipstick. The bottle is timelessly beautiful, however.

Just an update: I finally found my Chanel & it's Chance Eau Fraiche. Highly recommend for those who don't like rose or too much powder.

Adeenafzal10

It has a sparkly opening, like what you’d imagine opening a can of grapefruit Fanta would smell like. Despite the sparkly, fruity comparisons, it’s not sweet or syrupy, or even too zesty. It has a spicy kick that makes it a classic, elegant fragrance. Personally, I think it would be a great first purchase from Chanel because like the reviews mentioned…it’s a perfect combo of coco and mademoiselle.

I wanted a Chanel perfume just for the sake of having the brand that birthed perfumery in my collection. But I’d always assumed the scents to be very boring, cliche, overdone. But it comes as a shock to even me how much I adore this perfume. I love it for business meetings where you want to look like the main person. It’s an elegant scent that puts you in a bright, elegant mood. Personally, I find the perfume to be long lasting. I do agree that Mademoiselle has a larger longevity, but this one’s quite good too. Can take you through the day!

clairegram

Very weak sillage and no longevity. What is wrong with the latest batches?
The scent is beautiful and sparkling but lasts 20 minutes on the skin. Such a shame.

Nocciola23

I love Chanel perfumes and I'd seen a few influencers rave about this so instead of testing this on a card first, I went and sprayed it on my wrists - being so sure I would love it.
I didn't. My grandma wears the original Coco Chanel and I thought it might be a younger twist on that, but it's very masculine and sandalwood heavy.
I like sandalwood, but this was not nice.
It's very old fashioned as well.

Intrepid-Taste-1111

ooh I get it, I get it now. such a special perfume, the kind you want to dress up for. definitely has that Chanel DNA in the dry down, but it's totally androgynous and so sexy. on the wishlist

Bellini84

Coco is my favourite fragrance so decided to treat myself to Coco Noir with an online purchase.BIG mistake!I was expecting a deeper more intense version of my favourite but instead got a masculine version of Coco Mademoiselle...yuk!It was a relief when I'd used it up. Even my daughter who loves Coco Mademoiselle didn't like this.It smells like aftershave and not in a good way!

Bloomsbury Barton

I so wanted to love Noir but sadly I didn’t.
The initial blast was very unappealing to me, followed by the clove note quickly popping through and there it stayed…far too long for me.
I can not imagine me wearing this and feeling alluring. I do, however, love the aesthetics of the bottle.

dancingdear

This is very herbal and a bit sterile clean to me. It has the Chanel signature patchouli which I find makes the scent quite cold. It is Chanel quality but I was hoping for a more something more approachable.

Satanelle

I bought this after testing in-store, with the intention of making it my next signature, after Womanity's discontinuation, and in case my current signature Parisienne by YSL suffers the same fate. (Because honestly, all they care about are Libre and Black Opium) I love how it smells, once the screechy citrus opening fades and only leaves a hint after the Rose and Patchouli take over and are supported by the Tonka, Sandalwood, and Clove base. Granted, it's nothing like the fragrances I mentioned before. But the sexy, sleek black bottle made me like the scent just enough to compare it to those two. And of course with it being Chanel, I expected a certain quality. But I was badly disappointed with the longevity. When first sprayed on the skin, or on clothes, I'm almost overwhelmed and am looking forward to a long wear-time, but unfortunately, it fades within 30 minutes on me. And I know my bottle is legit, maybe I just got a bad batch. But I expected so much more.

faustute

It smells like soap… I’m very disappointed

Bopha85

This! Soooo soothing... But on paper only. On my skin, all I smell is sharp citrus soap. I really thought I'd found the Chanel for me.

sjt422

This is my power scent. I have yet to purchase a full bottle, but I really want it because the bottle is gorgeous. This is one of the only Chanel scents that I truly enjoy. Also, the citrus in it makes it not so “noir” to me. It can be worn in the daytime. Just know, you’ll feel powerful whenever you wear it.

Guframel

I was gifted this from my mother who thought it smelled like “old women”, but I liked it enough and tried it out. Initially I felt a bit indifferent about it because I love sweet gourmand scents but it has grown on me tremendously. It is oddly enough also the only scent people have complimented me on. On me it mostly smells spicy/woodsy/musky, I can’t get any of the citrus notes or the vanilla notes. It’s my go to work perfume and the only perfume I’m considering re-purchasing as it’s inoffensive and timeless.

Stoopid Phresh

I was st Sephora sniffing fragrances and this was a stand out!!! This smells so rich & premium, fresh yet dark- I'd like to sample this👌🏾

CanadaPrfumLVR

I’m not an olfactory genius but I know what I like and believe I can pick out the obvious notes. This is a spicy perfume. It doesn’t give off that hit of ‘perfume’ that can be off-putting. It smells good from first spray. When compared to Coco Mad it is definitely lighter, less of an entrance, and much spicier. It has a cool scent in the same way that Mad does but it still has warmth. The two have similarities but I wouldn’t call them lighter/ mild/ stronger versions of the same. Quite different and I will be wearing them for different occasions. Definitely more masculine than Mad. I think this is going to become a staple neutral spicy fragrance for day wear for me. Mad is more of a statement perfume, and more unique.

Indulgence

This smells too soapy for me. :( I haven’t yet found a Chanel perfume I love.

Makers75

I was out yesterday Christmas shopping in Richmond, VA and came across the Chanel Boutique along side Doir, PdM, Creed, and TF. I've never seriously considered a Chanel, but since I own numerous PdM and Creed, I thought I'd check out Chanel. The representative sprayed a few sample on paper and handed me Blue Parfum, but I was instantly captivated by Coco Noir. It's sophisticated, dark, modern, but yet classic, ...I thought this banger is fantastic! I am a man and own numerous niche & designer fragrances and this one is amazing. Coco Noir is top shelf quality and performance. IMO this frag is 100% unisex. Guys should not dismiss Coco Noir and take a chance to break from the norm. You will not be disappointed. I am very glad I purchased the 100 ml bottle. I have already received unsolicited compliments! ;-)

basgam

Of course it has Coco Mademoiselle dna, I've compared them both closely. Though Coco Noir is less in your face (...nose, I mean), it is much softer, more mysterious, elegant and way classier. While Coco Mademoiselle shouts to take away the whole room's attention, Coco Noir is that content light of elegance that doesn't need to scream to be seen as others are drawn to it anyway. I was wearing it last night in winter cold weather, and the smell got so insanely beautiful and powerful that people did complement it a lot on me. To me, it's a winner.

