  • Japanese Research Group Performs Largest Ever Meteorological Calculation on Supercomputer Fugaku Tokyo, Global, November 20, 2020 - A Japanese research group consisting of the National Institute for Environmental Studies, RIKEN, Fujitsu Limited, Metro, Inc., and the University of Tokyo has implemented an unprecedented, large-scale coupled calculation of global weather simulation and data assimilation, for a 3.5 km horizontal mesh with 1024 ensembles with the supercomputer “Fugaku”, which is installed at the RIKEN Center for Computational Science in Kobe, Japan. The scale of the calculations performed in this study is approximately 500 times larger than daily ensemble-based data assimilation for weather forecasts performed by meteorological organizations throughout the world. This result demonstrates the high overall performance of Fugaku and showed that the collaborative development of the latest supercomputer, simulation models, and data assimilation systems can realize a much larger scale weather forecasting system. This result also offers the potential to significantly improve the accuracy of future weather forecasts and climate change predictions.

  • Fujitsu, AIST, and RIKEN Achieve Unparalleled Speed on the MLPerf HPC Machine Learning Processing Benchmark Leveraging Leading Japanese Supercomputer Systems Tokyo, Global, November 19, 2020 - Fujitsu, the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), and RIKEN today announced a performance milestone in supercomputing, achieving the highest performance and claiming the ranking positions on the MLPerf HPC benchmark.   • Japan's Fugaku Retains Title as World's Fastest Supercomputer Tokyo, Global, November 17, 2020 - The supercomputer Fugaku, which is being developed jointly by RIKEN and Fujitsu Limited based on Arm® technology, has again taken the top spot on the major high-performance computer rankings, including the Top500 list, in all of the rankings posting much higher scores than the runners-up. The other rankings are HPCG, a ranking of supercomputers running real-world applications, HPL-AI, which ranks supercomputers based on their performance capabilities for tasks typically used in artificial intelligence applications, and Graph 500, which ranks systems based on data-intensive loads. It also posted the highest score by far on the Graph 500 ranking. The awards were announced on November 16 (Japan time) at the SC20 High-Performance Computing Conference, currently being held as an online event.
