Bengaluru: A man has been arrested in Mangaluru city of Karnataka for allegedly attempting to throw acid at his widowed sister-in-law. Preliminary inputs suggest that the 55-year-old man threw acid at the woman but it ended up falling on her minor daughter. The girl was rushed to a local health centre where she is currently being treated for wounds incurred during the incident.

Prima facie it seems that the accused harboured a grudge against the girl's mother, his own sister-in-law, owing to a property dispute between members of the family. Following the incident, he was taken into custody by Mangaluru city police and is likely to be booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). More details are awaited as this is a developing story.

This gory incident brings back memories of a much similar incident reported from Karnataka earlier this month. Eight people were booked in Bengaluru city for allegedly throwing acid on a 38-year-old woman following a bitter property dispute between them and her husband. The crime took place on January 7 in Seegahalli's Mallappa Layout, near KR Puram area. Officers familiar with the case said that the accused were trying to intimidate the couple into selling their land.

Similarly, a 34-year-old woman was attacked with acid in Kolkata in March of last year. A police investigation into the matter revealed that it was a property dispute with her sister that resulted in the woman being attacked while on her way home one evening. The sister in question was arrested on suspicion along with her 19-year-old son for his involvement in the crime. Other cases where acid has been used as a means to intimidate or threaten people, especially women, continue to surface from different parts of the country each day. Legal experts have pointed out that a nationwide ban on the sale of acid should be imposed as a step to curb such instances.