HecateZeusIsis

I am absolutely in love with this beauty, it's dark and mysterious, sophisticated and sexy...just perfect. It is my signature scent and I don't think its going to change anytime soon, sometimes I layer it with Kayali Vanilla 28 to make it a little sweeter. My fav Chanel perfume, it encapsulates the essence of the dark feminine archetype, discovering this perfume was a spiritual experience for me. I Love it.

BerryRose

Coco is one of my all time favourite fragrances. Even though it's very 1980s, it doesn't feel dated at all. It's spicy, elegant, and sophisticated, and perfect to wear during the holidays and into winter. Since I love Coco so much, this autumn I decided to add a small bottle of Coco Mademoiselle and Coco Noir to my autumn fragrance wardrobe. The reason for Coco Mademoiselle's bestseller status over the years is because it's elegant, tasteful, and very "millennial". While CM is a continually top selling perfume in both the US and the UK you hear very little about Coco Noir despite it being on the market for ten years now.

Is it possible to love the original Coco and also love Coco Noir? Of course, I'm sure there are some who do. But Coco Noir is a special occasion perfume for women who love Coco Mademoiselle but do NOT love perfume. I don't mean this as a criticism. We don't all need to be collectors who buy more perfume than we can possibly wear and spend our free time reading and writing online reviews. Coco Noir is for women who love wearing Coco Mademoiselle but don't know that it's a flanker (or, for that matter, what a flanker even is). Both Coco Noir and Coco Mademoiselle are woody amber fragrances, whereas the original Coco is a soft amber. By contemporary standards, Coco Noir is a very warm, spicy fragrance. However, Coco Noir is much more fruity and much less floral and spicy than the original Coco.

If you love Coco and want a truly spicy, elegant, sophisticated perfume, then stick with with Coco. However, I do love the Coco Noir's glossy, sexy, opaque black bottle. It looks great on a vanity and I'm not sorry I bought it, it's just not a fragrance I'd repurchase. I think CN would also probably be a more interesting fragrance on a man than a woman.

livio.marucci

That perfume is adorable.
It is a modern and elegant scent...
A flowery gourmand with a very well dose of vanilla...

I loved it.

I envy women because most of male scents are not this good
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

CaitlinBlair

I wanted to love this so, so badly due to its reputation and stunningly elegant presentation. But, dare I say, it is one of the most underwhelming fragrances that my nose has ever experienced, leaning towards off-putting. Maybe it could be my personal chemistry, maybe it is the fact that I don't enjoy Chanel fragrances overall, but either way, all I can smell on my skin is straight grapefruit (so sharp, it almost smells like lemon, or a lemon-scented cleaning product) and an intense, musty musk. That's it. The scent gives me a feeling of a once beautiful summer fragrance that has been sitting in direct sunlight in an attic for 60 years... Fall and Winter, where? With this level of citrus, it could never be a cold-weather fragrance. The musk is so suffocating, that I can only imagine it being worn on a Spring or Summer evening. Worn by the right person, on the perfect occasion, during optimal weather...this MIGHT work as a formal, perhaps classy, fragrance for an evening business event. I can't picture any other setting for this. For me personally, this fragrance is, sadly, a huge NOPE. It breaks my heart to part with such a beautiful bottle.

slb2221

All I get is the white musk note, lots of it until the dry down.

Sheldrake, Polge and nocturnal baroque? And then THIS? Really? I don't want let my self be blinded and intimidated by the Chanel perfumes anymore. They have a great marketing departement and know how to melk Gabrielle Chanel's biographie and emblemes to create one scent after the other. But they should beware of the Michael Kors effect and slow down with their releases. I had high hopes on this one and thank God, I did not let myself being seduced to buy a full bottle. Coco Noir lacks memorability and for me this is unforgivable when it comes to perfume - the death penalty actually. Even if I smelled Coco Noir just a few seconds ago on my wrist I cannot recall it's character. It is just Coco Mademoiselle popping up in my head. But was this the purpose? Sometimes a work of art needs an explication to be understood and appreciated fully (like perhaps Mitsouko), but even without words it's aura is strong enough to leave an imprint. Now this is not the case with Coco Noir, it needs the info, otherwise it is just meh... It starts with a fresh burst of citrus, gives a nod to Coco and then morfs into a dull and lackluster sister of Coco Mademoiselle. No darkness or mystery here. And if I did not know that it was an offspring of the house Chanel I would just perceive it as failed dupe for Mademoiselle. Besides that the lasting power is very mediocre. Now if you are somewhat drawn to Coco Mademoiselle but find her to shrill, sharp and rebellious then maybe this is worth a try. I for myself give it wholeheartedly a pass.

PKSMKE

So disappointing. On my skin there is virtually no sillage, and the longevity is poor. The accord is pleasant but combined with the price I can easily pass on this for my wardrobe.

fumongous

This is good, but I prefer the heavier spiciness of the OG Coco (one of my all time favorites). Love the black bottle!

paulav

Like an older sexier cousin to Coco Mademoiselle. Has some deeper notes to it but otherwise are in the same family. I prefer Coco M.

I feel barely ready to review my favorite and also only Chanel.
So I just leave this reminder for myself, and then I can come back to it later.

I appreciate that Chanel avoids the sugar bombs. But to achieve this, Chanel bases many of their perfumes in patchouli. There is a definite patchouli base in coco noir and I’m just not a fan of that scent.

Enrium

Despite the name, Coco Noir is lighter and airier than the amber spice bomb that is Coco. CN is a woody-floral scent with an amber drydown and some spice. It resembles both Coco and Coco Mademoiselle while remaining non-commital - the citrus-led floral-patchouli of CM is in there, alongside the spicy amber of Coco, but both facets are diluted.

CN opens with fresh citrus and some peppery spice. The florals emerge pretty early on, complemented nicely by sweet peach and a hint of spice. The green, peppery geranium and powdery rose are most evident, but otherwise it's difficult to pick out individual notes. Sandalwood rounds it out - pleasant, but a far cry from the beautiful Mysore in my vintage miniature of Coco.

The drydown is dominated by the amber-vanilla accord, sweet yet light - not quite thin, but not rich either. Punctuated by warm, spicy cloves and some earthy patchouli, it is quite pleasant but underwhelming. It becomes musky as it fades, drying down to a dry amber-patchouli skin scent. Feminine-leaning and transeasonal, it has moderate sillage and longevity.

The DNA of both Coco and Coco Mademoiselle (two vastly different perfumes despite CM technically being a flanker of Coco) are present, but CN can't make up its mind, falling somewhere between the two, and ends up being less good than either. Pleasant but pointless, it ultimately falls flat. 2.5/5.

basma gamal

Love it Really. It is classy with bold yet warm twist.
Excellent formal fragrance; forget coco as it is literally every where and switch to the noir.
It is mainly a warm ambry roses that is less citrusy than the original Coco and some how has the same vibes as miss Dior 2017
long lasting LONGEVITY and strong SILLAGE

A big, spooky, flouncy vampire who smells of tobacco and trod on some orchard fruit on their way into your home.
I want to like it, and to be able to pull it off, but full disclosure I did break an entire tester bottle while working the fragrance counter years ago, and my shoe absorbed so much that I'm now quite traumatized.

dyrdkk

It is definitely a mix of Coco and Mademoiselle. I can see why it is noir. To me it has a film noir character. I find it very spicy. But when it dries down, it will be a warm softer sweeter scent. I love it very much. Elegant, egdy. Its warmth is amazing. A lot of patchuli. I think it last good.

oliviababovic

I absolutely adore this fragrance. I wore Coco (the original) for a long time, but I always thought it was too mature for me, and a bit too strong. This is much softer and so beautiful! It's fresh and kind of fizzy almost upon first application, but then it becomes soft and the vanilla really comes out. It almost reminds me of an expensive cashmere sweater.

nakurp

i like it way way better than the coco mademoiselle! this one translates a little bit fresher and acceptable to my nose than mademoiselle. its so sensual and alluring, but airy at the same time. despite the name, this fragrance is somewhat easy to wear and versatile. its so incredibly sophisticated and classy.

but not gonna lie, mademoiselle lasts longer on skin and clothes. still, this one is my number 1 chanel fragrance! the bottle also looks so elegant and chic; its giving dark feminine energy :D

ConcreteRose

This is my absolute favorite scent. So damn sexy and perfect and I can’t believe it only last about an hour on me! I’m soooo obsessed with this scent and she literally vanishes after an hour!!! Still mind blown smh. I let her go cause wats the point 😭?! CHANEL NEEDS TO MAKE AN INTENSE VERSION THAT WILL ACTUALLY BE INTENSE! This is too gorgeous to be Such a let down 😢

Eveningrose

It’s a nice scent! Sure ! But u have to madly overspray ! I sprayed it couple of times on a shirt and after 2 hours, there is barley any scent on it! On my skin , it was gone after an hour! For the price, there are many more scents out there that is better . The bottle is beautiful and I wish I could keep it but I just cannot justify the price for the poor performance. I got chance edt along with this and it performs way better on skin and on cloths so I will be keeping that one. Bye Coco Noir ✌🏽

Penhaligoons

Wow, what a beauty. Years ago I was lucky enough to be handed down a bottle from a great aunt, but I was too young to really appreciate this and unfortunately blew through it in a few short months.
I've been after the original Coco for months but a while ago I decided to try this for the colder weather and maybe trade it if I didn't like it as much as I remembered.
The bergamot is heavy and in your face, but give it 5 minutes and it settles so beautifully on the skin and projects like a beast, the patchouli and sandalwood coming out just a few hours after during the drydown. I really don't see this as more of a mature scent, however I do agree it is very refined. The type of scent that wears you if you're not confident enough to wear it.

Hypercolor

This fragrance is beautiful and the bottle is gorgeous as well, and the name too - Coco Noir. Love the patchouli ambers. Not much more to say as I just spritzed it at the airport shop.

abbieclark67

Cozy and welcoming! The bergamot and grapefruit in Coco Noir's beginning make it particularly lively and sparkling. I get the impression that the opening has a pink, fuzzy cotton candy vibe to it. That goes by very quickly as the bottom note of olibanum rises to seize the moment with its seductive grip. The grounding geranium and the ascending bottom notes of vanilla and tonka bean are then added, bringing the heart notes of rose, jasmine, and narcissus into play delicately and elegantly. The final dry down notes start to arrive across its center. The sandalwood comes in first, followed closely by patchouli, white musk, and. It lasts a very long time on my skin and has a wonderful silage. Highly recommended!

LunaSelene

I've had this fragrance on my wish list for quite a while. FINALLY! My husband got it for me for my birthday! I can absolutely see why everyone raves about it and has it as a "must have" in a collection. It's soft, but not too sweet, mature but not for older women. It has notes reminiscent of Coco and Mademoiselle. It's like a happy medium. I absolutely love the warm notes in this fragrance. It makes it office appropriate, it's not too strong or too heady. It's just right. I'm not sure about lasting power, I am wearing it today for the first time at work. I feel like I over sprayed but it doesn't project too far so I feel I'm safe. I tested it when I first got it for my birthday party this past Saturday, but it didn't seem to last long. I still love it! It's clean, soft, and just the right amount of sweet. This is an elegant fragrance. I keep getting whiffs of different notes and it's so soothing. Makes me feel happy and at peace. I'm in love.

midnight dot

The very first luxury fragrance that I bought and I do not regret it. I've been on a hunt for a warm and spicy tone perfume for a while and I choose Coco Noir as my very first. I have to admit, I was a bit intimidated by it as I am not used to a rich and expensive fragrance, no less than Chanel. It brings out a very mature and exotic smell. I believe it is a right of passage when a young girl becomes a woman.

duaa abed

the only one from chanel that worth buying ...
first spray didn't like i used to spray it only in the air not even giving it a chance on my skin until i tried it on the skin and wow such a gorgeous transformation i love the amount of Naturals that this perfume have that give this beautiful change on the skin though because of the heavy Naturals it dosent noooot lasttt 😭💔💔 2 hours max

pancakespancakes

Beautiful.
Something called me to this fragrance, having never tried it before. Blind buy. Something about the notes. The black bottle. So seemingly distant to it’s pink sisters.
My grandmother, who I love very much, wears Coco mad as her signature scent. I didn’t want to steal her thunder.
Plus, some things are coming to an end in my own life. The inspiration for this scent feels comforting, in a weird way.
However; this scent is anything but depressing. This scent, when I smell it, reminds me that life goes on. That if I look outside my window, there is a beautiful blue sky outside. The fizzling grapefruit and citrusy notes bring me in in a way I can hardly put into words. It’s a very uplifting scent. I really enjoy the warmth, the almost unisex quality this has (which comes and goes -sometimes I feel this is very sweet, sometimes, very unisex), the ambery notes and the beautiful tonka that don’t feel cloying. The dry down makes me feel comfortable with my mostly monochrome, formal and semi formal wardrobe. It makes me feel serious, but young. Maybe one day I’ll be bold enough to wear No. 5 or Coco. For now - I’m a lawyer to be; mid 20s woman very much enchanted by Coco Noir.

The only thing I wish was better was its intensity. I wish I could smell this more. It seems to be a bit weak at times. I spray a lot - I don’t mind. But I wish it was heavier and that it’d last longer. I wish something such as a coco noir intense existed. Oh well - I’ll just reapply.

I’d wear this any time of the year. I don’t believe in scents for only summer or cold weather.
I’m in love, and I know this will accompany me through the rest of this winter and into the summer.

Dashalu

This is one of the strangest fragrances I’ve encountered. The first few times i smelled it - I couldn’t smell it at all. Even though people around me said it was really strong. I would go nose blind to it. There was only a hint of bitterness and almost urine. This could be due to smelling a bunch of other perfumes first and having my nose get tired. I finally smelled it on a fresh nose and could smell it for the first time after a year of trying. I could see why people like it because it has great notes that are yummy and elegant. Geranium and peach!? Genius! It has a fizzy opening which many Chanel fans like. It’s similar to Coco Mademoiselle but without the cloying sour/sweet top notes and loud screeching. And even gives me some peppery original Chanel Chance vibes…but it is cold! It’s everything I wanted coco Mademoiselle to be but too cold. If it had the warmth of coco Mademoiselle I’d be more likely to wear it. There is something very impersonal about it and for that reason I’m not a fan. The bottle seemed chic at first but after smelling it - it reminded me of a funeral. Cold, bitter, closed off, and sad. Even though it’s a good scent it’s not very uplifting and I like fragrances that put me in a good mood in general and make me feel happy/positive. There was something very melancholy and just closed off about this one despite the yummy and elegant notes.

Oh Coco Noir....where to even begin. One of my top two fragrances of all time, along with Guerlain's Shalimar. It has all of my favorite ingredients, but I can't distinguish any of them because they are blended to perfection. This scent maintains that classic Chanel signature without smelling dated. When I close my eyes and smell Coco Noir, I envision lovely art nouveau buildings, dinners on candle lit balconies in Europe, and expensive dresses. It is timeless. It is divine.

yunoh

This is a Patchouli fragrance, It's definitely not a safe blind buy, but I love it. For sure my favorite Chanel <33

StefaniaG

Love! When I first tested it I knew I’d have to add to my list of potential buys. I was never I big fan of coco as it seemed a bit mature and coco mademoiselle, I liked but still not enough to purchase but this one is so good. It’s fresh but sexy it’s classy and feminine. I’m so glad I found my Chanel scent!

duaa abed

u know reign the tv show i think mary smells like this
mysterious but classy flowery but not too much 🥰

Conniethehbk

ok wait what!? I was NOT expecting to love this! I’ve been dying to have a Chanel bottle of perfume on my vanity but refused to buy a scent I didn’t love just to say I had a Chanel perfume. Coco mademoiselle was too much spice and pomp for me, when I was in my early 20s I loved wearing it to feel “grown” but realized the scent choked me. Chanel no 5 (and two other variations of it) smells amazing on my coworkers but smells like urine on me. Gabrielle essence I own a small bottle of and enjoy but don’t go nuts for. THIS is stunning! THIS is MY Chanel! A beautiful sweet grapefruit start, morphing into a clean, sexy but simultaneously demure floral scent, grounded with the sweet heavenly vanilla, tonka, sandalwood, benzoin and patchouli. I can’t accurately describe this scent bc it’s SO well blended and the brilliance and beauty far exceeds my verbal abilities! Think more upper East side lady who brunches rather than a juvenile cutesy sweet fun fruity scent. The tonka, vanilla, and benzoin stop the patchouli and cloves from crossing into the dreaded (for me) choke inducing spicy earthy potency typically associated with those notes. The patchouli does become more prominent in the very final phases of the scent so if you’re very sensitive to patchouli try a sample and let it fully dry down before making the decision, I’m usually turned off by patchouli but in this it doesn’t bother me at all. It’s giving sexy, clean, high class, sophisticated, seductive, wealthy AF vibes. The biggest bottle I can find is coming home with me! I can’t believe I waited so long to pay attention to this scent! I’m obsessed and don’t think there’s ever been another scent I have wanted so badly. I would wear this year round, head held high, chest out, day or night. Omg this scent makes me so happy.

Bonjourlefleur

I adore this! Definitely not too spicy but not your typical generic perfume, it stands out. In typical chanel style this smells of sophistication. I picture a chic brunette dressed all in black with a slick of red lipstick, red nails and a quiet, understand elegance. She is an introvert but quietly confident. Non confrontational but if you cross her she will put you in your place.
At first I can definitely smell the grapefruit which then softens down to the rose and narcissus and finally the patchouli. I cannot imagine an occasion where this wouldn't be appropriate. My signature scent!

Daniela_Beatriz

I like it very much, however on my skin is sooooooo fleeting! Doesn’t last or project, it’s basically a skin scent and I have to try really hard to remember I put it on. Doesn’t seem to be a general impression, so I believe is the chemistry with my skin. Oh well…

Tanguera

Finally, a Chanel for me! I agree with previous reviews- Coco Noir is a bit like Coco mixed with Coco Mademoiselle. The opening blast is a fresh and beautiful grapefruit/ orange, then you smell rose and jasmine, and it settles into a luscious vanilla/ clean patchouli/ musky skin scent with hints of spice (clove). It’s blended beautifully. When I first opened my bottle, the staying power was awful- I couldn’t smell it after 1 hr. However, a few months later I’ve noticed that the staying power has improved a lot; enough to make me keep buying. This scent oozes class and confidence, but it’s also warm and sensual. It may not be “noir” enough for some, but to me it’s like a little black dress.

felised

I am pleasantly surprised by Coco Noir, but in my opinion it's more similar to Coco Mademoiselle rather than the original Coco. To me it's a slightly spicier and more patchouli heavy Coco Mademoiselle. Not very noir, and a bit generic, but I really like it, it's probably my favorite Chanel offering with Coco as a close second. I don't get along that well with the famous Chanel DNA, and I find that it's the least on the nose with Coco Noir out of everything I have tried. The lasting power is a shame though. I can overspray this as much as I want and it's gone in 2 hours max.

saponista

The OG Coco has been my signature fragrance since 1986. It is MAGICAL on me, seemingly getting even better as we both age. (I have a tiny bit of 1986 parfum left in a dabber but these days usually wear a more recent EDP spray.)

Two of my favorite noses collaborated on this variation and I *desperately* want to love it. I’ve been trying it at the Chanel counter off and on for years, hoping that this time it will be different (spoiler: it never has been). The drydown is classic Coco (even more than in Mademoiselle) but the opening … on me it’s a car crash of OG + Mademoiselle + grapefruit and that’s breaking my heart.

Despite not being a big fan of citrus I quite like Mademoiselle, much more than I expected. It’s a pretty bright summery day scent with Coco DNA but very much its own self. In Noir the bergamot and grapefruit go bitter right away, and I think it must be the geranium that amplifies that bitterness through the first half hour or so. After that the floral heart pushes through and it starts to become pleasant, then lovely, then gorgeous as the OG base notes come in. If I could fast forward through the first 45 minutes I would be delighted. As-is, I’m left nauseated.

If this works with your skin chemistry you have my undying envy.

alleycatseyes

Coco is one of the all time greats and CHANEL keeps reinventing it. This is so very special. I’m completely smitten with the notes. Definitely not an old lady perfume as one reviewer mentioned. I get an explosion of base notes upon the opening I spray with a light hand and walk through it. As far as it smelling like licorice like another reviewer mentioned, that may be what they get but my dry down is a hot cocoa, I am smitten. My grandmothers worked for Parfum houses and I’m a collector. This is one I can’t part with. I am in love with all Coco, even my migraine inducing Mademoiselle. {I suffer migraines}. Stop rubbing your wrists together. Walk through a fragrance. When all else fails it may be your body chemistry jst doesn’t get it. Layer if you love.

jg2758

Chanel's fragrances are known for being abstract, and this is no exception. It doesn't smell like a thing. It smells like a *concept.* It smells like romance.

I picture a woman in a red ruffled gown, long legs crossed, drinking an Old Fashioned, flirting happily with her husband or staring off into the night.

Montale Aoud Sense has the same dark, romantic, wine-red feeling. Neither are fruity scents. They're also noticeably different scents. But what they share is a nighttime romance vibe. Not even twilight: Nighttime. I can almost smell the stars.

DomfromBE

Sometimes Coco noir EDP is just too sweet 4 my taste. Layers very good with brand new sparkling Paris-Paris. Great spring combination.
What do I wear?
A perfume that does not exist. LOL

Lyric82

This has my favorite opening of any perfume I have ever smelled. It’s fizzy. Like it actually smells fizzy! Kind of like ginger ale. Then as it dries down it smells clean, slightly powdery and a lit bit citrusy with light florals and some pretty patchouli. To me, this is hands down a LOVE, and I’m a woman who typically enjoys sweet and creamy perfumes. This is the total opposite of that and I love it. I love the bottle, but I wouldn’t say that this perfume matches the bottle. For me, this is a daytime scent. It’s probably not one I would reach for as a sexy night time date night fragrance. I would happily wear it day or night though. Very beautiful.

lilykings

I’m just gonna be honest it’s a female-unisex version of old spice. I’m sure it’s the cloves doing this but I can’t get past it smelling like my grandfather. He’s an old spice user through and through so while I’ll be spraying it on my pillow for the mems until the tester runs out, if you want this scent for a fraction of the cost just go and grab some old spice and a vanilla body spray and you’ll get the same scent.

LSAUG

I found Noir to be very unisex to the point of not wanting it in my collection. It is also very dry and dusty and not in a good way. I kept smelling pencil shavings. It also gave me a raging headache like all of the other Chanels I tested today. Something in the DNA that just doesn't agree w/ me. I find this to be to woody not enough spices and it isn't very sensual in my opinion. I will stick w/ Youth Dew and YSL Opium.

Edit: I'm surprised this isn't marketed towards men. It is so woody. I like woody fragrances but this one is to woody for a woman, well at least this woman.

Scissorslizardspock

I finally broke down and bought a bottle. There’s just something here that keeps bringing me back. And the dry down is a like a lighter version of Coromandel’s beautiful ending. This bright citrus burst gives me Coco Mademoiselle vibes, which I love since I can’t wear Coco Mad but adore the bright citrus top notes. The heart is rose and geranium, softly spicy with clove. Then the drydown is beautiful soft Tonka, patchouli and sandalwood. I finally understand this one, and I’m so glad I kept revisiting it.

For those who dislike this because it’s not “Noir” enough…. I’d respectfully disagree. Noir doesn’t need to be more intense and/or gothic, it can be soft, sensual, and romantically leaning toward baroque. The perfect balance of opulence and wearability for me.

alexandrakara

Definitely not a crowd pleaser (like most chanels only people into fragrance can appreciate it usually)But I love it, my favorite chanel

realitygreene

I've recently fallen for the Chanel allure - the bottles, the prestige, the classy aesthetic, all of it is getting to me in the best way. It started over a year ago with Chance Eau Tendre EDT, the perfect everyday comforting fragrance. Then, I fell in love with No. 5 L'Eau, a stunning aldehyde that reminds me of freshly fallen snow. The most recent obsession is Coco Mademoiselle, yes I am very behind on this discovery. I also tried Gabrielle a few weeks ago and although I wasn't blown away I thought it was a very nice fragrance.

All that said, Coco Noir is...serviceable. It's pleasant. I like wearing it and I would wear it again. However, it doesn't give me the same warm and fuzzy feelings as the 3 previous Chanel fragrances I fell in love with do. I honestly think it might be the grapefruit and the cloves that I don't jive with. Coco Noir is pretty and elegant and I wouldn't be upset to get a bottle as a gift, but this isn't a love for me. If I want a rose and patchouli based scent (which is what my mind categories Coco Noir as) I prefer Juliette Has a Gun Mad Madame. They are not dupes by any means, they just both feature rose + patchouli pretty dominantly.

Gidzbox

I don't know if I should buy this

It is interesting and I always go for interesting buy it might be a little too mature ?
It smells like coco mademoiselle to me but more mature and shaper with the opening

It is bold
Smells expensive
Like a woman in black at a wedding
One that doesn't smile too much

I know if I get this I won't be wearing it a lot because I have coco mademoiselle
I think the only reason I want this is because everyone else has mademoiselle and I want something different

Polohater

My boyfriend left me for a woman who was wearing coco noir. Absolutely gutted. Sexy fragrance tho not gonna lie😔👊🏻

Patpk

I love it. Spicy rosy licorice. Very heady.

strawbrrymelk

Masculine. Makes you sick.

Tincel

A bit more boring than expected. It has some unexpected similarities with "Bleu".

Azisai-

Coco Noir is a lot like Mademoiselle, but I think that Coco Noir is a little more unique than Mad. Coco...I'll explain

Not to discredit Mademoiselle's beauty, it's strong and is one of the pillars of patchouli fragrances but it's a bit overdone and redundant with the sweet citrus syrup notes. Coco Noir has more...um...je ne sais quoi? The first spray is fresh but also warm spicy, it's striking and all throughout the life it's different. Florals are deeper, patchouli is more defined...I understand why this is interpreted as masculine or unisex. Definitely more woody than Mad. Coco.

Lasts pretty long and it's an interesting blend of fresh woods and warm spice tones, makes me think of No5 original but safer for those who haven't worn it or don't quite want to wear it. Makes me think of a model in a cobalt suit during fashion week, with slicked back hair and cat eyeliner. Just a slight edge to it that makes it what it is.

liebecherie

This is warm, spicy, and woody. I love the citrus in the beginning. I don’t often enjoy spicy notes in perfume, but this was done well so I don’t mind it. It’s a comforting scent, and I like to wear it to bed.

smellgewd1

This starts with a ladyboss/mature women type of scents and after 20 mins, it becomes a fun but mature ladyboss. A nightime fragrance but i also wear this to bed on colder days because it's so comfy and the dry down smells sooo gooooood. I smell more flowers and sandalwood more than the fruits.

eaudemale

Classy and night time lady fragrance. Mix La Pathere or Paloma Picasso with Coco Mademoiselle (EDP) and voila.
It's a woodier, drier and spicier CM edp.

Olivier19

Very classy Chanel fragrance, well blended, to my nose it smells like a beautiful light and sweet woody liquorice. Without a doubt a 10 out of 10, this perfume alone would make me fall for any woman wearing it. Absolute perfection in a bottle.

Midnight Lady

The notes are so well blended I can't tell them apart. It's not heavy or dark as bottle suggests. It's a little on a spicier side but more in way of underlining things gently.
Smells extremely classy.

7/10

cats_eye

Something about this reminds me of the long discontinued Aviance Night Musk which is a very good thing. It's a fruity, spicy, sweet floriental with a musky, woody, incense and powder dry down. I don't smell as much patchouli in this one as the original Coco or Coco Mademoiselle. I smell more frankincense and myrrh and amber.

FlowerBabe

I've been wearing it for the past 2 days. The patchouli, rose and spices are noticeable. Sillage is intimate to moderate, I have to bring my wrist to my nose to smell it. It's a similar base to Coco EDT but not as heavy.

Stoicchild

THE biker chic scent. It's powerful but not overpowering. She knows how to be a lady without giving up her femininity. It smells like leather and diesel. I like it.

Yousra M.

My boss lady scent! This isn’t a shy one, with plenty of character and attitude, the kind of scent I imagine a woman like Miranda Priestly would wear to meetings.
The stunning bottle is an extra bonus.

Dcarlo

Straight from the bottle it’s similar to Coco Mademoiselle but on the skin is another thing.
I get a very refreshing bergamot with some grapefruit, then the heart is pure rose, jasmine, peach and geranium.
The dry down is magnificent, patchouli, lots of it as you know, musk, resins, vanilla and sandalwood. However and to my delight the rose is present at all times. Somehow I feel iris, that wonderful powdery iris like the one on Dior Homme, despite is not part of the notes, I feel lots of it. It may be the mix of everything that gives Coco Noir that iris vibe.
I simply adore it and is one of my most complimented perfumes. Very unisex and chameleonic, it changes from day to day. Some days you get more geranium, citruses and resins with woods, others is only roses and jasmines with tons of patchouli.
What it smells like in short words? A mix between original Coco, some Mademoiselle and Blue. Isn’t it perfect?

melusina1982

As a lot of members have said before me this one should be called Coco Mademoiselle Noir.
It is a patchouli overload, very sombre and heavy on my skin.
I recall that it was peachier when it launched but my memory may be faulty.
All in all,if you are into strong, elegant and round fragrances give it a try.
If you are looking for a superior patchouli check out Coromandel, Horizon by L'Oriza Legrand or Reminiscence Patchouli.

MCW7

This is one of Chanel‘s most beautiful scents. A complete failure because it does not last.. $148.. I bought it.. it is the most disappointing. not because it doesn’t smell good. but because it does not last! a complete skin scent . I love it/hate it. because it is not worth the money. From what I understand the original formulation lasted much longer this is now reformulated not worth the money ..I love my Coco mademoiselle intense and I love Coco mademoiselle both much longer lasting fragrances..

amandawilliamspalmer

I have performance issues with this perfume. I can not smell it on myself and I overspray a lot.I layer the coco noir body cream and the perfume and just no smell in like one hour. I find Bulgari Splendia Patchuli Tenation's powdery patchouli similar with better performance. So sad as I love this.

ssamhita

The first time I smelled this was on paper, just out of curiosity, and as I walked around the mall I found myself sniffing it over and over again. Did I find it similar to Mademoiselle? Yes, but there was also this *something* else. If Mademoiselle is sparkly bubbly champagne, Coco Noir to me felt like port wine - intense and syrupy almost (no it’s not a sweet perfume but you get my drift)

Because I am battling hormones from weaning my baby (lack of oxytocin and what not) my husband offered to get me a Chanel to make me happy. I was torn between Chance Eau Tendre and Noir. I mean, I already have Mademoiselle. Do I need a version of it? My husband insisted on Noir though, so I got that yesterday. Truth be told I was more obsessed by the sample vial of No 5 that I got, which I had hated the last time I smelled it and couldn’t get enough of yesterday (that’s a story for another day)

But today, the moment I sprayed Noir, I knew that it’s got a completely different vibe. It’s luscious on my skin, the opening very fresh and citrusy and then settling into a warm woody scent that blankets me. I am rewarded by wafts of the perfume all the time. It isn’t as piercing as Mademoiselle, is all I can say, and I have loved Mademoiselle for nine years now. I can’t stop smiling, that’s how good it smells. I think I would love this on my husband as well.

signe v

Hot! Natural fragrance for a girl boss.

Tovah

I love it. It's Coco Mademoiselle with all the Coco and just a bit of Mademoiselle. It's sexy, and mysterious, and completely stunning. Gorgeous. I love Chanels, and I love fragrances that pack a punch. Coco Noir is perfection. Wear-time is endless. It lasts for days. Not work friendly, but it's fabulous for nights out...in San Francisco!

SophiaG

Each time I wear this, I am more and more impressed - initially it smells a tad mature with a dusty rose (I would say powdery, but I don't pick up much sweetness). As it dries down it gets creamier and sweeter, but stays mature without being dated. Don't be afraid to wear this as a younger woman (or man), as I think confidence makes the difference in a fragrance like this.
I have to be in the mood for this, but it strikes me randomly, and I can't say that it's better suited to a particular season or scenario, as I have worn it year round, from formal occasions to lounging around in PJs. Stunning every time, I think that everyone should test this out.

While all the basic Becky’s fawn over CoCo Madmoiselle… the real beautiful black swans of the party wear this. Cruel? Harsh? Brash? Coarse? Maybe, but so is this fragrance. It’s got grit.
No5 for beginners. Love it.

I tested this in the store and a woman walking by asked me what I had just sprayed because it smelled amazing. It's more unisex, and I think it would smell good on a man or woman. It's not an ugly fragrance at all and the projection is quite a lovely rose. I'll test it a few more times before I commit to a full bottle.

For me, this smells too mature, spicy and even masculine. On my skin patchouli smells too much. I would anyway see someone using this as a signature scent as the perfume is versatile.

Just tried it at the boutique and it is way more old smelling than Coco mademoiselle and Coco mademoiselle intense. This one smells more synthetic too. I think if you were in the early 20s like me you’re gonna appreciate Coco mademoiselle more. It’s an every day every occasion fragrance but because of the price point I think it is the most perfect fragrance to mix and match. If you’re into Middle Eastern fragrances then the deeper notes of the Coco mademoiselle intense is going to be a good mixer to create an original signature scent with a arab scent layered underneath it to give it depth. It also lasts much longer.

On my skin, this opens as a masculine soapy floral and dries down into a vanilla tonka bean. The bottle sparked my interest, but the fragrance did not.

This reminds me of a lighter and friendlier version of Chanel No5. Spices are only present upon application. It has that same delicate powderiness of No5 in the drydown. If you like Chanel fragrances, you will like this. If you don’t, you won’t - no matter how hard you try. Coco Noir has very little resemblance to Coco (and maybe that’s why I like it). Noir is not nearly as mature leaning as original Coco, and it contains none of the soapiness that Coco Mad has.

This is a beautiful fragrance (and the bottle is stunning!) with clear Chanel DNA and in my opinion is a very safe blind buy if you are a Chanel Woman (or if you are buying for a Chanel Woman). It is one of the smoothest and easiest to wear out of the line and I would highly recommend adding it to your collection.

On a personal level, I wanted this to work for me, but sadly, I have come to terms that I am just not a Chanel Woman, and instead will just have to admire this fragrance on others.

Edit: I ended up purchasing a bottle. In my collection of dark, heavy and gourmand-unisex leaning fragrances, it is necessary for me to have one that is classy and all woman. This lasts days on my clothing and projects a foot around me. And the more I smell it, the more I love it. This is the epitome of femininity. And currently, it has garnered the most compliments from any of the ones in my collection! I’m shocked…

had many sniffs today
to make sure my nose was not playing tricks on me
the top notes in unison smelled like a familiar floor detergent mixed with antiseptic
very shocking and disappointing
the dry down was better..all nice vanilla amber and musk
..but i won't touch this again..

Very spicy and peppery. I won't wear it as i find it masculine or too mature.

What more is there to say? This is elegant, aloof, something I imagine Angelina Jolie actually wearing (Mon Guerlain excluded), regal in a Queen Victoria mourning way.

I recall the story of this being that either after Coco Chanel's boyfriend either died away at war or they broke up or he died of natural causes? Anyways...she was so depressed that she poured all of her emotions into one bottle. Thus creating this magical elixir.

This to me is so timeless, it effortlessly overachieves and is resides in a class of its own and nothing can take its place dare I say this to me considering the scent alone would be niche.

Honestly, even though marketed towards women I'd consider this absolutely unisex. I don't think it's enough to cut through the cold of the winter, however this is perfect for that strange transition from summer to autumn.

Dated a guy who I was/am in love with and he pretty much terrorized me emotionally on a daily basis for a few years, I know he loved me but I was never really sure he liked me, he gifted me this perfume on my 29th birthday after a particularly rough summer. I had mentioned once in a store that I loved Chanel Coco Noir but had never spent the money on it. Cut to the night of my birthday while laying in bed watching a movie he gives me this little gift and I unwrap it and find my beloved Coco Noir. I was on the verge of tears that he had paid attention to me enough to buy it for me. This perfume smells to me like a tender moment with someone who you adore but is typically very hard on you. It’s warm and inviting but not in a cuddly way, in a way that says you can come in, but you cannot stay the night. My experience with my ex boyfriend kind of tainted this perfume for me but didn’t take away my love for it, I look at it now the way I looked at him…as beautiful, and enticing, but unattainable and kind of cold but still warm, like a campfire inside an igloo. When I wear this it lasts decades. I get so many compliments as well. I don’t smell citrus in this like everyone else, but I do get hints of beautiful rose, clove and benzoin. My feelings for Coco Noir are much the same as my feelings for that boyfriend, I’ll never get over them, and that’s fine with me.

COCO NOIR

I first smelled Coco Noir years ago in a department store and I never, ever forgot it. Though I never bought any for myself in all the intervening years. That black, baroque, smoky scent would pop in my thought several times a year and I always told myself I would get some, but I just never got around to it.

I’ve bought a small sample of it to try it again to see if: 1. it’s as good as I remember and 2. it hasn’t been reformulated into something else, which seems to happen pretty often.

I don’t mind reformulations, but I do mind spending upwards of $200 for something and not getting what I expected. The new Opium reformulation is my favorite perfume so far, so I’m not anti-reformulation.

So, my sample has come. Let’s see how it holds up after all these years.

The grapefruit hits first, which is not altogether unpleasant, but not what I’m after with this scent. I’m almost giddy during the dry down process. When do I get that musk, those cloves, that coveted, addictive patchouli?

The answer is….never. Not really. This isn’t sending me the way it did all those years ago. The patchouli is barely noticeable. Neither are the cloves. Sad. It’s not an unpleasant scent, but it’s barely noticeable.

The write up for Coco Noir really tempts me, black and Venice and orientalist that begins and ends in Venice. I love that. But it’s not delivered in this perfume.

I will buy a sample of Coco Mademoiselle Intense and maybe that will be the Chanel that I’m looking for. I still love Chanel, the packaging, the history, the elegance of it all. I’m just having trouble finding a Chanel perfume that I really, really love.

Scentedalterego

Rich, elegant, seductive. I’ve had and loved this since its launch. I think this is a great updated interpretation of Coco. Coco is about sweet ambery rose with an ‘80ies overdose of clove.

In Coco Noir a citrus opening was added, the cloves were moved to the background and the rose takes center stage. All on a rich resinous base in addition to the characteristic Chanel patchouli. Coco Noir has more then average sillage and lasts > 12 hours.

The above review is for the original formula (2012-2015). That version is worth Chanel prices, the reformulation isn’t. I have done a side-to-side comparison with the reformulated perfume and the end result is very disappointing. The current formula is mostly citrus-rose on a base that seems the diluted original. Almost like a summer flanker, and it lasts only a few hours.

If you want to get this and care a lot about performance, definitely get a pre 2015 version from a second hand seller. You won’t regret it!

A tip for these bottles, ask for a picture with the bottle held up against very bright light so you can check the fluid level ;)

My mum bought this for my 25 birthday it’s a very classy scent. Very subtle, this is not something I would use on a day to day basis only on specific occasions all in all a beautiful scent

This is a love of mine. I adore Chanel fragrances, Coco Mademoiselle Intense being my favorite because it holds sentimental meaning to me (wedding scent), but Coco Noir is easily the 2nd runner up. Coco Noir is what I reach for when I want to feel poised and professional, when I want to be taken seriously or give off 'bossy vibes'.

Coco Noir is a strong fragrance, and I don't mean strong as in performance/projection (though it does perform wonderfully on me). I mean strong as it, that's the way it makes me feel. There is something about Coco Noir that just gives me an instant boost of confidence. She makes me want to put on my little black dress and my favorite pair of heels. Coco Noir is sexy, but the sophisticated, classy kind of sexy.

This isn't something I would reach for on a daily basis, but more so for special occasions or when I need that confidence boost. The performance isn't as loud as some of the other Chanel's, Coco Mademoiselle for example. It's a little softer, more toned down but people can definitely still smell you. Which is something I really appreciate about this fragrance, it doesn't need to be loud to capture someone's attention.

In the opening I definitely get the citrus notes, especially the grapefruit, and in the dry down it's predominantly rose, tonka, and sandalwood with a hint of musk. This fragrance is blended together beautifully, as I find most Chanel's are. Even though I don't wear this as often as some of my other fragrances, Coco Noir holds a special place in my heart and will forever be in my collection.

Coco Noir is a good one. It's harder to come by in department stores now, at least where I live. It's quite elusive in that way. I often forget about it, probably because rose, spices and patchouli feels very 2010's to me. I enjoy the sophistication of it, but it's not an every day wear for me and my personality. If I held a high position in an office setting I'd consider putting it on regular rotation. It's gives off the vibe of unapproachable aloofness that a lot of Chanels do. It smells complex and familiar. Roses, spice, resins and patchouli is the jist of it. With some other florals and citrus to keep it interesting.

It's misleading when you look at the notes and the black bottle. And the name. You'd think it would be a powerhouse, if not one of Chanel's better lasting. Which is why it's always amazed me how poorly Coco Noir performs. Most Chanels I've tried, even the Chance edts, project and last throughout the day. But Coco Noir, while the opening is promising, deteriorates so quickly on my skin. It manages to start off with a bang, quickly lose momentum, then totally vanish within a few hours or less. I've had older bottles and newer ones, tried in different seasons, over sprayed, etc and none of it seems to matter. I guess it's possible this is the rare fragrance which actually makes me nose blind?

adelaidesandrina

There’s a strong myrrh note here.. i think it’s the benzoins or resins that created this note. LOVE THIS, it’s my favorite chanel now

Uetave

My favorite Coco. It’s such a put together fragrance. Strong candidate for my signature scent. I just like it so much better than coco mademoiselle. And it has the bonus of not being as popular, ‘cause I personay hate smelling my own perfume on everyone else.

RaghdaN

The first time I sprayed this, I didn't get the hype. It smelled like...a Chanel--prominent, refined patchouli, modest projection and some spice. But nothing about it screamed "noir".

The second time I sprayed it, I saw the appeal. This is such a beautiful, noninvasive fragrance. It's not meant to attract attention, but it's noticeable enough to give its wearer a strong boost of confidence. It still doesn't give me "noir" vibes, but it's SLIGHTLY edgy. I'm talking a refined lady who conforms to every standard, but smokes a blunt every few months behind her family's back, and that's about it.

Soft, confident and signature-worthy!

SuzanneS

There is something about it thats challenging or doesnt sit quite right..its like a beautiful sweater but the tag keeps poking you in the neck to irritate you. Polge, for Gods sake lay off the patchouli. Its getting a bit much in the core Chanel line.
